We are not only closer to Japan, but part of Japan.

Not the 13th though.

Here's an overhead

Do you mean part of Japan or the Japanese Empire ?

Nobeoka ?

dook
13th May 2019, 14:09
I think the air force unit may have also had B29s.

nvubu
13th May 2019, 14:12
Part of Japan, but not Nobeoka

The "mountain" casting a shadow has (or had) the same name as a rather more famous "mountain" on another island. The documents I have has the airfield having the mountain name as part of it's name, so name that mountain :)

nvubu
13th May 2019, 14:22
B29s don't appear on the Wiki page for this Air Force.

dook
13th May 2019, 14:26
Well, all I get from searches is Mount Fuji !!!!

Are we on the island of Fukue-Jima?

nvubu
13th May 2019, 14:41
Nope, we aren't on Fukue-Jima. You are looking at the wrong end of "Japan". In the previous image the white stuff is snow.

As an additional clue: the second part of the island you have named is part of the island name that does have the more famous mountain.

dook
13th May 2019, 14:54
Working on the word Jima there are a couple of small islands but with no famous mountains.

Time for a rest.

nvubu
13th May 2019, 15:05
Iwo...……………………...

dook
13th May 2019, 15:19
Iwo No Snow Here.

Perhaps the "mountain" is a volcano.

dook
13th May 2019, 17:20
Can't find an Iwo apart from the very obvious one and that looks nothing like the challenge.

sycamore
13th May 2019, 18:16
Is there an airport there any more...?
Confirm `N` direction ie L/R/U/D..?

nvubu
13th May 2019, 18:29
In the second image, north is around 1 o'clock.

No Airport there any more. but you can still see the outline of the runway and the hangar shown dead centre of the second image.

dook - you need to read back my clue.

The "mountain" casting a shadow has (or had) the same name as a rather more famous "mountain" on another island. The documents I have has the airfield having the mountain name as part of it's name, so name that mountain

You know what the obvious island is, and the short version of mountain is?

Also
You are looking at the wrong end of "Japan".

dook
13th May 2019, 20:45
So, Fukue-Jima is the wrong end of "Japan" and there is snow in you image.

We must therefore be north of Hokkaido as far as I can see.

The island of Kunashir is Russian but may not have been at the time of your images.

I'm out.

nvubu
13th May 2019, 20:46
Yes, keep on going. You are correct in that it may not belong to Japan now.

One further:
but you can still see the outline of the runway and the hangar shown dead centre of the second image.
Not on Google Earth though - try Bing instead

dook
13th May 2019, 21:14
Iturup ?

Might have a connection with Pearl Harbour.

I have done my bit - over to the rest of the crew.

Had enough, good night.

nvubu
13th May 2019, 21:20
Are we going Island hopping? A few more to go.

Here's an overhead from Bing. You can see the Mountain, runway and hangar.

nvubu
14th May 2019, 06:39
Max Tow has it - The mountain is/was called Mount Suribachi - hence the Iwo Jima reference, and the airfield is Suribachi Bay Airfield. Originally was a fishing village, developed into an airfield, nothing there now.

Paramushiru Island has switched between Japan and Russia a number of times over the years. Was part of Japan from 1875. Japan gave up sovereignty in 1951.

Google Earth sometimes has really poor coverage compare to Bing - compare the link in Ripton's post and the screenshot I've posted above.

Remnants of a roman road? It peters out when it hits Kemble to the north east.

If I may interject, for those that haven’t seen or connected the dots... Cows Getting Bigger a.k.a Dave Phillips flew his last approach yesterday.

Threads in the Military and Middle East Sections.
I've connected with him many times on FF but didn't realise he was on here as CGB.

Not too intimate but we visit friends there on a fairly regular basis. As I said the road name jumped out at me when I was trying to work out a relatively traffic free route out to other end of Long Island and I googled it.

Pardon my interruption, but I wanted to say a few words about Mr. Phillips:

My introduction to power-on stalls took place in 1976 during my second flying lesson. My flight instructor, a fine gentleman with 28,000+ P.I.C. hours, had asked me to climb to 4,000 feet and maintain level cruise at that altitude. As I was taking in the wonder of it all, my instructor placed his left hand on my right knee and began to lightly guide that hand toward my meat and two veg! Oh NO! I am trapped above the Earth with no ‘chute! What I failed to realize was that while he distracted me, my instructor had been applying increasing back pressure to his control yoke. We were in an ever-steepening climb.

Just as his hand reached my upper thigh, our wing lost lift and our 152 surrendered to the inexorable force of gravity. We plummeted two hundred feet and made a gentle recovery. My instructor said: “One day, you’ll be flying along with a pretty girl who will put her hand on your thigh just like I did. Pay attention to the aircraft; not her! Remember: Pull Back to go Up, Pull further Back to go DOWN!”

We were just inland of the Atlantic Ocean, cruising nearly a mile above a large cattle farm. He asked me to initiate a stall, and, against all instincts for self-preservation, I did. Pre-stall buffet shook the aircraft as the stall warning horn blared. We stalled. The windshield was full of green pasture and a number of brown Golden Guernsey cows who seemed not the least bit interested at our less-than-spectacular aerobatic exhibition. My instructor laughed and said: “See? Pull back to make the cows smaller. Pull further back to see the cows getting bigger!”

Though I never knew Dave Phillips, every time I saw his moniker it made me smile, for it caused a flood of clear and pleasant memories. May his cows vanish to tiny points of spectral starlight, but when he wants a gulp of fresh milk may he alight softly by their warm sides....

The cooling towers on the horizon, on the other hand, are in France. Luxembourg was not only occupied by the Nazis during WWII but was actually annexed, like Austria, into the German Reich.
