Looks like the engine was designed to keep the pilot cool !!!!

Noyade
10th Jun 2012, 09:31
From what I've just read, it was a disaster and they eventually buried the engine in the fuselage which then drove twin props on the wings via chains.

Lightning Mate
10th Jun 2012, 09:37
A Pemberton Billing ?

Possibly the PB-1 Supermarine.

Noyade
10th Jun 2012, 09:39
That's the one. :ok:

YHC.

Lightning Mate
10th Jun 2012, 09:46
Thanks Graeme.

Now, would you like an old biplane or a very old glider? :)

Noyade
10th Jun 2012, 09:56
If that's my choice, not the glider.

Lightning Mate
10th Jun 2012, 09:57
OK then.

A jet maybe ?

Noyade
10th Jun 2012, 10:06
Love a jet! :ok:

Must be a project? Big hole at the front? > British?

Yes - yes (with intake bullet) - and yes. :ok:

Noyade
10th Jun 2012, 10:23
Bum looks big? Ramjet involved?

Lightning Mate
10th Jun 2012, 10:27
No.

No engine stated but looking at its' year, I'm sure it would have been an afterburning turbojet.

edit: just found more info' and that's exactly what it was.

Noyade
10th Jun 2012, 10:33
Found it, but I think the artist has it wrong? It should show a compound swept wing - of 60, 50 and 30 degrees?

The Supermarine Type 545?

http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/6889/supermarinetype553.jpg (http://img266.imageshack.us/i/supermarinetype553.jpg/)

Lightning Mate
10th Jun 2012, 10:37
You have found exactly the right picture, but it's incorrectly labelled.

The 545 was indeed compound sweep - wanna go up a few numbers ?

Wotcha doin'? Check the file properties of your image - it gives the correct designation. :ok:

Noyade
10th Jun 2012, 10:42
Okay...how about....?

Another Brit project mate.

Noyade
10th Jun 2012, 11:01
do you guys have a four-day weekend ?

Three. But we're now pushing for four.

Lightning Mate
10th Jun 2012, 11:04
We only got it by moving the May holiday to this month for the Jubilee.

Yours a Frog?

Noyade
10th Jun 2012, 11:08
Yours a Frog? Another Brit project mate. I think we crossed posts.

Lightning Mate
10th Jun 2012, 11:16

Lightning Mate

Noyade

Biplane please!

Lightning Mate
10th Jun 2012, 11:43
Sorry mate, I was taking a call from my brother, who is with Mother.

Noyade
10th Jun 2012, 11:54
Mate, if you want to talk more on the phone, please do so. Don't let me get in the way. This challenge business is not important and just a bit of fun. Wanna call it quits for today? I can look at your biplane later?

Lightning Mate
10th Jun 2012, 11:56
We'll carry on mate - it was just an update call. :ok:

Noyade
10th Jun 2012, 11:57
OK.

A German giant of WWI?

Lightning Mate
10th Jun 2012, 12:05
Yet another Brit.

Noyade
10th Jun 2012, 12:05
Two very large exhaust stacks?
The biplane tail has three castor wheels?

Lightning Mate
10th Jun 2012, 12:10
Two big exhaust stacks yes.

Three engines in it's original form.

Three skids under the lower tailplane elevator.

Noyade
10th Jun 2012, 12:13
Well done mate, Mr Grahame-White strikes again. :)

I note the progress on the "challenge" thread. The Hiller was easy - I found it some time ago.

Back to you.

Lightning Mate
11th Jun 2012, 20:32

Unfortunately not a Tellier - wrong part of the world.

Noyade
12th Jun 2012, 05:44
Thanks for the Champagne mate. :ok:

Its 1530 hrs here and around 45 mins ago I drilled a 4mm hole through a hot water pipe. Thought I'd have a look at SC while the plumber repairs it.

Is this a French/American collaboration for the USCG?...

Wanna new challenge?

Ridge Runner
12th Jun 2012, 11:50

Lightning Mate
12th Jun 2012, 12:28
Long way from there Martin.

Ridge Runner
12th Jun 2012, 12:32
A Curtiss???

Lightning Mate
12th Jun 2012, 12:37
You're forgiven for thinking so, but not a Curtiss. ;)

Lightning Mate
13th Jun 2012, 10:27
The challenge was an experimental US Navy machine.

It is very small (18 ft. wingspan) and there is a very good reason for this. Why would this be...?http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/src:www.pprune.org/get/images/smilies/smile.gif

Ridge Runner
13th Jun 2012, 10:28
Hello David .... Sorry, i got distracted. A machine intended for a submarine?

Ridge Runner
13th Jun 2012, 10:30
ah, how apt .... the Martin MS-1?

Lightning Mate
13th Jun 2012, 10:38
That's the one Martin. :ok:

Lightning Mate
13th Jun 2012, 16:15
Welcome back Ken - holiday? :)

Ridge Runner
13th Jun 2012, 16:26

skytrain10
13th Jun 2012, 16:32
See you're still there Martin....a European machine, or perhaps something more exotic:)

holiday? Yes David, an extended weekend - got back last night:ok:

Lightning Mate
13th Jun 2012, 16:37
I think you'll find Martin doesn't log out when he leaves.

You will have noticed that I have adopted a new "ghost" style of silhouettes. It works even with images which are originally mono. Just helps to vary things a little.

I reckon this thing might be from eastern Europe.......

skytrain10
13th Jun 2012, 16:44
have adopted a new "ghost" style of silhouettes. They are quite impressive....much work involved?

I was hoping he may just look in before leaving. I was going to look at central/eastern Europe although with Martin's past track record it could be from further afield - South America, Asia etc.

Lightning Mate
13th Jun 2012, 16:59
....much work involved?

Just one mouse click in Photoshop and then re-adjust colour balance.

Seemples.

European, Ken.

I'm sorry boys but I couldn't get back to the thread last night. my laptop is set to log off when i shut down but sometimes it doesn't! Computer logic! :(

RR

Lightning Mate
14th Jun 2012, 08:55

Eastern European ?

Ridge Runner
14th Jun 2012, 09:07
No, David. Go south

skytrain10
14th Jun 2012, 10:17
Morning...Italian mate? Ambrosini?

Ridge Runner
14th Jun 2012, 10:33
Italian? ... yes, mate! Ambrosini ... no! :(

skytrain10
14th Jun 2012, 13:39
Not had much opportunity to give this my attention today. Nothing obvious springs to mind. I'm guessing a civilian or military trainer design that did not go in to production? Perhaps IMAM or possibly Agusta...a predecessor to the CP-110/111 range maybe?
Alfa engine?

Ridge Runner
14th Jun 2012, 13:42
Hi Ken!!!

One built
1934, I think

Not the manufacturers you suggest ... :)

that's rather odd bracing, isn't it?

RR

Ridge Runner
14th Jun 2012, 15:12
Is that wing forward-swept? It has the look of a sailplane about it, too? any link?

RR

skytrain10
14th Jun 2012, 15:56
Is that wing forward-swept? Nope, probably just the angle of the photo.
It has the look of a sailplane about it, too? Good reason for that - it's classified as a motorglider:ok:

Ridge Runner
14th Jun 2012, 16:02
ah, not a UL, then?

skytrain10
14th Jun 2012, 16:06
ah, not a UL, then? Correct, not a UL.

VX275
14th Jun 2012, 19:13
Did it start out life as a Slingsby T31?

skytrain10
14th Jun 2012, 20:12
Hi VX275
Did it start out life as a Slingsby T31? Nope, and no connection that I am aware of. This aircraft was however based on a mass produced glider that first flew in the 1930's, utilising the wings and tail assembly of that design.

skytrain10
15th Jun 2012, 07:22
All quiet so time for a clue....early 1960's design. As far as I can see just the one built.

Lightning Mate
15th Jun 2012, 07:40
Morning Ken.

Not had much time lately - is yours based on a Grunau ?

skytrain10
15th Jun 2012, 07:44
Morning David:)
is yours based on a Grunau ? Not based on a Grunau, nor is it a German design. The glider it was based on was produced in considerable numbers - over 2,000 were built.

Lightning Mate
15th Jun 2012, 08:15
Based on the Antonov A1/A2 ?

skytrain10
15th Jun 2012, 09:17
Based on the Antonov A1/A2 ? Yes, in this case the A-2:ok:

Noyade
15th Jun 2012, 10:07
G'day mate. Did Antonov do the conversion from glider to motor-glider?

skytrain10
15th Jun 2012, 10:41
Hi Graeme, hope all is well? No, this was not done by Antonov. It was another company, not Russian, but from a former USSR state.

Lightning Mate
15th Jun 2012, 10:59
Might that be Ukraine ?

skytrain10
15th Jun 2012, 11:03
Might that be Ukraine ? Not Ukraine mate....further north.

Lightning Mate
15th Jun 2012, 11:44
Well, I've been through all 1960s manufacturers of Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia and drawn a blank.

Looks like it will have to be someone more clever than me to get this one.

skytrain10
15th Jun 2012, 11:57
Well, I've been through all 1960s manufacturers of Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia and drawn a blank. In that case you've missed it - look again at Lithuania. We've had previous challenges from this manufacturer.

Ridge Runner
15th Jun 2012, 14:03
the RK-5, Ken???

skytrain10
15th Jun 2012, 14:41
the RK-5, Ken??? On the right track Martin, but the RK-5 was an altogether more substantial looking machine. Different manufacturer but similar kind of numbering system:)

Ridge Runner
15th Jun 2012, 14:54
so, a Kalinkauskas machine?

Lightning Mate
15th Jun 2012, 15:00
A BRO design ?

skytrain10
15th Jun 2012, 15:24
so, a Kalinkauskas machine? No, note from Kalinkauskas, but the deisgners names does begin with K and end in S!

A BRO design ? Not a BRO David. Incidentally I was expecting you to get this:)

Lightning Mate
15th Jun 2012, 15:37
Incidentally I was expecting you to get thishttp://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/src:www.pprune.org/get/images/smilies/smile.gif

Lightning Mate
15th Jun 2012, 15:58

How's your head Martin? :ugh:

skytrain10
15th Jun 2012, 15:59
the BK-1, perhaps???? by Balys Karvelis Not that Martin.

I wonder why................did I post one from the same designer? No, but you guessed one correctly from this designer not that long ago:ok:

skytrain10
15th Jun 2012, 16:02
Do you mean the designer person or the company? The designer and the manufacturer are the same - although in one source the spelling of the name is slightly different, ending with an A instead of an S:)

More clues....
- powered by a Dnepr M-72 Motorcycle engine
- built in 1961
This manufacturer has produced a whole range of homebuilt/amateur build aircraft, the latest of which flew for the first time in 2009.

Just back from a hectic business trip and gonna be pretty busy for a while yet, but will try and get on-line where possible.

Nice clues Ken, It seems to be the Vladas Kensgaila. VK-4 "Žuvėdra" (Aka Kensgailos Seagull)

Open house please if correct, as I've got to go and get some provisions in as the cupboard is bare (and a very short sleeve too :()!
