Yes it is

When searching “cows on airport” it came up at Owerri Nigeria.
Clearly poor journalism by using an earlier photo.
I was hoping that would puzzle some.
Bit when I found out my self that It is actually Sumburg, I new it wouldn’t last.

Thanks SLB,
I just drove over there in April, I thought it looked familiar! Wasn't quite as much livestock on the airfield when I was there though :)

There is a Japanese presence about 4km from the runway but their compound has nothing to do with the airfield.

28km away is a spare deck form the days when the airfield was associated with V Bombers .

A very long way from Italy - and its a lot more complete than you'd think frorn that picture - a joint civil/military base about 5 km from the seaside......

I have extensively search for anything about joint civil/military bases. I have now thought that "military" might be navy instead of air force.

That brings up some other possibilities.

Are we by any chance in the southern hemisphere ?

Asturias56
13th Jun 2019, 09:55
Getting warm..... yes it's a joint base (in fact as a BASE it's largely military - but it is definitely dual use), yes it might be naval/marine, yes it's S hemisphere Work calls - back in 2-3 hours

A few years back I went through there regularly to & from Murmansk - it's a really nice drive (but not in winter).

A lot of well heeled Middle Eastern refugees would fly to Moscow, then to Murmansk where they'd be taken to border by car or minibus with the bikes strapped on the back. they'd be left at the Russian border post- which is several kms inside the actual border and would exit Russia then ride down the road - you cannot cross the border at Kirkenes on foot. The'd zoom through the actual border (two painted poles) on the edge of what looks like a supermarket car park - which is the Norwegian Border Post - & claim asylum. TBF the Norwegians were very good and had them moved on south to the bigger cities very rapidly

The odd thing about Kirknes is how far EAST it is - same longitude as Alexandria - apparently some oil field guys tried to claim Middle East allowances from their US employer when drilling just north of here!

Dook has it................
