Bingo! RAF Acklington, taken in August 1963. Home of 6FTS and a flight of 228 Sqn - which the following year was renumbered as 202 Sqn.

The airfield closed in the late 60s, much of the site was the mined opencast for coal, and the old technical site is now the location of two prisons. How things change.

This aerodrome is no more. It closed in 1960 when operations moved to a new one further west and closer to the sea, and the land was turned over to developers, who kept the original runway layout as the main avenues.

thanks - I think there are detailed instruction in the computing tag - I think they've changed some things now but the picture has to be posted SOMEWHERE so you can add a URL link
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
User Cp on top yellow menu line above - Pictures and Albums - create Album - Upload picture - gives you chance to upload 3 jpegs at a time - once uploaded you can copy either the BB or the other link

Go to thread you want to post on - Reply - picture symbol and paste in the link

Only problem is that it seems to only allow 25 to 30 pictures per Album so you have to delete the oldies every so often

10th Feb 2018, 09:20

Hmm Script on building looks Western but palm type trees so warm

Ghastly 1970's building - might be anywhere buy looks like something a "strict" regime would build. Must be a BIG city - that redevelopment area is massive - and it all looks planned - someone spent a lot of money. It's far bigger than say the old Jakarta Kemayoran or Austin Tx redevelopment

I though t S America but I don't think Sao Paulo or Rio are that planned and Buenos Aires doesn't have that amount of green spaces............

Philippines - possible but not enough cash............

dook
10th Feb 2018, 15:50
Possibly Middle East.

I also thought of NW China.

broadreach
10th Feb 2018, 17:05
HH, palm trees and bananas. And you're right, the redevelopment seems to have been very well planned, although I'm not sure whether it happened under one of the periods when a strict regime was in charge.

And no, neither Middle East nor China. Nor Philippines. So yes, South America does ring the right bells but neither Rio nor Sao Paulo.

Edit: I lived there as a child and a schoolmate's dad would take me up in a Stearman every once in a while. Once we flew the length of the new airport runway, then under construction, and it seemed to take twenty minutes!

broadreach
10th Feb 2018, 17:17
Obviously the overflight of the new runway took much less. I've just checked its present length against the PT-17's cruising speed and think it would have been around 4 1/2 minutes.

broadreach
10th Feb 2018, 18:37
Jenks, say again?? Took a few seconds for "Paddington" to sink in but yes, Peru and Lima. The old Limatambo terminal that preceded Aeropuerto Internaconal Jorge Chavez. For HH's benefit, designed and built during the decidedly western-friendly presidencies of Prado and Belaunde.

Well above the glidepath anyway. If the PAPIs weren't there I would have said Lasham.

Heathrow Harry
11th Feb 2018, 10:45
Doubt it's Lulsgate - in picture terminal is on left so that has to be 09 and the long excavation or old runway running across the active isn't there - plus Lulsgate has the full set of runway markings whereas this just has end runway bars. The woods at Cleve don't have those logging/access tracks you can see either

and of course the sky is blue and CAVU..................

Flap40
11th Feb 2018, 12:06
If it is a single digit runway then given the direction of the shadows we must be in the southern hemisphere.

Stopped off there to refuel on the way back from Oshkosh in 2015. The most valuable feature of the ForeFlight app is not the magenta line, but fuel prices at each airport.

The people at small US airports are consistently friendly and helpful in my experience. The fuel truck driver asked if we were planning to go into town for lunch.

"We would like to. Is there a courtesy car?"

"Yes, but it's not very reliable. Take my truck."

Who are you calling hooligans ?

It is 8 Sqn not 6

This was 1970 during the Radfan escapades - Sharjah as has been mentioned.

kenparry
20th Feb 2018, 12:57
Oldpax has it: RAF Sharjah in 1970. Hunters of 8 Sqn, RAF. We were based at Muharraq, Bahrain, but had no weapon training facility there, so we (and our neighbours 208 Sqn) would visit Sharjah regularly to use the range on the coast a few miles SW of Dubai.

After the withdrawal from Aden in 1967, Sharjah was expanded and had a few years of being quite busy. In 1969-70 it was home to 78 Sqn (Wessex), 84 Sqn (Andovers), a detachment of Shackletons from the UK, and an AAC Sqn with Beavers. All gone by the end of 1971.

In the late 90s I went back a few times. There was by then a new airport about 6 miles inland. The old field had been built over. The runway had become a dual carriageway with lighting on a central strip - but not resurfaced, so the old taxiway turnoff lighting was still present!

This one is the lead pair of a 4-ship; the second pair (shown in my first photo) is visible still on the runway.

The Sharjah runway was narrower than standard at 100 ft rather than 150, which made for interesting times on 4-ship departures. It was not unusual for the second pair to find the wake of the leaders.

This 4 was going on a CENTO exercise over Iran; the Shah was still on the throne.

Queens Flight at Wellesbourne Mountford? Perhaps in the earliest 748 days, co-inciding with closure of RAF W-M, perhaps disbandment of Airfield Construction Branch, and the move to Waterbeach. Another option is visit to now-defunct Royal Show at Stoneleigh. My only visit to W-M with a Royal Air Force aircraft was in a high wing turbo-charged piston single.

HH has it - Vultee Field, Downey California

I stumbled on this when looking at a map of old airfields in the LA Basin. The first type produced here was the Vultee V-1:

https://i.imgur.com/SZfmze5.jpg

and the last was the Space Shuttle:

https://i.imgur.com/fjK2UUg.jpg

In between, besides the Hound Dog Mach 2 cruise missile, Downey produced lots of BT-13s, lots of Vengeances and the Apollo CSM.

In October 1941, there was a backlog of BT-13s, due to late delivery of fuel pumps. The was a mass-departure of 123 BT-13s in 32 minutes, taking off in threes, at 15 second intervals!

https://i.imgur.com/RVGXsZv.png

Here's the Vengeance production line. This one is especially for Danny:

https://i.imgur.com/Lr1W6TZ.jpg

Downey has almost completely disappeared. The only remnant is part of the Vultee offices, including the Art Deco entrance:

The runways were never very long and when the Shuttle was built, they were gone.

I wondered how the Shuttles were delivered. It turns out they were taken by road to Edwards AFB. That’s 110 miles away!

CORRECTION

Further research indicates that although a lot of Shuttle work was carried out at Downey, including building a mock-up, final assembly of components, made by many subcontractors, was at the Palmdale plant. This is only 36 miles from Edwards.

I'll bite.

The aeroplane is an ERJ135 in the colours (I think) of bmi regional - so Europe is where I'll start.

The blue and white police van looks Dutch to me but I can't make the rest of the picture fit with the Dutch airports.

At first I thought we were in Denmark because the baggage truck is reminiscent of those in Billund.
