Did our visual circuits at Dade-Collier in 1997 with a Carnival A300 out of FLL. One of our Brit. pilots asked where the fire cover was. The reply from the training captain was "about 30 miles away so don't F**k Up"

I sometimes get the same problem which disappears when I log in - I suspect its the method the poster sues to post the image. You can link the image to a picture uploaded to your PPrune profile or to another webisite. I always use the former but maybe some external links only become active on login to PPrune

I often get a similar problem with photos that Heathrow Harry posts. On my house computer I have no problems seeing the photos. On my iPad - nothing ! Not being “computer savvy”, I have no idea why this should be so.

Interesting..

the PPrune Album function allows two methods of posting a picture one is URL-based (below)
https://www.pprune.org/members/326184-heathrow-harry-albums-what-airfield-picture816-2017-12-03-121405.jpg

and the other is BB (Bulletin Board) based (below)

Dixi - they're illustrations from last week (Nouakchott Airport, Mauritania) to test the image posting - Currently it's Open House

Size seems to be very variable on PPrune - maybe related to the original image size and pixel density - occasionally people manage to post VAST pictures by error

Harry,

I was going to ask you how you post yours! If you click on Post Reply and scroll down, you’ll see an option to attach files. The drawback is you only get thumbnails. How do you post your full-size pictures?

Back to the challenge. Yes, one of the relatively flat bits of Canada.

Heathrow Harry
9th Dec 2017, 08:41
The Approved Method

User Cp on top yellow menu line above - Pictures and Albums - create Album - Upload picture - gives you chance to upload 3 jpegs at a time - once uploaded you can copy either the BB or the other link

Open Which aerodrome - Reply - picture symbol and paste in the link

Only problem is that it seems to only allow 25 to 30 pictures per Album so you have to delete the oldies every so often

Heathrow Harry
9th Dec 2017, 08:53
Given that not even the Canadian taxpayer pays for a significant amount of concrete and a tower at every two-bit town it has to be somewhere big -ish

Lubbock Army Airfield / Reese AFB, Lubbock TX ?

Background Noise
16th Dec 2017, 17:45
Yes indeed - Reese it is. It was fairly standard, as a pilot training base, to have at least 2 runways with, in my day, T-37s and T-38s doing opposite direction circuits to the outer runways and in later years an instrument runway in the middle. At Sheppard we had a fourth runway, under the T-38 circuit, with a curved running rabbit, for the civilian terminal.

Yes, it is one of many airfields that are (were) on Guam, but which one?
Construction was started by the Japanese and finished by the Americans.
It had only one runway, but it looks there was no problem finding somewhere to park!

Damn.. i've been there as well......
Yes. Me too. I used to have crew layovers at a nice beach resort in that area, and never realised that there used to be an airfield so close to the civil airport.
I knew about the large military airfields at the North end of the island, with their multiple runways, so mentioning a single runway must have been a clue that nvubu pounced on. :{

The lack of images is wierd. I did exactly as I had done before and linked to images in my dropbox, so it appears to be a browser issue.
Next time I will try uploding to a PPRuNe album and linking there.

The device I'm using is an ASUS Netbook. It came with Win 10 installed but I've never used that as I downloaded Chrome as soon as I got it home. Doesn't stop it 'freezing' for 15 minutes every week or so for Microsoft updates and a caption occasionally appears pleading with me to use Microsoft Edge when I'm opening Chrome.

Six hours in a C54 would be around 1,200/1,300 miles. About right for either Okinawa or Manila. Yontan on Okinawa was the first airfield captured by the Allies. It's no longer in use but the broad avenue in its place has a hill behind it that closely resembles the one in nvubu's photo.

Thanks nvubu and I have to declare Open House. You provided a few super clues, without which I'd never have been able to get near a solution. Six hours from Guam and the usual cargo back and forth could have applied equally to Yokinawa or Manila. I wasn't too sure abut my dates - Okinawa v Philippines - but suspected that extraction of the wounded to Guam would more likely have been from Japan's islands than from SE Asia.

After posting Yontan I went back to Gurgle and had a great disappointment: searched for "C54 Yontan" and came up with a derivative of your image challenge. Which of course knocked all the air out of awaiting your confirmation or not of my earlier guess.

Looking on both Google & Bing Maps - I can see that the "Med" how I thought of it is actually made up of a number of seas - of which the Mediterranean Sea is but one part - the biggest part.

Alboran Sea
Balearic Sea
Sea of Sardinia
Ligurian Sea
Tyrrhenian Sea
Ionian Sea
Adriatic Sea
Aegean Sea
Thracian Sea
Sea of Crete
Mediterranean Sea
So do you mean the "Med" as a whole?
Or just the "Med" part of the "Med"?

jensdad

The large stand number (if that's what's on the notice) and the lack of nose-in parking makes me think it's a low-cost terminal at a large airport. Could it be Marseilles? I seem to remember that they built a terminal for Ryanair and maybe other loco carriers a few years ago and there was a load of controversy when Ryanair pulled out shortly afterwards.

They could well be Swiss; I’d googled Danish GA tail markings and found some with the Danish white cross on a red background, summed that to the flat environment and shot from the hip! Had no luck whatsoever finding the airfield, though. A few observations:
A) the loooong taxiway perpendicular to the runway.
B) Denmark isn’t particularly noted for dense forest and, if I’m not mistaken, most of the forested land is in the north.

It looks like only a better class of pilot is allowed there. :E
All the tyre marks are in the touchdown area and right on centerline.
Probably like the one-way strips in New Guinea - Darwinian selection of the survivors.

Mae Hong Son has my vote as well, from studying Google Earth. Terry Dactil, had the same thought, sphincter tightening precision. Traffic appears to be mostly twin turboprops a la ATR.

If one looks at Google Earth it doesn't take a modicum of Rocket Science to confirm that the image posted by Jay Sata isn't anything other than Mae Hong Son.

Can anyone else please concur and therefore reach the right conclusion? we could otherwise be waiting for weeks on end whilst we wait for the OP to reply.

Chitts and Heathrow Harry, we went through periods like this on WOE ages ago and I think we reached a more-or-less consensus that, in the event of the challenger not confirming what appeared to be a correct answer, things would move on with Open House being declared. Even if there was some doubt, the lack of response from a challenger shouldn't be grounds for holding up the fun.

Wrt Mae Hong Son, SMOKEON nailed it within 23 minutes and we're now three days on....

Jay Sata - The person who correctly names the aerodrome gets to be in control of the thread and has the option of posting their own image or passing control with an Open House. But that person can't post until acknowledged by the challenger - as broadreach says.

In this case you need to cede control to SMOKEON and wait until you correctly name a challenge or there is an open house declared.

I feel JRFD should take the helm, failing that, it's Open House.

This is a two-parter. The dirt strip is roughly east/west and was used predominately by the UN over the past two decades. The tarmac is quite new and about 20nm north. Both airfields share the same name.

Close enough for government work, HH. The Lat/Long you have given is for a long defunct strip with my first picture actually being the UN strip some 3km West of that location. It was used extensively after Morocco annexed this bit of Western Sahara in the early 90s although required(s) mine clearance activity before every flight. The new runway is about 20nm North and doesn't appear on any charts/imagery.

Heathrow Harry
26th Jan 2018, 07:43
Thank you - - I have to say it's rather an odd story - I was thinking Australia but as far as I was aware the UN haven't been active there. The Sahara is a very large place but I suddenly remembered a picture we received about 5 years ago.

We have Spanish friends - he worked for Medicin sans Frontiers after leaving the day job as a surgeon and she did voluntary work for refugees. They made a number of trips to the refugee camps in Algeria and Spanish Sahara and the pictures they sent looked very like your oblique tho no picture of the airstrip. Luckily there aren't many around - looks liek a hell of a spot TBH

Great challenge!!!

HH, what a wealth of clues! You make it so easy. Rolling hills in the distance, an ATR in distinctive livery consisting of a blue line, traffic cones and a crew member crooking a knee. I’m going to guess Mediterranean Spain or Greece. Or Romenia... or...

Can't make it too easy with the first pic - I've had really obscure airports nailed in 38 minutes by the brains on here.... and I have the con because friends of ours had been to the ghastly W Sahara region and sent us a picture 5 years ago........ there are some seriously good people contributing to this thread

And yes Mediterranean ( and a very carefully cropped ATR) and Jensdad is even closer........

A precision strike, Harry.

Lanyu Island, just off the SE coast of Taiwan, home to a large population of indigenous people, who are not very happy about their island being used as a dumping ground for waste from nuclear power stations.

HH,

I thought about that too, but looking at the runway orientation, I suspect they get healthy onshore crosswinds.

As HH graciously said, dook has control.

PS I recently completed the Melbourne to Hong Kong leg of the Round-the-World virtual race on sailonline.org. Quite a few PPRuNers participate - my vessel is Miss Saigon. When transiting the chain of islands in the Luzon Strait, I wondered where the boundary between the Philippines and Taiwan was. That's how I discovered Lanyu/Orchid island.
