A better pixel photo can also be found on Newcastle airport 80 years.
But that is hindsight.
That the trucks were typical brittish did not help me.

My great aunt lived in Akeman Street, but in Tring, Herts; right opposite the Rothschild Museum.

Great photo of my local, dook. And possibly the first time in history that Northumberland has been mistaken for the Australian outback!

And now, on reflection, I realise that the bowsers rest on what became my usual parking spot, hey-ho.

I detect a BA short haul person, JENKINS? :)

Acklington or Ouston?
Short legged JPs but the closest one has a Mk 1 canopy and no tip tanks; could it be a Mk2?

dook
24th Nov 2018, 17:48
I've got over 2000 hours on JPs and Strikemasters and the Mk2 was an interim version, and it's neither of those airfields.

JENKINS
24th Nov 2018, 17:49
I regret not, simply low cost. Low cost, that is, in view of the pittance delivered by the company to its employees. Good fun though.

JENKINS
24th Nov 2018, 18:03
On the toss of a coin, Syerston? Most of my time was T4 and T5, great fun. Of course, my time was taxed rather than the tax free life of some pilots.

dook
24th Nov 2018, 18:20
It isn't Syerston either.

Are you referring to the fact that I flew the Strikemaster.

edit: to save you all pain, this is not an RAF flying training airfield.

JENKINS
24th Nov 2018, 18:34
So that cuts out Hullavington. How about a formal handover at Luton? The Cranwell stripe on a machine has now got my mind dithering!

Strikies - a frequent moan was that in the Kingdom there was no UK tax, whereas Loan Service in Oman attracted the attention of the taxman. I may be wrong of course.

dook
24th Nov 2018, 18:41
I think that was because loan service pilots were still RAF and tours were treated just like all overseas posts.

I was a civilian BAe company pilot.

Luton gets a :D

JENKINS
24th Nov 2018, 19:46

You do have the thread Jenks.

JENKINS
24th Nov 2018, 20:29

OH while I think!

24th Nov 2018, 20:31
I can't post because the last one was mine.

JENKINS
24th Nov 2018, 20:36
Here's one. At this field flew one of my favourite sportsmen, gave a succinct definition of 'stress.' Soon be bedtime, I used to sleep near here at one stage of my varied airline career.https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune.org-vbulletin/1440x1080/earth_postcard_1543095109_bf26ec9818abda90807990574b7435c0e5 b0fd62.jpg

JENKINS

On reflection, pressure rather than stress was defined.

Gliding...……?

dook
25th Nov 2018, 08:46
I've been trying to find this to no avail.

It looks to be UK.

Was it used for model flying ?

JENKINS
25th Nov 2018, 09:45
Believe no gliding, no knowledge of model flying. Former colleague, back-seater Sea Vixen, flew his own machine there, and I believe another colleague, WIWOL and back-seater Sea Venom, may have visited on occasion.

Noel Coward was mistaken.

India Four Two
25th Nov 2018, 19:11
Major thread drift here! Freya Stark certainly was an amazing character. Travelling unaccompanied, with local guides, from Mukalla to the Hadhramaut, in the 1930s.

In the early 90s I was on a seismic crew on the plateau that she traversed en route. I read her book after I returned and found that I could identify which geological formation she was crossing on her journey. Amazing observational and descriptive powers!

My mode of transport was an Aerospatiale Lama, which was a big improvement on her four-legged transport!

JENKINS

JENKINS
26th Nov 2018, 10:25
In terms of 'near' in that amazing landmass, yes. My father spoke with admiration of the beer in WW2 Bangalore. Keep looking, I had never heard of this place until sent there.

dook
26th Nov 2018, 10:43

dook
26th Nov 2018, 10:46

JENKINS
26th Nov 2018, 13:55
Tirupati, looking North. The RAF squadrons clue referred to the status of 'Hyderabad' squadrons, receiving benificence from the Nizam of that Princely state, and drawing attention down towards that area. My first Squadron was a 'Uganda' outfit, though I doubt that Idi Amin knew much about it.

I've flown out of it at least once and around that area several more times. Although that was 40 years ago there was something familiar about it. I suspect the photograph was pre-June 1940 as, I believe, flying training ceased then as the skies around that area became quite crowded.

dook
27th Nov 2018, 08:56
Good morning.

Italy ?

JENKINS
27th Nov 2018, 09:06
Grey morning. Not Italy I fear. USAAF units apparently used the field, B17 the machines, and the two units are extant if Wiki. is to be believed.

dook
27th Nov 2018, 09:47
Well, the terrain certainly doesn't look like UK.

Mediterranean possibly.

Were the B17s led by an "assembly ship" ?

JENKINS
27th Nov 2018, 10:14
Not Med., and I doubt that this theatre had the coloured ships for use in the formation process. Follow The Goat rather than that which moves sideways, for by so doing the scope of the search will be very much reduced.

The name of the field should be familiar to spotters worldwide, from Stockport to Santiago. However, it's presence in the air, very meaningful, is decreasing as the numbers increase.

JENKINS
27th Nov 2018, 12:40
Longreach it is, on the Tropic of Capricorn. As QANTAS phase out the lovely 747, the word LONGREACH on the fuselage will no more he seen by spotters as the 787 takes over........if it does of course.

Over to the 'herd,' and as an aside an American student used such a comment when being introduced to the UK Low Flying System. Can we forgive the Torrens Creek aberration? I gather it is a long walk. CGB probably deserves the turn, albeit owing us a solution from long ago.

After over two decades of flying I have no idea who or what Judwin is/was.

Are you referring to the post by sycamore or me ?

Resolution -- Judwin is the home of the former Westland factory in Yeovil. Very good grass field. Sycamore is teasing us, since he knows that I know that he knows it is Seletar. I think that if there is no further, he will be declaring OH, I hope there has been some head -scratching over the topic. Sorry to tantalise, dook, but you were doing very well.

'Raffle' was missed, Singapore of course. The War of Independence was post WW2 against the Dutch in their East India colony. I had a machine needing a 50-hour, arriving from Penang and departing for Bali, following Amy and Jason perhaps.

Bedtime.

Many fields were created in the low-lying Foggia area of Italy. The USAAF named theirs individually, but all I can find of this is the name Foggia Main. Recent reading gave me the idea after your note that 'twas not UK.

Well, I have the caption as Foggia Main.

Thanks, 40 Squadron perhaps. Very busy airspace. Not so busy at this next, though on my sole visit on a murky day there was much craning https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune.org-vbulletin/1440x1080/earth_postcard_1543171086_d2da804b1d8f0e6b11f3efdb852dce1fee 322fe2.jpg

Craning wouldn't have been necks methinks.

Wessex in general, a former HMS Flycatcher from a former existence nearby. This, of course, simply in latitude rather than a direct line.

Yes, Bremerhaven, and regret not Louisiana. Simply an Aztec, but in days long gone of limited approach aids, the dockside cranes were a touch threatening.

Looks like Africa doesn't it? But no.
Fairly close to the equator though (about 500 miles or so).
International and domestic flights until the mid 70's. Then many years of military only usage.
Enough clues for now! :)

Come back whenever you want -- but don't assume my "monitoring" time will match with yours. This is a global forum after all :)
This country has something in common with Brazil, historically. But Brazil is many hundreds of times larger than this country.
An additional point re "monitoring": Many folks choose to view Pprune without logging in, and only log in as needed to post. Just a thought.

dook
30th Nov 2018, 14:16
Agreed.

You said within 500 miles of the equator which is why I'm looking at South America.

Perhaps I should go somewhere north of Australia like Indonesia.

JENKINS
30th Nov 2018, 15:28
So, Portugal if I read the Brazil reference correctly. Baucau, East Timor? A nephew from New Zealand has worked in the country, says it was a difficult time. The 'Aardvark' I imagine to be Australian.

grizzled
30th Nov 2018, 15:34
Well done Jenkins!
East Timor's longest runway and what will likely become a busier airport than the capital (Dili) in the future -- if Timor tourism ever gets a good foothold.

Here's the view I had on approach the first time I landed at Baucau. The scarred landscape is from an IL76 that had recently crashed short of the runway...

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune.org-vbulletin/350x269/place_2003_pec_04afcc51ba0cab6fe5cb30f8279d8293047bcfcc.jpg

grizzled
30th Nov 2018, 15:48
And yes re the Aarvark being RAAF. At several keys points in the transition period after Timor's independence vote (from Indonesia) Australia's contingency plans and involvement included the potential of F111 use, hence many sorties over Timor.
Trivia: Baucau is the site of the only (publicly known) hijacking of an Australian military aircraft.

Over to you, Jenkins!

JENKINS
30th Nov 2018, 15:58
