Did the Germans ever operate from here in WW1?

nvubu

Got to post the photos that don't give much help at first so that it can't be solved too quickly - I'll post an aerial in a couple of hours.

The aerodrome was built in 1918, and I don't think that the Germans got this far west during WW1.

Thanks Nvubu,
I am not to far into the WW1 airfields but the aerials were quite distinctive.
You were right to put the other photos first.
What is the first photo supposed to camouflage?

Now this one
Sadly only a Google overhead to show but got the remainder completely within the name of the game:

Yes distinctive and still recognisable today. The photo doesn't have a title, just a number as it's description, but I think that they are the gun butts for testing the machine guns.

I'd hazard a guess that your challenge is a fly in community in the USA?

It isn't Mayan nor in C America. Unfortunately, due to local history, it doesn't really attract many people who don't have to go there

Yes - Huánuco - pretty spot but suffered a lot from the Shining Path and various drug wars

The composer Daniel Alomía Robles (3 January 1871 – 17 July 1942) was born there - best known for writing El Condor Pasa, one of the most rerecorded Latin American songs of all time which was covered with additional lyrics in English by Simon & Garfunkel. Paul Simon famously wrote "Homeward Bound " in the middle of the night on either Wigan or Warrington stations in the UK (a terrifyign thought)

Malpensa has been a cradle of Italian aviation for over a century, starting with the Caproni brothers in 1910, used by the Italian Air Force use through both wars until becoming a civil airport in 1948, followed by extensive redevelopment to its current form in the late 90s.

Even if you don't read Italian, there are some interesting photos of locally produced aircraft and the early days of the airport here:

https://www.mxpairport.it/breve-storia-di-malpensa/

The BZ308 shown in the challenge was the first aircraft to visit the newly opened civilian airport in 1948 from the Breda factory at nearby Sesto San Giovanni. A fine looking aircraft with a Brabazon-shaped nose and four Centaurus engines with five bladed props. The prototype reportedly showed great promise during testing but there are tales of political pressure from Allied competitors and it never entered production, though the prototype flew with the air force until damaged beyond repair in a landing collision with a cement truck in Mogadishu in 1954. The aircraft featured in the 1953 movie "Italian Holiday", scenes from which appear in the clip below.

More on the BZ308 here if you have a few minutes:

Are you absolutely certain that it’s not Lasham? There are pictures of a Redcoat CL-44 elsewhere on the internet that claim to be at Lasham in summer 1980 and visible in the background of your photo are a Dan-Air Ambassador and what looks to be an Avro York, both of which were at Lasham until they moved to Duxford in 1986. The 727 is also in an early 80’s colour scheme.

Chevvron has it. The airfield is Broom Hall, Pwllheli. Billy Butlin bought the Broom Hall Estate after the war and reopened the airfield in 1947. I would think it was quite seasonal mostly with pleasure flying. Butlin used Fairchild Argus, Austers and Rapides. Early pleasure flying operators were Cambrian Airways and Dragon Airways - the latter became Starways of Liverpool who wrote off their Petrel P6 G-AFIX at Pwllheli without loss of life in 1949. A later pleasure flying operator was Chrisair with their Dragon.

Closest airport to Little Bighorn Battlefield?

certainly with a scheduled service tho I was heading to Bozeman and and Yellowstone - at one time NW A/L had a stopper service from Minneapolis that toured a load of small airports between there and Seattle...

Whilst we await the decision of I42 I'd observe that the approach from the SE to 28R at Billings in a commercial aircraft is a bit of a shock - you're sailing along several hundred feet above the countryside and then cross the cliff and are suddenly 30ft above GL - most disconcerting

Asturias is correct - Billings Logan International Airport (KBIL) in Montana. An unforgettable airport once you've seen it. The cliffs are known in Billings as The Rims, which overlook the city in the north and east. They are formed by the Cretaceous Eagle Sandstone.

There is an ongoing issue with rock falls, causing damage to houses that have foolishly been built close to the foot of the cliffs. I hope none of those houses were bought by civil engineers or geologists!

Well Bear that wasn't easy - a lot of Swedish airports have very similar towers and the sun angle made any ID on the other buildings bloody hard - I thought I had it 4 times before trying Torsby!!

The challenge looks like our office! However that's a lot of lighting for a track like that- even in it's glory days. And relatively modern at that - note the light sensors on top of each lamp - so probably post 1980...... And the lights were put in before it fell upon hard times

I'm a bit out of touch with which VGS are still operating; the three to which I used to supply cadets from Herts and Bucks Wing ATC (612 Abingdon, 613 Halton and 616 Henlow) have all been disbanded so there is a massive 'void' stretching from Oxfordshire through Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire to Bedfordshire.
