There is what looks like a stage behind the group, something they'd be unlikely to find during their postings in North Africa or anywhere else. So the photo might have been taken at Sharpe Field, Tuskegee, Alabama, where they trained. OH if correct.

nvubu
2nd Feb 2019, 12:33
broadreach - I know you didn't. I did think about letting you carry on down the 99th route, but thought I wouldn't :)

I always check to see if my images exist on GI - these did, but are identified as in the 923rd - whereas my original docs have them to be in the 827Th, 829Th, 847Th. I did miss the Dereham times stating that the first one was a Eye though :(

This is the closest I can get them to an aircraft.

Yesterday you said, you passed often but never visited?
As I understood from your other challenges you fly professionals in (and around) Europe.
Then this airfield is a nowadays a GA airfield and in the vicinity/approach of a bigger airfield?

France?

SLB

JENKINS

Dora-9
3rd Feb 2019, 05:29
Dook, I suspect you've mis-identified the airfield in Post #12054. I would contend that it isn't Rechlin but Lechfield. The Me 262's depicted are captured examples operated by "Watson's Whizzers" on 10th June 1945, about to depart Lechfield for Cherbourg (via St Dizier and Melun). They were crated up there and shipped to the US.

England south of the line from the Wash to Southampton?

chevvron

No well north of that line - Langford Lodge (that's the shoreline of Lough Neagh at top left) which gets occasional visitors thinking they are landing at Aldergrove.
OH again.

JENKINS
3rd Feb 2019, 09:48
Yes, Langford Lodge. A Martin-Baker link to the field is refected in the position of Chalgrove, Martin-Baker as was Langford Lodge, in relation to Benson. I sat as No.2 and witnessed my lead make the same mistake at Chalgrove as Dan with a 748 made at Langford Lodge. I dropped a hint! Lough Neagh? I try to leave a tiny clue in my screen-grabs.

I have a habit of posting challenges of airfield to which I have a (slight) relation.
Visited, flown from or passed by in the car or relates to Dutch air history.
Sometimes I also post challenges of airfields which I find on Google earth when searching for somebody else’s challenges.
Like this one, Grimbergen GA airfield with the two quite remarkable round hangars.
I read on the website of Grimbergen that the self supporting concrete structure is less than 10 cm’s thick!

Open house declared by Jenkins

JENKINS

Not on the eponym list, and no relevance to your other sporting examples. This sportsman, dead when field opened, was further renowned far from his homeland for his WW2 activities. One of his contemporaries, to whom he was a sporting mentor, found much greater sporting fame but less in his military role. That said, the contemporary knew a bit about 'stress.'

Good Morning Terry Dactil - your homing torpedo has hit the spot. Sangley Point it is (was), now known as Danilo Atienza Air Base.

The clue in the penultimate photo was the EC-121 wingtip, they operated out of there until it closed in 1971, but Sangley was the largest USN ASW base outside of the US at the time, with at least two resident P-3 Sqns (Cubi Bay was more for things off carriers).

The event was Ex Sea Rover, an annual SEATO ASW Ex, the format of which morphed into the Fincastle Trophy ( all Sqns operating from one base rather than the then competition of an adjudicating panel looking at results from different units and stations). Hopefully with the P-8 we will re-enter this excellent competition.

Over to you TD.

PS This was our 'score':

It isn't Brittany either

And here's an aerial for you.

The road layout still recognisable - but a lot more built up now.

No more pics for a few hours as am off out this evening.

Was that hangar design British French or American? Seen in a number of WW1 images, starting with Rembercourt, which Wikipedia says was French until 2018, then US Army. But it was close to the German border so may not qualify for this challenge.

Edit: "Tent hangar", also "Bessonneau hangar" for what that's worth.

I'm not sure on the nationality of the Hangar design. It isn't Rembercourt although you are closer to the mystery aerodrome than Brittany or Normandy.

Here's a closer view of the hangars

Tis blanks you are firing as it isn't Autrécourt-sur-Aire, and you are moving in the wrong direction away from the aerodrome with this one.

Does an aircraft or two help?

I wasn’t even aware that I was moving at all.
This was 35 minutes North of Rembercourt. So probably South of R’court but still in northern France.
Hope it helps for somebody of the nightshift.

Nice challenge by the way.
Off to bed.

Yes, you need to move south from your suggestion and away from Northern France.

2nd aircraft says "SOP" on the tail. Am just trying to organise a link to a larger version of the image - will be when I get home as I can't connect to my ftp site

Found another way - click here (http://www.nvubu.co.uk/pprune/20190207_17.jpg) for an larger image :D

Romorantin is too far north.

We are not in central France :ok:

On the 2 aerials North is indicated with:

Hopefully this won't take long. Although those who first looked at it would have had even more problems - My apologies for reversing the image. This should now be correct.

There is now perfect left-right symmetry about the center line, and I can't imagine that being real.

As terry Dactil says, one half of the image does appear to mirror the other. I certainly can`t talk though, a lot of my internet work gets lost in cyber space, normally due personal finger trouble!

That said, as a wild card thought, Seletar possibly.
