Gentlemen,

We do not know why jensdad has not been able to check in.

At 0752 this morning Flap40 gave his suggested answer with an OH call if he was correct.

Does anyone feel that we can honour the OH call since jensdad has stated that I knew the answer.

Perhaps the thread would then move once again after almost nine hours.

Apologies for the late call (I would normally manage to check in during the day but but have been a bit busy) but Flap40 does indeed have it. I took the photo just before embarking on the world's shortest scheduled flight. I think we took about a minute and a half that day!

Good morning, and yes, that is it. I will give in now, two lovely idents without a name to which one must give Dakar. This is the original airport, given name of a prominent leader, while the current long-named International airport is some distance out of town. J, yes we landed at Yoff, les Gaullois were resident with Transall and Atlantique, but no Jaguars visible...It was always courtesy that the ALM rounded up all the unused coffee, tea, milk, sugar, and gave the Customs man a bag full,,one to the agent, and one to the refueller...All the other unused meals(not scraps) were likewise bagged, and placed under the tail.Figures would appear from the ground behind the aircraft,,and the bags would disappear.....Protocol,and wearing many stripes and a big hat would see one on ones way easily.....A few dollars or coffee in flt.ops also had a beneficial effect...
I did find a yu-tube video of the new Air-Senegal A330 First flight to Paris, but couldn`t equate it with the old airport until your quote and further search on GE...

This place was held by 5500 Germans for three months under heavy siege from the Russians.

They could only be supplied by air. The only other support they had was from German artillery ten miles away.

Just under a quarter survived.

Kholm Pocket - but wiki stages that the it was too small for aircraft to land.
Flights originated from Pleskau-Sud/Pskov-Sud?

dook
30th Jun 2019, 09:47
nvubu strikes with Kholm.

Aircraft did land there before the area shrank, as evidenced by the photograph.

During the conflict some 2,000 sorties were flown - initially by JU-52's and then gliders. The change of approach was forced by a 30% loss rate in aircraft. As the 'kessel' area was compressed because of the intensity of the fighting, the airfield became part of 'no mans' land and each glider landing was greeted by frantic efforts from both sides to retrieve the valuable contents.

You have the thread.

I think it might be Hill AFB, Ogden Utah

"Following American entry into World War II (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II) in December 1941, Hill Field quickly became an important maintenance and supply base, with round-the-clock operations geared to supporting the war effort. Battle-worn warplanes like the A-26 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_A-26_Invader), B-17 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-17), B-24 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-24), B-29 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-29), P-40 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P-40), P-47 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P-47), P-61 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P-61), were sent to Hill Field for structural repairs, engine overhauls, and spare parts. The peak wartime employment at Hill Field was reached in 1943 with a total of just over 22,000 military and civilian personnel. "

I would judge the runway to be less than a kilometre so if there is the occasional international flight it is probably close to a border and can only take small aeroplanes.

Canada ?

dook
1st Jul 2019, 10:53
I've searched Canada and it looks like Miquelon.

It seems it doesn't facilitate international flights.

Asturias56
1st Jul 2019, 11:01
Its not Canada but it is Miquelon - which is of course an integral part of La Belle France - same as Bordeaux, Corsica or New Caledonia - it was left over from a war way back and no-one has ever bothered to sort it out. Hence all flights from there to Canada are International flights.............

Thought I might get a bit further with that dodge........................ Over to you

Well, that's a very old C130 with three-bladed propellers - probably late 1950s. The refuelling truck looks ancient as well.

I'm wondering where the Americans might have been in the Far East around then.

Maybe PNG.

i'd love to know how you got to Chiayi!! Unless of course it infringes on the UK Offical Secrets Act or some Guild Secret.... we all have our own ways of tackling the problem but I'd love to know how you did it..... so that next time............

I'd de- indented the pictures, run them through Google Image (i know as gentlemen we don't use that.. but...... ), checked there were no A/c registrations................ and it lasted 2.5 hours.........

Agreed - or Belgium

Might be totally crazy but just north of the airfield on the NE-SW road there are 7-8 regularly spaced, almost identical ?buildings?

I suspect this may be one of the old WW1 battlefields and the constructions are post WW1 farm buildings rebuilt to an identical design

Who ever bombed the airfield also seems to have hit a fair number of local buildings as well.....................
