Morning David!

Are we looking from the front, upper? Are those veins at the ends of the "aerofoils"? Jet powered?

RR

Lightning Mate
26th Mar 2012, 09:33
Morning Martin.

You are looking from the front and below.

The vertical structures are control surfaces embedded in the wing leading edge.

Not jet propelled, and launched using RATO.

Ridge Runner
26th Mar 2012, 09:36
OK. A "lifting body" machine perhaps?

Lightning Mate
26th Mar 2012, 09:40
Not really - a blended delta wing.

Ridge Runner
26th Mar 2012, 10:32
OK, I'm stumped!!! :(

Lightning Mate
26th Mar 2012, 10:52
OK mate - do you have anything prepared, 'cawz I'll give good clues. ;)

Ridge Runner
26th Mar 2012, 10:53
Yes, mate. I have one ready....

Lightning Mate
26th Mar 2012, 11:00
It's a UAV with a rotary petrol engine, and the engine has been specifically designed for that use.

More in a minute.........

Lightning Mate
26th Mar 2012, 11:21
Defence suppression drone.

Designed and built in South Africa late 80s early 90s.

Lightning Mate
26th Mar 2012, 11:31
Bingo!

All yours mate - just as well really because I have to leave shortly.

Ridge Runner
26th Mar 2012, 11:36
Thanks David.

Here's one for whoever is out there!!!!

Lightning Mate
26th Mar 2012, 11:37
I'm still here.

Lightning Mate
26th Mar 2012, 12:13
mmmm.....does it have a horizontally-opposed twin?

Ridge Runner
26th Mar 2012, 12:22
er... no, David

Lightning Mate
26th Mar 2012, 12:27
Now it's me who is stumped. :uhoh:

Ridge Runner
26th Mar 2012, 12:28
OK. Its a mod of a well known machine. It went in to limited production. It had/has a four-cyl lump up front.

Edited to clarify

Lightning Mate
26th Mar 2012, 12:32
Is that mod the fin/rudder?

Ridge Runner
26th Mar 2012, 12:33
Not as far as I know. In fact it looks much like the original ...... :)

Lightning Mate
26th Mar 2012, 12:42
I asked because it reminds me of a similar French job.

Ridge Runner
26th Mar 2012, 13:11
Not French in any way, David

Lightning Mate
26th Mar 2012, 13:42
Coffee break.

Was this modification the addition of a canopy?

Ridge Runner
26th Mar 2012, 13:51
Certainly the modification included the canopy as seen, yes.

Lightning Mate
26th Mar 2012, 13:57
So presumably it was previously a two-seater open cockpit.

Ridge Runner
26th Mar 2012, 14:02
never presume, mate!! :) No!!!!!

Ridge Runner
26th Mar 2012, 14:03
Another clue?

Lightning Mate
26th Mar 2012, 14:09
:uhoh::\:(:confused:......

Joy.....next lecture cancelled.

So was it previously a single-seater open cockpit?

Ridge Runner
26th Mar 2012, 14:55
So was it previously a single-seater open cockpit?

Nope!!! :E

It was previously a two-seat closed cockpit, David

Lightning Mate
26th Mar 2012, 15:04
http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/uu82/Lightning_29/reignac-sur-indre-maze.jpg

Ridge Runner
26th Mar 2012, 15:08
OK, this needs to move along....

1. a mod of a well-known machine
2. was produced in limited numbers
3. four-cyl engine up front
4. was a two-seat enclosed cockpit
5. is still a two-seat enclosed cockpit
6. had some very drastic surgery!!!!! :)

RR

edit: the bits that stayed pretty-much original were: rear fuselage/tail, front end (engine etc), undercarriage.....

Come on, you should get it now!!! :)

Lightning Mate
26th Mar 2012, 15:12
Therefore was it previously a bipe?

Ridge Runner
26th Mar 2012, 15:18
No, David. It was previously a high-wing! :)

Lightning Mate
26th Mar 2012, 15:25
Oh!!!!!....

edit - sorry mate, but I have to go home. :uhoh:

Ridge Runner
26th Mar 2012, 16:17
15 minute WARNING!!!!!

Its sunny and I've been invited to a BBQ!!!!! So, SC will have to hang on.... If i can I'll check later. I'll post another clue before I head off and ten, if it is guessed and then seconded I'm happy for the thread to move on!!!

SincoTC

Thassa Fauvel AV-60 innit

Tiz indeed mate :D

This small one-seater airplane, comparable to the JODEL D-9 "bébé" or to the DRUINE "Turbulent", was designed specifically for amateur builders. The prototype was constructed by Leonard D. Wolff (assisted by his friend Davidson) at Houston, Texas in the United States. The AV-60 made its first flight on July 14, 1963, piloted by Davidson, when it actually became airborne during a "planned high speed taxi run". The plane was exhibited at the National Air Show in Texas on November 3, 1963, where it was a big success.

Christened as Leprechaun (the imp of Irish folklore), the AV-60 had been developed by Charles Fauvel in collaboration with G. Jacquemin, an aeronautical engineer working in Canada. The construction plans were produced in English. It is a low aspect ratio flying wing, with a nose-mounted Volkswagen engine (converted for aircraft use) of 1300 cc, weighing 48 kg and developing 40 Horsepower at 3500 RPM. A formed plexiglas bubble canopy covers the cockpit which is located over the low wing. The most remarkable characteristic is the absence of a long conventional fuselage structure with a laminated wood shell structure comprising the vertical stabilizer and the rudder attach beam being further braced by a triangular tubular beam from the wing itself. The prototype was equipped with a standard fixed tricycle landing gear, based on that of the TIPPSY Nipper.

It says where?

I think it is a Piper J-3/PA-18 modified for ag-work... At present, I am unsure if it is serial-specific non-Piper produced aircraft. Several in-house mods have been produced on this venerable airframe. Still, it is on my top-ten list of best aircraft ever produced.

Lightning Mate

The only thing I've found is the Aeromod Loadstar Model 100

Loadstar Model 100 (http://www.probertencyclopaedia.com/cgi-bin/res.pl?keyword=Loadstar+Model+100&offset=0)

If that's what it is (and I see it has a different Reg, so there must have been more than a one-off), I think that Brian should take the win as I wouldn't have found it without his lead!

Lightning Mate

Well, this is interesting.

I like your shot, but I have checked the US register as above and that's what it says.

Having said that, I agree with your comments re. Brian.

The question is - when will we see Martin? Are we going to run with it as it is or wait?

Happy Clam shaving  :), goodnight Canada and sleep well :ok:!!

I note that Proberts' refers to it as a biplane, so where did Martin get the sequiplane from when I asked him?

It does mention a lower wing, which is what he first said, but I guess there must be other references, it is on Aerofiles sans picture (but as a two seater, so I missed it first pass), otherwise maybe in Air Pictorial or similar, I'm busy at the moment and there aren't many about, so I'll wait and see if RR turns up and says what is is!

Catchya later LM.

A sesquiplane in my book! - the lower wing being smaller than the upper!

Therefore no pics to go on so a very long shot.

Side-by-side trainer - 1 built -1918-1919.....

Kondor B.I / Kondor K-100

The all wooden biplane looks distinctive by its two-bay wing construction
with the struts set at a slight angle.

Oh well, back to the hard graft I suppose!

Rather straight rotors and not much room for any blade-droop, so is it relatively small?

PS. You didn't answer my question about size!

Lightning Mate
1st Apr 2012, 10:42
Morning TC.

Not Russian. A hit on the right country will undoubtedly find it.

Not very big - I'll look for some dimensions.

This was a crane project based on a design which was built.

The company is much better known for building fixed wing aircraft.

Lightning Mate
1st Apr 2012, 10:51
It only has room for two people. I can't find dimensions but it doesn't seem to be any bigger that a Bell 47.

I don't speak the language of it's home, but reading an article I think it could only lift 300 kgs.

Rotor diameter 10 metres.

The training version first appeared in 1965.

SincoTC

All yours mate. :D

SincoTC
1st Apr 2012, 11:28
Thanks LM, Stingrays is where I found it (and spent a long time last night looking for it).

My gripe is that the missing site covered all VSTOL aircraft and projects, not just rotorcraft!

I would have found it last night if the pictures and drawings at the top of the XZ-135 page bore even the slightest resemblance to the challenge, because of this, I didn't scroll all the way to the bottom and find the extract from a Czech journal which show the challenge (BTW the tiny drawing is captioned Z-35)
