View Full Version : Which Aerodrome Mk III

Your challenge I would describe as GA and the R/W doesn't seen to be in great condition.
Northern USA ?
Naaah.
We are not in Northern USA.
Auxtank is nipping up his local for a "Tiger Frightener" and then going to his scratcher.
I leave one clue behind; I haven't been on "Which Aerodrome" for a bit, so this one was a Settler...
Cheers!

Looks very like the Carolinas or Maryland near what looks like a big river estuary without much tide
Runway heading is interesting further south tends to be 18 - 13 suggests maybe further north or a very constrained site - island?
Auxtank
17th Jul 2019, 10:01
Both certainly close.
Asturias' navigational whims closer still.
Is your image orientated to north ?
Asturias56
17th Jul 2019, 10:14
Can't be - runway marking 13 is at 01:00 on the clock - if it was N oriented it would be at 10:00 or 11:00
I reckon the buildings in the top RH of the image is closer to N

Well done Asturias.
I was about to drop a hint that I was nipping out to the corner shop for some hand-rolling tobacco.
Nice little airport if you ever want to visit Jamestown and its historic associations.

TINYPIC.COM
dook has messaged me regarding the fact that tinypic.com is closing down. When it does, any image linked to there will no longer be visible - go back to the original Aerodrome thread top see how it looks when the image is no longer available.
If you use this website to host images you will need to download all your images from that site down to your computer. If you want the images that you have used to be visible on this (or other sites), you will need to upload them to another site. I use Microsoft OneDrive as this is under my control and all the images are on my PC as well as in the cloud. One downside is that I have to use the Source button to manually insert the images into a post.
Once the images are back up in the cloud, you will then have to go through your posts and replace the tinypic images with the ones from your new location. This is long winded and a pain - I know I've had to do this once before for my images.
dook - you did say you are retired and with time on your hands :ok:
I am going to try to retrieve all mine.
I have now established how to upload directly to PPRuNe via a test post yesterday and it works.
The problem is going to be getting into tinypic to retrieve my portfolio.

Sorry - AUXTANK is correct - in Russia but not Urals..............
A complete red herring but from my trips to Russia and the FSU an awful lot of it suffers from an awful lot of fog - especially in winter................
PS re TINY PIC - wasn't there a problem on here a while ago when some other picture posting site changed their tT&C? I've come across references n old post .. and of course Google Earth wiped a whole load of pictures a while back as well
That's why our outfit doesn't trust Cloud based storage for anything other than very short term items :suspect:

Not that I can find - the locals have hunted, cut wood and fished for several hundred years without any seeming notice from the outside world at all
It appears to be listed (with another 100,000 small places ) in that great summer holiday read (recommended by Ophra) "All Union Population Census of 1989: Present Population of Union and Autonomous Republics, Autonomous Oblasts and Okrugs, Krais, Oblasts, Districts, Urban Settlements, and Villages Serving as District Administrative Centers"
It has a regular (but sparse) travel connection by air to the nearest significant town
Asturias56
18th Jul 2019, 09:06
It appears in TripAdvisor!! There is a hotel , a guest house and some cottages if you are looking to stay over, a local museum and some traditional buildings to see ... several thousands souls live there and appear to be quite content
The Hotel is a bit rough according to the (very few) reviews......... sounds like a few I've stayed in in the sticks

" (http://gaffney-cline-focus.com/the-competent-persons-report)Upset" - if you mean I'm at Bologna Airport with my horsewhip packed so I can ambush you on the steps of your mansion in Mayfair and give you a good thrashing - no ;)
"Upset" - as in you think you've backed a winning horse and it doesn't even get out of the gate and all you can do is dance on the torn shards of your betting slip - YES I'm upset
I know I should learn but just when I think I've got one that will run and run - BANG - down in flames (again) . It astonishes me at the geographical and historical knowledge on here - and people have minds like cork screws - look at the last half dozen challenges - UK, Vietnam, Maryland.... and 2 of those places no longer exist - and lasted a max of 24 hours....................
So, as V I Lenin asked - What IS To Be Done?" - work harder Asturias, give up your childish ways and put some back into .it..........
The challenge is a rather neat spot - those woods are carefully arranged an d trimmed - not sure that's a very "English" landscape. And the Airfield - very neat, very small ramp but two very smart turn round areas at each end of the runway
Switzerland perhaps..... (I can't see any litter either...) but very N-S which is often characteristic of the USA
Aircraft ID is sometimes very useful as well.
I'm afraid it's a no to Switzerland and the USA.

just to be sure - this is Metropolitan France not France overseas... eg Corsica etc etc?
N-S runway isn't very common in France proper - so I'd guess somewhere away from the Atlantic/Channel costs
Doesn't seem to have extensive facilities so not a major destination for scheduled services. No major road up to the airfield so probably away from a major town. No visible car parking, no aircraft parked up. Those turning circles look big to me - bigger than you'd need for a King Air or similar - looks like it might handle the odd ATR or business jets
But still looks a bit smart to me... is it used by one large business or Govt organisation for example?
It is indeed mainland France.
It was exclusively military. Disused since 1998.
It is away from the Atlantic coast and the Channel.

That makes sense Asters - cheers. See it ceased ops in 2005 but no doubt el Radar continues its quite purpose.

Think (as per Dook) it was actually closed in 1998 for air ops - it took the Army several years to get the radar up and running

RAF Ramsbury.
On the R. Kennet
Approx 2 miles East of Axford.
On the Blue Line.

Always a bit depressing to see an interesting historic site given over to agriculture - but it could be worse I suppose. Could be covered in housing.
