It's called a 'patois' not a dialect.
I demand a recount!:*

:) I actually typed the word 'patois' but I thought the French sound of that word would maybe give it away! I've been to Guernsey a few times (beautiful place, you're a lucky person kcockayne) and I have heard it said that the decline in Guernesiaise really intensified when a large number of young islanders were evacuated to the UK during WWII, and then came back speaking English as their first language. Here's another photo from Forest parish churchyard - within earshot of the airport - that you may find interesting. The deaths on the family headstone are marked in French until some point between 1917 and 1945, when English is used. I love this kind of stuff. Photo used with respect to the people whose names are carved there. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.gmforum.com-vbulletin/768x1024/2017_ci_052_768x1024__c6cc08f96674dd7a8cbca7e5f878924139e748 e0.jpg

Harry,
I'm sorry to hear that your "fairly thoughtful" post disappeared. I would have liked to have read your observations, particularly about "the general retain"! :)

For your benefit, here are some geological clues. The prominent peak has rocks of Lower Cambrian age.The ridge in the middle distance has Late Proterozoic rocks which contain Ediacaran fossil assemblages.

Which makes the airfield Valemount?

India Four Two
28th Jul 2018, 14:53
Correct. I spent a week at Valemount, towing at a gliding camp. A spectacular location in the Rocky Mountain Trench.

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.gmforum.com-vbulletin/1170x641/screen_shot_2018_07_28_at_12_08_49_8ebd00e6deea291a55903f707 b9a24abc883c081.png

Mt Robson is the highest and most spectacular peak in the Canadian Rockies - 12,972'. It rises over 10,000' above the valley floor. There is no non-technical way to get to the summit. It is known to climbers as the Great White Fright!

Henstridge Airfield (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henstridge_Airfield) (ICAO (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICAO) code – EGHS). It was built during World War II (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II) as a training base for the Fleet Air Arm (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fleet_Air_Arm), who commissioned it as HMS Dipper (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RNAS_Henstridge_(HMS_Dipper)). Visitors can still see the concrete outline of an aircraft carrier deck embedded into its one surviving runway. The MOD (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ministry_of_Defence_(United_Kingdom)) sold the airfield in 1957 and today it is mainly used as a base for general aviation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_aviation) and is an active training centre for autogyros (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autogyro) (gyrocopters). The airfield is the base for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorset_and_Somerset_Air_Ambulance)

Harry just beat me to it!

Slight thread drift about driving on the left. I used to live in Jakarta, as did Harry, so he will remember this story. In order to establish the prestige of the British Government, the Foreign Office had sent a giant Daimler limousine for the use of the British Ambassador. Not only was its size completely unsuitable for Jakarta's mostly narrow streets, but one of Sir Humphrey's colleagues had obviously decided that since Indonesia had not been a part of the British Empire (at least not since Raffles' time), traffic must drive on the right, and therefore the Daimler was LHD!

In Indonesia the law says LHD but everyone is free to make their own mind up - I can remember 8 lanes of traffic outside the National Stadium one night - they were (from the left) - ahead, towards, towards, ahead, ahead, towards, ahead ahead.... hardly any accidents at all............................
