You may suggest it, and I would agree with you! ;-)

Here are two pictures I took on my last visit to Manila. The first one was taken at the intersection of the two runways, looking southeast down the shorter runway (Roxas Boulevard). The statue on the right is a memorial to Ninoy Aquino.

The second one is the lovely Art Deco terminal, which somehow managed to survive the bombing. It is highlighted on the reconnaissance photo as the Operations Office.

The other airfield near the coast of Manila Bay is the current Manila International Airport. The "island" at the top of the picture is the Cavite peninsula, which used to be a US naval base and airfield.

Sultan Ismail has the con.

Open House.

The Art Deco Terminal now houses a Fine Dining restaurant.

Sadly they have covered the "Apron" with a tin roof to provide more seating. Need to be creative to get the right picture.

I recommend their signature cocktail "Aviation", it's a knockout.

India Four Two
6th Oct 2017, 06:25
I'll have to try it next time I'm there. I was aware that there had been some changes. When I was last there, the terminal housed The Filipinas Library, but I see that has moved to the nearby Ayala Museum.

Is the Ayala Triangle Park still there or has the Ayala Corporation succumbed to greed and built on the site?

Sultan Ismail
6th Oct 2017, 12:06
The Park is no longer a triangle, the apex is being developed, however it is still a green lung for the CBD.
Incidentally the Restaurant is called Blackbird, a quick glance at the satellite view will explain why.
I will be dining there next Sunday, it's the young ladies birthday.
Have a great weekend folks.

Contrary to popular belief, it does snow south of the 49th parallel.

Heathrow Harry
10th Oct 2017, 06:31
Indeed but look at the neat snow clearance - footpaths, roads etc etc - so somewhere that gets a lot of snow often and is totally set up for it.

Pretty flat so maybe Wisconsin - ish....................

jensdad,

Sorry about that. The snow was a deliberate "white herring". ;)

Grand Canyon Airport, 4 nm south of the canyon, 9000' runway and 6609' ASL. That would be a QFE of about 800 mb, if you could wind your altimeter back that far!

A very busy place, with helicopters and fixed-wing tourist flights.

I took a flight in an EC-130T2. Even though I have quite a bit of mountain flying experience, I found it quite disconcerting to go from a few hundred feet AGL to over 5000' in a few seconds! See 3:00 in this video:

_GIZiOCjrAQ

I also took a Caravan flight over the canyon to Page and then a raft trip from the Glen Canyon dam to Lee's Ferry.
Grand Canyon is definitely a bucket list item.

Ah, but I foxed him with Quy Nhon/Qui Nhon last month.

Although to be fair, this one is still recognisable from the air.

Quite a bit further east, in the south as well.

Ah, the vagaries of the English language. By “a bit further east” I meant Vietnam and so I was also mislead by “Quite a bit ...”. ;)

Caution - thread drift.

No research today for me, as I’m visiting Yangon for the first time. A friend is showing me around and our first stop, very appropriate given the date, is the Taukkyan War Cemetery - 6400 graves and 27000 names of soldiers with no known grave, listed on the Rangoon Memorial. Very thought provoking.

Hmmmm. I reckon your overhead is the same airfield as my photo, which is interesting, as the contemporary description I have for it is:
This airfield in Southern France was in operation two days after the initial landings. On D-Day Maaf planes were making emergency landings on it. (30/01/1945)Which would mean mainland France.

I reckon your image is misidentified as I cannot line it up with Bastia-Poretta - even though the water course looks similar, there's no railway and the runway is totally out of alignment. However, I think I can line it up with where I think it is - no water course present today, but with the railway and runway matching. :ok:

Not had much experience with the GE overlay though, so I might be 100% wrong!

Wikipedia got me!
Their page about Bastia - Poretta has that aerial photo, but they clearly labeled it as Bastia - Borgo. DOH!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastia_%E2%80%93_Poretta_Airport

A bit more research reveals that there were several airfields at that location.

I'll try again calling it Bastia - Borgo
http://www.forgottenairfields.com/uploads/airfields/france/corse/borgo/Borgo.jpg
Photo looking south taken in early 1944, with in the foreground a Lightning P38. The first airfield is Borgo, the second large airfield is Poretta (todays Bastia Poretta airport). Two more can be seen in the distance. Between the two nearest, a very small runway can be seen, which is the one created by the French and used by the Germans. This little track was used for Piper Cubs. US Groups based at Borgo were 52FG operating Spitfires, 111FG operating P-51 Mustangs and 415NFS operating Beaufighters.

Why the kink in the road ?

Detour around what used to be a marker beacon transmitter?

I had never heard of Dade-Collier. The lack of buildings intrigued me, so I looked it up:

Begun in 1968 as the Everglades Jetport (also known as Big Cypress Jetport), the airport was planned to be the largest airport in the world, covering 39 square miles with six runways, and connected to both central Miami and the Gulf of Mexico by an expressway and monorail line. The airport would have been five times the size of JFK Airport in New York. At the time, the Boeing 2707 was under development and it was anticipated that supersonic aircraft would dominate long-haul air transportation. South Florida was viewed as an ideal location for an intercontinental SST hub due to the limitation that such aircraft would have to fly over water. Because of environmental concerns and the cancellation of the 2707 program, construction was halted in 1970 after the completion of just one 10,500' runway.
