So here are the overheads which should be a dead giveaway

nvubu
7th Jul 2012, 10:21
Silverstone it is.

The other photo appeared in this (http://en.espnf1.com/f1/motorsport/story/22499.html) article about Silverstone, and I rather assumed it was Silverstone. However, all the suggestions kept going north rather than south, so I guess it isn't.

I've found an original source of this image here (http://cache4.asset-cache.net/gc/3397809-18th-september-1943-t-for-tilly-a-lancaster-gettyimages.jpg?v=1&c=IWSAsset&k=2&d=OCUJ5gVf7YdJQI2Xhkc2QP7KlJv3v3iDjJk7h9kTosMCCJnuqH6QhTd0xz uNlIcxF426%2bdDXNh48ZfVb3cN4og%3d%3d) - still doesn't say where it is, although the caption below might help?

Anyone got an answer to the challenge at #2268? I think we've established it's not Silverstone as the overheads show 5 Bellman/T2 hangars with max 2 together, whereas the photo shows 3 'C' types grouped together plus a Bellman/T2, or possibly a T1, plus a distinctive non standard 'watch office/control tower, the 'C' types being mostly built pre-war. As far as I can make out on my 10'' screen there appear to be several Hurris parked near the hangars.

Cows getting bigger
9th Jul 2012, 11:18
I think the design of the tower is 5740/36 which was only allocated to 5 FTS airfields, RAF Shawbury being one of them. I'm also still intrigued by this one.

Hen Ddraig
9th Jul 2012, 12:25
The original picture of 2268 is in the Hulton archieve of Getty images, it shows the entire frontage of the hangars plus some more buildings and a tall tower backed by rising woodland on the left end. Difficult to make out detail on my small screen.

Hd

Flap40
9th Jul 2012, 13:37
If it is a 5740/36 tower the the options are Ternhill, Shawbury, Little Rissington, Hullavington & South Cerney.
All except Ternhill have the tower built in front of the hangar. Ternhill is the only one with the tower between two hangars and the difference in angle between the two hangars also seems to fit.

Cows getting bigger
9th Jul 2012, 13:44
Flap40, I think you may be right. Certainly the hangar layout fits and I'm pretty sure the Tower is a 5740/36.

No, it isn't Pierre. You are too far north.

In the early 70s Northwest had a flight which started in Seattle and stopped at Spokane, Bozeman, Billings, Helena, Pierre, Milwaukee and finally on to KDCA ... all in a 727. 10/10! You have control!! Except that 'er be in Zumzett, rather than the land of Devon dumplings. But only just... It's more interesting history includes the fact that it was one of the first aerodromes from which Meteors flew.

I tweaked the photo to give it an appearance of age, but by the time it was taken, Culmhead Radio Station had closed.

Having lived in the south-west, I knew that it was a secret monitoring station, euphemistically termed a 'government radio station'.... So, when I flew Vulcans I used to use that big white building as an IP for low-level bombing runs, knowing that the spies couldn't really complain.....:E

I knew the place as 'Trickey Warren', but it was also known either as RAF Churchstanton or RAF Culmhead.
