When you said 'Angle' I immediately thought of an airfield of that name, but it's in Wales.
www.ukairfieldguide.net/airfields/Angle
This airfield is of note because in May 1943, a Sunderland landed here instead of nearby Pembroke Dock due to the fact it had a massive hole in its hull.
And to think that this WIWOL did his first tour at Wattisham !
Some of us used to frequent The Bell at Kersey. The landlord had two gorgeous teenage daughters and two of us invited them the officers mess summer ball in 1969.

Yes, Elmsett, and Open House. Not too far across the swede and potato fields from Wadi Shamm. The huts there made for an uncomfortable night when visiting, cold. The Angles, of course, being the 'South Folk' of that invasion, ergo Suffolk. Claret may have originated from French, at the time British, ho-ho, grapes being trampled on the large estate at Clare, 40 minutes down the road.

Thanks. The mast certainly gave validity to my guess. Now this which I have waited some time to put in. No to DDR. This airfield closed in 1956. I feel that rust may have prevailed in the bottom right corner, just as Rust prevailed in the centre of this very big city 30 years ago.

Well that's what had (has?) us confused. Meaning: what part of the UK meets your criteria of a European Island that comprises four countries?
So... I'm now assuming the aerodrome is located on the part of the UK that is the island we know as Great Britain....?

Another place that's built a runway extension and then painted 'X's all over it :)
Haven't a clue where it is though... Could it be on the same continent as Hobart?
Or is the extension to increase TODA.
chevvron
10th Jan 2019, 16:06
Or is the extension to increase TODA.
Displaced threshold meaning 'you 'a no land on 'a this bit' but the X would indicate not available for takeoff either.
old,not bold
10th Jan 2019, 16:08
On a minor point of order, you don't necessarily need pavement to extend a TODA. But if you don't have it, max take-off weight (mass if you must) might be limited by the take-off run (TORA) instead. But extending the TORA doesn't of itself extend the TODA.
Oh God, sorry, I just can't help it, it's an affliction........
Have you read Peter Swatton's book on aircraft performance ? I did all the illustrations for him.

No to the Four X Continent, tipping my cap to Terry Pratchett. The machine I flew that weekend had little truck with TORA, TODA, and so on. A former Caliphate, cotton groves, skydiving.

Back from coffee-housing in my local village, on a main trunk road, chaos, try this with a 'story' which came from an interesting exchange. Cold War, pictures of each side now freely available, this airfield in an area which I gather featured strongly but silently in said non-conflict. Passed by on many occasions but never landed.
