I am currently waiting on my plane home in ATH.
I visited a ship in a harbour 3,5 hours away by taxi.
i would have prefered to travel via this Airport but it has rather limited connections.

When looking on Google earth the airport itself is blurred.
But what I thought to be te carpark was clear
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune.org-vbulletin/750x865/f088b199_0bdb_4efe_8455_228816d1156d_40ab85d3b9683b1f19f4fe6 ff14f712f083a3774.jpeg
But you have to start looking for an airport without parking but with marina.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune.org-vbulletin/750x887/d8a1e312_8442_44b0_98bf_c3198eebd3dc_459d8a31f67388a1e88ee70 033c64af5da03464c.jpeg

My flight leaves at 17:25 So you have 1 hour.
Or 4 and a half hour before I can respond.

It was taken from a DC-3 which had been chartered by a group, to fly them from Tauranga to Whitianga (all of 56 nm), to play golf. What a stylish way to go golfing!

I was also going to add "Captain Cook transited here". He put in here in November 1769 to observe a Transit of Mercury, hence the name Mercury Bay. While he was here, he became the first European to visit a Maori pa.

Just a note to `India Four Two`. Thanks for showing the Whitianga photo, it`s a very nice spot indeed & over the holiday season fills up very quickly, super fishing out in Mercury Bay. Cook pulled his ship up onto the beach while he was here, so they could clean the under side of the hull. The town is also quite close to Hot Water Beach popular with visitors. For our anniversary a couple of years ago, Wife & I took a nostalgic trip in the very same DC3, which included overflying Auckland Int at 500`, when it was quiet & on to view the City & Hauraki Gulf.

Yes it is, but this airfield isn't at Rapopo, and the images I've posted are not part of any action around Rabaul.

Here's what it looked like after the Japanese had been driven out and the airfield had been reconfigured by the US forces. If you look closely at the image, I think you can see the control tower from my first picture.

You can still recognise the outline of the E/W runway and surrounds now, but I originally thought it was a bit daft that GE was showing the airport/airport symbols. Turns out that it still is an airfield with an IATA code of CGC, and according to airports-list.com has a 1079m runway! If you zoom in on GE, there is an aircraft on it, but I doubt it has a 1000+m runway any more.

That's a good idea. Will try this once I'm up to date if no-one objects. I'm currently up to 30/01/2018 (page 389), so only 11 months of posts top go through.
The spreadsheet used to be a sticky - along with the what cockpit. No idea why it was removed from that list.

Just passed dook's first successful identification - to which he had to pass with an Open House - no way that would happen today :)

On disappearing old pictures wasn't there some discussion (under computing thread?) that at one time some people used a PPrune system where you stored your pictures in a folder on the board - but it had a limited amount of space so people had to delete old pictures , I don't know but there were also references to some other, old, commercial, site (like Instagram ) that had changed its rules and a whole bunch of images had gone south when people refused to pay for what had been a free service??? There seem to be a lot of posts asking advice on uploading pics so I presume it was a lot harder a few years back than it is now???

nvubu

I've expanded the information being collected in the spreadsheet to include Country, who set the challenge and who solved it.

Here is a read only link to the spreadsheet - clicky (https://1drv.ms/x/s!AsBD9MvRbikxm-Ed9K7OERjoJGvjZQ) - feel free to have a look and make any suggestions.

We have a clear "winner" for 2018.

dook set the most challenges with 72 and also solved the most with 55.
Jenkins is the runner up with 40 challenges and 34 correct solutions.

290 separate challenges in 2018. which is very respectable after the thread died a death in 2014/15/16. Long way to go, however, before the 371 challenges of 2011 are reached.

I've been trying to ask the mods if there should be a new Which Aerodrome IV thread as the previous two were too big at just under 300 pages, whereas we are now up to 550. Can't contact PPrune Pop as his mailbox is full, and not sure if I've managed to send an email to the site.

We need to come up with the text for a wiki. Here's the original set of "rules"

A historic picture of an aerodrome will be posted. Newer pictures are allowed but the theme here is to compare/contrast old with new as well as identifying aerodromes which no longer exist.
The person who correctly identifies it will be declared the 'winner' by the original poster.
That winner shall either post another challenge or declare the floor open. Anyone may then post the next challenge.
There will only be one challenge running at a time.
Try to use elderly photos and not Google Earth pics
Try to post images that are not already present on internet, as Google Image Search will find them if they are.
When confirming the correct location, the location and winner should be stated to negate any deletion of posts.
If the winner of the challenge does not respond to the notification of their success within 24 hours, the thread shall be declared "Open House"
If Open House is declared, time should be given for those who are not great at naming the correct location but may have some good images.
I would suggest that photos taken personally are OK as they show the aerodrome as it is now.

There is a comment on the first page of the fist thread by evansb that it shouldn't become a What Control Tower or What Terminal Building thread. I think that there's no problem with the occasional post of a Control Tower, terminal building or hangar, so long as there isn't a succession of them.

Some further

nvubu
31st Dec 2018, 10:12
It isn't really the photos that are the issue - and yes the old Pprune album had a limitation so for someone who used this exclusively (HH springs to mind) their old challengers are devoid of pictures.

Also when one of the free image hosting sites decided to implement at $399 annual fee for third party hosting all their images disappeared. They have come back now, but I know I went and removed all my images from their site and now post through my OneDrive that comes with Windows 10. My guess is that others did the same and jumped away from that platform.

So there are a fair number of challenges where the photos are missing, but the name of the location is still in the thread. I would suggest that these aerodromes could be revisited as there will be no duplication of images :)

It is when the posts are removed (you know who you are :) ) that is frustrating, as there are a fair few examples where a challenge has been made, then you can only see one side of the chat with posts saying no it isn't "X", and then the final answer say, "Well done abc, your turn now", and there is no indication of where the aerodrome is :( It is nice to see that these deletions have stopped recently :)

dook - I wouldn't bother, so long as the name is stated when control is handed over, that should be fine.

Try to post images that are not already present on internet, as Google Image Search will find them if they are.

There are ways to fool Google Image Search and I have done just that with several of my challenges.

My next challenge succeeds in doing it but reading your document I find it has been done before. However, I don't know what that image was but I suspect it's not the same one or aspect of the first one. Would that mean it's acceptable to post it ?

nvubu
31st Dec 2018, 11:15
I know you have, but beware, when one knows that you are manipulating a GS image, the right search terms will allow the same image, but unadulterated, to pop up - Your Speke challenge for example (Fred Olsen C-46 hangar) :ok:

I would have thought that if there is no image in the thread it would be OK, but don't repeat one that has been done within the past year or so. This year there have been 10 repeats.

With the disappearing images, do you remember the jaunt I took you around Africa to end up at Gura in Eritrea? When completing the spreadsheet, it turned out that I'd posted the same challenge before :( , but as the images were on Photobucket then had long gone :). I reckon I probably used the same images. The first time around it didn't last very long. :)

Also think that if the user who solves the challenge doesn't respond within 24 hours of gaining control of the board, that it should be an automatic Open House. Doesn't have to be a new challenge, just to acknowledge that they are in control and will be posting a new challenge shortly, or to declare Open House.

ve3id was on-line when I replied that he was correct, and was on-line 2 hours ago - I've send him a PM.

dook
31st Dec 2018, 12:28
The "on-line" facility is often incorrect. I am often listed thus when I'm not on-line.

ve3id will not see the PM unless he logs in again. It has now been more than 24 hours since he was given control and in the meantime the thread is stalled.

We had this problem on another site which I frequent, and it was solved by asking people to monitor when they had solved a challenge. Some people were in a different time zone, as is ve3id, so they merely declared OH and banked the win for another occasion. It works well.

dook - yes, I think that an auto open house should occur.
SLB. Seacue was the originator of the whole thread - was pointing at the thread What Aerodrome I, Page 4 where this was suggested

My interpretation of Seacue's suggestion is that if an Open House is declared, if you are a regular contributor either solving or setting the puzzles, don't immediately jump in with an image as you might be keeping someone new or an infrequent poster out. Can be intimidating to post on this thread for the first few times.

The record solve (in the last 2 years) is 2 minutes, with one of 3 minutes.

I also think we should ban the phrases - "This will be an easy one" and "This might be hard" or similar - as they are almost always wrong :)

Someone (guess who) has been deleting threads as we were up at Page 550 this morning. I wrote this when it was halfway down page 549. Went to check on ve3id and it is page 548.This is bloody annoying - My link to "this post" above no longer works because of these deletions. It is currently #10933.

It doesn't happen at all on my other site - people there know better and it's presently on page 1093.

Agreed. My job is one of those where I occasionally have to drop everything, for a few weeks. Indeed, there have been occasions where I’ve set a challenge and then been unable to ‘manage’ it. We can all still behave like gentlemen, yes? Perhaps a consensus is better than a hard-line rule on timings?

Self loading bear
31st Dec 2018, 18:18
Then we better rephrase:

If the winner of the challenge does not respond to the notification of their success within 24 hours, an Open house can be declared when there is consensus between multiple other posters which are on line.

Likewise might be added:
When the poster of a challenge does not respond within 24 hours of a posted answer, this poster can be declared winner if the answer is considered correct in a consensus of multiple other posters.

I personnally try to give indication ahead when I might not be able to answer.
Or indicate OH in advance when correct.
My chance will come another time.

I would like to emphasise that I really like the challenges with multiple photos or clues.
I also value the remarks of other posters on the same airfield or the comparison between then and now.
In that regard Jenkins saved the day at Koffiefontein!

All the best for 2019!

We back in Canada ?

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport ?

Actually yes, but the name is a bit of an annoyance to local pilots. It was totally political (aren't they all?) The original Bill Bishop airport is actually in Owen Sound:
https://www.owensound.ca/en/owen-sound-billy-bishop-regional-airport.aspx
whence the ace cameth.

Nobody calls it that on Tower, it is always "City centre" or "Island"

And you weren't fooled by the apparent disappearance of the antenna on the top of the CN Tower by haze?

CC has both the history and the "reverse history" - the future 12/30.

I'd like to comment on the "rules" discussion of a few days ago. Disapproval of Google Earth (GE) images can be understandable on the basis that it might allow anyone to post images of obscure airports to which the poster had never been. I suspect such posters would be quickly unveiled. And, on the other hand, how many in this thread have actually taken photographs of every airport they've ever been through? Some of the most interesting challenges in the last few months have been GE images, with accompanying cryptic clues.

Is there not some middle ground? E.g. airports we've been to/through/overflown?

dook
3rd Jan 2019, 08:45
I think it's fine as it is. Use of your last suggestion would remove a few of us from the competition. I would certainly have to leave. As an ex-military fast-jet driver I didn't use that many airfields.

As an example, how many people have been through Harrowbeer ? I drove around it in my teens when it still resembled a disused airfield but perhaps nobody else here has. Or Roborough, where I learnt to fly on the Tiger Moth (G-ANOR which is still flying). I lived nearby you see.

JENKINS has correctly identified Harrowbeer and has called OH but might be back in time to post a new challenge.

Asturias56
3rd Jan 2019, 10:53
I thought the challenge was THE AIRFIELD - not the exploits of the poster - similarly the age - why not modern airfields - most people don't have access to more than a few really old pictures - and if you get them off the web you'll be caught by Google Image Search (boo!! hiss!!!)

One thing that has struck me in my (short) participation is the that this thread - possibly above all others on Pprune - is civilized and run in a most polite fashion

I think we 're doing all right as is but we should be "mindful" of the rules - or rather guidelines set out ............... :ok:
