Not my sort of music either. I'll be on line a little longer in case you have a sudden flash of inspiration and make the connection with your earlier suggestion:)

But just in case, good night. Usual rules apply if you think you've got it:ok:

Aero Commander 100-180 Lark Commander ?

skytrain10
17th Mar 2012, 15:12
Apologies have been out and about today. Guess no one else around to second Brian's guess. Yes of course it is the Rockwell/Aero Commander 100/180 Lark Commander. Well done Brian :ok:- nice to see a mass produced aircraft can keep people guessing:)

Hi Brian...is it the IST XL-15 Tagak from the Philippines?

Lightning Mate
17th Mar 2012, 19:40
Good evening Ken. :)

I had some fun with Graeme this morning on Challenge and I'm waiting for him to cease .

Excellent call here mate. :D

Guess no one else around to second Brian's guess

Well there was mate, but I wasn't 100% sure, and I couldn't find your source. I was even finding some machines from the late fifties that looked similar.

On the other hand, the Tagak - confirmed kill there. :ok:

Lightning Mate

It seems my wingman agrees.

Hit it Ken.....

17th Mar 2012, 23:15
Apologies to all but we had unexpected visitors this evening so not had a chance to look in until now. Seems that both David and Graeme have seconded by guess - and Bri, I see you are online so I'll leave it to you to confirm (or not). Anyway assuming I'm correct it will have to be Open House as not had the opportunity to prepare anything.

Morning David...a motor glider I guess - small engines by the lack of any obvious bulges on the wing, or maybe a single engine driving two remote props?...German?

skytrain10
18th Mar 2012, 10:52
Take all that back - the Bossi-Bonomi Pedaliante HPA?

Lightning Mate
18th Mar 2012, 10:57
Bingo. :D

It's all yours Ken - and good morning.

skytrain10
18th Mar 2012, 11:04
Nice one....I had seen a side view of it some time back when looking for something else. Hadn't appreciated the wingspan though:)

Here's the next one:

No obvious propulsion system so I assume a jet.

From the USA Ken?

Lightning Mate
19th Mar 2012, 07:02
Evening Graeme.

Not much above five degrees here. :uhoh:

skytrain10
19th Mar 2012, 08:57
From the USA Ken? Not US Graeme - its European.

Not much above five degrees here. Positively warm mate...-2 last night and just reached the dizzy heights of 3C this morning.

Lightning Mate
19th Mar 2012, 09:10
Morning Ken.

The flap track fairings and the winglets do seem unusually large, so perhaps the aeroplane is bigger than on first inspection.

I surmise it's also a fairly modern design.

French?

skytrain10
19th Mar 2012, 09:46
Morning David - it's not small - 8 seats.

Not French - eastern Europe

And yes, a modern design

Noyade
19th Mar 2012, 09:52
Morning Ken/David.

Presently 21 deg. Just finished barbecuing on an open fire. Thai rissoles and vegies. Now sipping some white wine and with absolutely no idea what your challenge is Ken.

Polish?

skytrain10

Maybe Czech.

Evening Graeme - hic......

a modern design

Say, last five years?

skytrain10
19th Mar 2012, 10:44
Looking at Wiki's map of Europe - Russia? Do they make those kind of aircraft? Not Czech or Russia, but it is from a former USSR state - that borders Poland:ok:

Say, last five years? I believe so, although I cannot confirm as there is little information on when it was built - it certainly only flew within the last 5 years.

Edit, first registered in 2009

Lightning Mate
19th Mar 2012, 10:50

skytrain10
19th Mar 2012, 10:57

19th Mar 2012, 10:59
Apologies, but Czechoslovakia and Slovakia are not the same are they?

Ukraine?

skytrain10
19th Mar 2012, 11:36
Czechoslovakia and Slovakia are not the same are they? True mate, but they're not former USSR states - mind you the Russians did try after the war:)

Not Ukraine.

Do you want to see a photo?

Lightning Mate

Kensgaila VK-9 ?

skytrain10
19th Mar 2012, 12:07
Good call David:ok: Yes, it is the Lithianian Vlado Kensgailos VK-9 which is amazingly, a homebuild! Only the one built, or at least known of, which first flew in 2009. A good video on You tube here: "VK-9" - self-made (!) twin-engined 8 seats lithuanian aircraft !!! (Lithuania) - YouTube

Glad you both liked my challenge. David is yours the Fauvel AV.2?

Lightning Mate
19th Mar 2012, 13:19
Not a Fauvel Ken.

mmm....I'll give you that one - it's just that I have it listed as something else, the Chauvet. :uhoh:

Another case of two different names!

Your control Ken.

skytrain10
19th Mar 2012, 14:13
Thanks David. Not heard of the Chauvet name but as is often the case with light and experimental aircraft, as you say two different names (or sometimes more) for the same machine.

A 3-view for a change:

Hi Ho - it's off to class we go.....

Lightning Mate
19th Mar 2012, 16:15
Quick question afore hame.

No visible armament, so civilian?

Ridge Runner
19th Mar 2012, 16:20
Its got Belgian look about it?

skytrain10
19th Mar 2012, 16:42
No visible armament, so civilian? It was built for military purposes and was to have 2 x machine guns but never went in to production. There is some conflicting information depending on what source you use, but it seems the guns may never have been fitted. As you say they don't show on the 3-view.

Its got Belgian look about it? It may have, but its not from Belgium. European though.

Ridge Runner
19th Mar 2012, 16:47
A bristol lump up front, Ken? A Jupiter?

skytrain10
19th Mar 2012, 17:19
Not a Bristol Martin, but a very similar engine, which was built under licence in the country of this aircrafts origin.

Lightning Mate
19th Mar 2012, 17:21
European though.

'ere we go again.........

Ridge Runner
19th Mar 2012, 17:27
Got to go soon... so, Italian????

skytrain10
19th Mar 2012, 17:32
so, Italian???? No, but it lost out to an Italian aircraft in a competition to provide a fighter for this countries air force. Hence the challenge aircraft never went in to production.

To help you along the engine is a locally built Gnome Rhone.

Lightning Mate
19th Mar 2012, 17:54
Oh no!! - that engine was licence-built in many countries.

Notably Czechoslovakia and Poland.

skytrain10
19th Mar 2012, 18:20
Notably Czechoslovakia and Poland. Neither of those, but you are in the right area.

Lightning Mate
19th Mar 2012, 18:26

Lightning Mate
19th Mar 2012, 18:30
The map was different in the 30s.

Hungary or Romania?

skytrain10
19th Mar 2012, 18:31
Hungary or Romania? Hungary:ok: Clock ticking now!

Lightning Mate
19th Mar 2012, 18:33
Perhaps you would be interested in the AVIS III.

skytrain10
19th Mar 2012, 18:39
Perhaps you would be interested in the AVIS III. That's the one David:ok:

Your control mate.

Lightning Mate

There again, it looks a little small...so maybe a Myers Little Toot?

Lightning Mate
20th Mar 2012, 08:52
Morning Ken. :)

Are we going around Europe again or across the pond this time?

skytrain10
20th Mar 2012, 09:21
Morning David.

Stick to Europe with this one - and to limit the searches a little, I've moved in to western Europe this time:)

Lightning Mate
20th Mar 2012, 09:25
Thanks mate.

I've seen a couple of French jobs similar - right place?

skytrain10
20th Mar 2012, 10:32
Watkinson Dingbat? It is indeed Graeme - the one off Dingbat from 1938, last flown in 1975 when it sadly crashed. Now under restoration in Southampton.

Here it is at the PFA Rally in Sywell in 1974, not my photo, but its the one and only time I saw it:

skytrain10
20th Mar 2012, 13:39
Another HPA David?

Lightning Mate
20th Mar 2012, 13:55
No mate, this one is not human powered.

skytrain10
20th Mar 2012, 14:15
Ok thanks. In fact looking at it there is not much sign of any power! Is there a prop somewhere....maybe on that long nose...or a pusher behind the cabin?

Lightning Mate
20th Mar 2012, 14:19
Twin bladed prop on the front Ken.

The blades are just about horizontal in the original photograph, which is why you don't see much of them.

Lightning Mate
20th Mar 2012, 14:53
Would you like some help?

skytrain10
20th Mar 2012, 15:44
Would you like some help? Not yet! Work has called so not had a chance to look:(

Lightning Mate
20th Mar 2012, 15:45
OK I'm going home via bank - back soon.

skytrain10
20th Mar 2012, 17:43
It has all the looks of a solar powered aircraft, but not finding anything :ugh:

Lightning Mate
20th Mar 2012, 17:59
I say again - want some help?

skytrain10
20th Mar 2012, 17:59
I'll take it this time:ok:

Lightning Mate
20th Mar 2012, 18:05
OK mate.

This project was unique and probably will remain so.

There is conficting evidence as to whether it flew or not, but it was certainly built.

The "power unit" is entirely within the fuselage, and was considered to be potentially dangerous.

Nuvver clue very shortly...........

Wanna photograph?

There are cars in it.......;)

This needs to go tonight/today in Oz.

Lightning Mate
20th Mar 2012, 19:10
Ken,

If you are still at work you are in the wrong job.

Bri - wotcha doing?

skytrain10
20th Mar 2012, 19:29
If you are still at work you are in the wrong job. Unfortunately its a busy time of year, but at least I am working from home:)

Now you have provided a clue I am convinced I have seen a picture somewhere - an aviation mag I think. May have been Flight?

Was this a NASA design project/competition?

Lightning Mate
20th Mar 2012, 23:21
Not NASA - a private venture.

The "power unit" was contained entirely within the fuselage.

Lightning Mate
21st Mar 2012, 07:28
Good morning/evening.

The reason the pilot sat in the gondola above the undercarriage is that the propulsion system occupied almost the entire length of the fuselage.

What type of system could that be ?.....................

skytrain10
21st Mar 2012, 09:11
Morning David:)
Well, I found an aircraft powered by conventional batteries last night (amazing what you find!) which bears some resemblence in that the cabin is suspended beneath the "fuselage", largely because of the number of batteries needed. Unfortunately the likeness stops there :ugh:

SincoTC
21st Mar 2012, 10:09
Morning guys :)

Well. I suppose rubber bands of that size could be dangerous if they broke!!

I think it's called the Rubber Bandit designed and built by George Heaven

A Chance to Unwind (http://blog.cafefoundation.org/?p=3992)

Sorry, but it'll have to be Open House if accepted as I'm really hectic at the moment with lots of folk away and won't be able to monitor :(

Wossat on top of the fin/rudder?

Surely not the tailplane.

....and that wheel is bugging me - can't fathom if it's a partially-retracting nosewheel or what.

Lightning Mate
22nd Mar 2012, 11:30
Another thing - was it designed to be quick, because it certainly looks it.

skytrain10
22nd Mar 2012, 12:11
Looks too small to me, unless it had a large span. The tailplane span does not look unusually large in any pictures, although your reasoning may be sound and may have some relevence to another feature of this aircraft:)

and that wheel is bugging me - can't fathom if it's a partially-retracting nosewheel or what. It is the nosewheel.

was it designed to be quick, because it certainly looks it. Mmm, well it was not designed as a racer, but it is quick and has won speed (over set distance) records in its weight class which still stand today.

Thanks Ken.

Silly me - it had to be a Rutan.

The Model 81 Catbird.

skytrain10
22nd Mar 2012, 14:05
The Model 81 Catbird. That's the one David, the Rutan 81 Catbird:ok: Designed originally as a replacement for the Beech Bonanza in the late 80's, the one Catbird was put in to storage in the 90's and eventually restored last year to flying conditionn.

As for the records held, courtesy of wikipedia:
Catbird set two world records which as of February 2012[update] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Scaled_Composites_Catbird&action=edit) still stand. The first was in Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F%C3%A9d%C3%A9ration_A%C3%A9ronautique_Internationale) (FAI) class C-1b (land planes with takeoff weight of between 500 and 1000 kg) speed over a closed circuit of 2 000 km 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) without payload. For this record, set at Mojave (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mojave_Airport_%26_Spaceport) piloted by Dick Rutan, a speed of 401.46 km/h (249.46 mph) was achieved. The second record was set in class C-1c (aircraft between 1000 and 1750 kg takeoff weight), over the same course but piloted by Mike Melvill, at a speed of 413.78 km/h (257.11 mph).[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scaled_Composites_Catbird#cite_note-4)http://i551.photobucket.com/albums/ii457/kendyer/b9a1c3fe.jpg

Ja, but a piloted 12m model was wind tunnel tested.

The project was abandoned in the late 80s for no apparent reason.

It was later revealed that it was less detectable than the American stealth stuff. One report states that the Americans were upset when it was revealed to them.

Sort of, but I would say yes.

It's designed as a normal taildragger, but it has a good L/D ratio and may be used for soaring.
