Auxtank

Yes, there are many, many hydrants dotted around. They were once used in panick-stricken earnest, pumping over a million gallons of water for nearly 16 hours in 1958. But we don't talk about that!

Haven't a clue

Deliberately out of the way behind the wire. Not in USA, and indeed thereabouts not very united at all.

Further in to the East maybe -

JENKINS
17th Jan 2019, 19:20
I gave away too much, and one of you picked up the clue. A lot of negative answers which I will cover in 45 minutes.

Auxtank
17th Jan 2019, 19:55
Breath suitably bated.

I'm sure we are east Med or in to sandpit territory.

As usual - I could be almost completely wrong.

JENKINS
17th Jan 2019, 20:12
Not Spain, UAE, or Sandpit. Drones? Not in my day back in 1993, only Drones then were in P J Wodehouse. Yes it was tight, wire at Northern end, but I operated empty to the main field. That much for the negatives.

dook
17th Jan 2019, 20:14
Turkey maybe.

JENKINS
17th Jan 2019, 20:29
Delighted to state not Turkey. My first visit, to family home nearby, 1963 by DH106, final departure 767 in 1993. In the interim, in the local area, HP67, B101, Type 175, HS780, VC10, C130, BN2T. I think that is it. Please note that so far I am dealing solely with the negatives. Five airfields involved.

dook
17th Jan 2019, 20:37
Does it get cold in the winter there ?

JENKINS
17th Jan 2019, 20:40
Current temperature locally 4 to 7. I have seen snow.

JENKINS
17th Jan 2019, 20:43
Now for positives. Yes to Eastern Med., I am sure that my next positive answer may not be necessary.

JENKINS
17th Jan 2019, 20:46
Of course, yes to Cyprus sorry you were last Chev.

Kingsfield?

jensdad
17th Jan 2019, 21:41
Doesn't look like Larnaca, Pafos, Nicosia or Akrotiri. So it must be Dhekelia?

JENKINS
17th Jan 2019, 21:45
I fear that the only buffer zone with which I am familiar was in the 1963 dust--up when the Ledra Palace Hotel in Nicosia became unavailable due to the division of hat city. Will it help if I state that village names close to this strip represent both sides of the division? The operator of the strip appears to express impartiality.

JENKINS
17th Jan 2019, 21:49
Jensdad wins with Dhekelia, where I kept my machine while operating at Kingsfueld. Sorry if a bit disjointed ce soir, water supply problems. House, not mine, and now fixed.

nvubu
18th Jan 2019, 17:48
Well, I did think that would last a little longer - It is Vis, Jenkins has it.

Quite an interesting history, but abandoned after the war, In recent times, there have been attempts to reactivate the airstrip. GE has images of it freshly graded in 2013, now it seems to back to grass.

Here are the other images,

JENKINS
21st Jan 2019, 19:23
Yes, sandy area. My machine continued South with me on my planned journey. Months later I returned but machine in bits in a different country. Not pilot error, and the perpetrator has been spotted on Pprune. I loaded it but didn't fly it that day. Night stop on day of photograph in national capital, and I was surprised that ale was available.

Believe demise of machine due to power lever malfunction. Unable to check, local militia peppered the machine with bullets in double-quick time, and journey to strip by road somewhat difficult. And yes, this is not USA.
