Lightning Mate

I know it's not on the list Reg, but so easy.

It's even a Hasegawa model you have used.

Noyade
23rd Aug 2011, 11:10

Curtiss P-40E Warhawk.

(Reg - AQ - Unusual panelling at the rear of cockpit?!)

RegDep
23rd Aug 2011, 11:23
I was wondering that too. That's why I was looking for torpedo bombers….

RP-40 : Some American P-40s were converted into reconnaissance aircraft.
TP-40 : Some P-40s were converted into two-seat trainers.

???????

Noyade
23rd Aug 2011, 11:23
That is the "landing gear jettisonable" á la HappyPass.

No, just another American racer similar to a shot-down LM challenge earlier.

Lightning Mate

Look familiar?!...

A little.

Similar to the Howard DGA-4.

Lots missing though....

Noyade

Why does the word "bet" appear as it does in post #1508...?

Noyade
23rd Aug 2011, 11:29

24th Aug 2011, 10:59
how about 1910?
Hispano-suiza engine, maybe?

RegDep
24th Aug 2011, 11:00
The timing is drifting the wrong way. No H-S.

Maybe need to add that the builder was not happy with his original car engine and went over to an Anzani later.

Not the least interesting feature of this machine is its engine—xxxxx. It is placed vertically in the machine, with the cylinder heads pointing forward so as to ensure even cooling. (The engine is aircooled.) At the upper end of the vertical crankshaft is a bevel gear which serves the double purpose of transmitting the power to the horizontal propeller-shaft and of giving a 2 to 1 gear reduction. The weight of the engine is somewhat great for its power, compared with modern aero engines, but it is stated by the makers that reliability has been their first consideration, and that they consider this of greater importance than low weight. The engine weighs 220 lbs., or slightly over 4 lbs ./h.p., but it is claimed to be as reliable as a car engine, and to require very little attention.

Edit: Hah! You are on a good site already, Trucky :ok:

British? A supermarine something?

RegDep
24th Aug 2011, 16:31
Not British.

This was as much an one-off aircraft as they can get: One number one man designed it, flew it only once, sold it to another number one man who didn't fly it at all.

RegDep
24th Aug 2011, 18:01
Whoops, I have scared out everybody else than Brian….

A further clue for lurkers: The wing and tail design was reused in another aeroplane type later, and several of them flew.

evansb
24th Aug 2011, 18:25
You say "...not British" but the design is similar to the Dart Pup as well as an Airspeed design built for WS Shackelton in the 1930s. It is not unlike the Curtiss-Wright CW-1 Junior. Presently considering a German design.. Scratch that, looks like the Siebel Si-201's tail is different than the mystery ship.

RegDep
24th Aug 2011, 18:50
Brian, it is an European design, the designer has a British connection, but this is not from his British period.

Evening LM,

Just got in for an early night!! Thought those struts looked like they were for variable dihedral and found the Waterman Flex-Wing in Aerofiles!

Edit:

Just heard from our IT guy; apparently, there was a break-in at the local exchange last night and a lot of copper wire was stolen, damaging a good many circuits!! Repairs are going on now and there may well be interruptions of service later this evening. Therefore I'll ask for an Open House now, while I've still got a connection and play it by ear and see what happens later!! Hopefully Graeme or Bri will drop in and snap it up!

AQ was a bit too easy really, took all of a minute to confirm it :ooh:

Edit: I see you've turned-in Reg, sleep well mate :ok:

Mate, there is an irregular irregularity (sic!) in PPRuNe that sometimes makes a response to get an earlier time stamp than the question (or one get a time advantage to another). No idea how it works but it might be something to do with mirroring servers whose clocks are not in sync.

Unfortunately, you apparently cannot run it "by order" :}.
