No Sycamore. Note my assertion that it is not mainland Europe.

Nevertheless, a European island ?

JENKINS

Thought on Sycamore's last - a bit of banter from Kalingrad would not entirely been out of place on this field.

JENKINS

Yes, in strict parlance an offshore island in Europe. No politics please!

Flap40

Was that road in the top left previously a railway?

No idea of the name of the airfield but the nearest village is just out of shot bottom right and is called Ivychurch near Lydd.

Edit: I think it is Brenzett ALG.

dook
1st Oct 2019, 16:21
Good searching Flap40.

That's its' name, or Brenzett Advanced landing Ground if you wish.

JENKINS
1st Oct 2019, 16:25
That's it. Advanced Landing Ground, but given over to V1 defence, 'diver' patrols. Main occupant a Polish Wing. Royal Military Canal nearby, and of course the wild expanses of Romney Marsh with its Rodney, Hythe, and Dymchurch Railway. First came to my attention quite recently, via PPRuNe of course.

Flap40
1st Oct 2019, 16:27
Rodney????

No. There has been for some time a light or miniature railway in the vicinity.
The RH & DR narrow guage railway is several miles away running just inland from the coast and the standard gauge railway which stops just short of Dungeness is to the west, just west of Brenzett village.

It's not the old RAF base.

India Four Two
2nd Oct 2019, 19:11
Yes, it is the new airport at Riyan, Yemen. I am not sure if the tower was there when I flew from that airfield in the early 90s. I was in a Zimex Turbo Porter, which we used to do a geological tour of Wadi Hadhramaut – spectacular scenery.

On the way from Mukalla, we passed the old airfield which was littered with decoy Il-28s, a reminder of the recent Civil War.

if that doesn't make your blood freeze nothing will
Driving around on the plateau north of Mukalla, it took me a while to get used to my driver stopping to pick up hitchhikers armed with AK-47s. As a consequence of nearly every male being armed to the teeth, the civilian Toyota pickup, belonging to the security detachment of my company, had a 0.50 BMG on a tripod on the flatbed!
