India Four Two

Thanks nvubu,

With that kind of terrain, I figured it had to be in the Vietnamese Highlands and given the size of the base, somewhere near the DMZ. So I started at Kon Tum and looked around.

I'll need some time to find a new challenge so in the meantime, Open House.

Terry Dactil
25th May 2017, 23:02
The smoke and date clues leads to some interesting history. I expect the photos were taken on the next morning.
Smoke is from two burning aircraft.
The base would see extensive activity throughout the second half of 1967, culminating in the Battle of Dak To in November 1967. On the night of 15 November, North Vietnamese mortar fire hit two C-130 transport aircraft (#62-1865 and #63-7827) destroying them and setting off secondary explosions and fires in the ammunition dump and fuel storage areas

I like the windsock aligned with the runway - it definately was a one way strip!
There is a story on the 'PNG Ples Bilong Tok Tok ' thead about someone who had his single engine fail on takeoff here, so just fell into the valley and glided down to land safely at a lower airstrip :ok:

Tell Jen she has a smart dad. Erbil it is as it was in 2006.

Yes, we were looking at the existing airport which seemed to be able to cater for the current and expected needs for at least a decade when we were taken to the "new" one with a 105 metre wide 5000 metre long runway, terminal with 6 A380 capable gates and new control tower - the existing one was the most modern we saw in Iraq except for Mosul - another story of wasted aid funds.

Told it was Swedish aid money. Guess they had a decent surplus that year.

Fun six weeks and 41 Blackhawk hours, not to mention the IOM Advanced security course in Jordan before we could travel into Iraq. Sitting here in Tarawa is very tame in comparison.

Jensdad has the con.

Hi Mister Gahan. thanks for that, I'll let her know :) Didn't realise the runway was 5000m long there. That's slightly lengthy, but I guess it does get a bit warm there from time to time...

I still don't seem to be able to upload a photo (I'm sure there was a post somewhere on PPRuNe about how to do that. Anyone know where it is?)

Open House.

You can try jsu pulling it in by drag 'n drop but the most relaible way is as follows

Go to USER CP in the yellow bar at the top

Goto PICTURED ALBUMS in the side bar

ADD Album

Upload Pictures - and then find picture and add it

Once its there click on it and it gives you either an html or a bb address - copy (I use the bb version) and then back to this forum

Open new post hit the little yellow square with sun and mountain and insert the bb code

Thanks for that Harry. I've posted pics here before using drag and drop but that doesn't seem to work for me now. I've tried to create an album but that ain't happening either. Not to worry. Hopefully I'll have it fathomed out by the time I next get one right :)

Re the photo of the aircraft:-
Having unstaggered wings, 4 struts each side and lots of talilplane bracing with a rounded leading edge on the vertical stabiliser suggests they are Salmson 2 reconnisance biplanes. Some of the American squadrons operated these biplanes, and the weird fuselage logo (thinking of Rickenbacker's top hat logo) makes me think they could be American.

I did that one last month I think - you need to go further

I think it links to at least 5 destinations in the British Isles

Looking at my atlas (I am sticking to my principle of not using Google Maps for any of these challenges :) ) it seems that Targu Mures is in a relatively flat area with mountains a little distance to the West. I know that Wizzair fly from there to a few points in these islands. Could it be that little rascal?

Wow ! My very first success - although others pointed me in the right direction. I'm away from home at the moment, so have no access to any photos (although I do have a large number available when I get back).
I hope you don't mind, but I'll throw it open to anyone else who wants to have a go.

Thought I recognised it, and the TAP Airbus was a clue :) The terminal was under construction the last time I was there but I think that tower is still the old one.

RAF Leeming?

Background Noise
12th Jul 2017, 07:24
Leeming it is. Interestingly still pretty much unchanged from that viewpoint - although you would see signs of a HAS site in the distance and the Hawks on the line would be considerably older than these aircraft were when this photo was taken.

Hendon it is - from an 'exclusive' feature about the newly announced RAF Museum. The book was to mark the RAF Golden Jubilee.
