Gentlemen,

I have the saddest of all news. I have received the following personal e-mail.

It is possible that I am the only one who knew RegDep by his real name Heikki. He loved to call himself "your wingman"

Dear friend of my beloved partner who has unexpectedly passed away today. I was the one who had forwarded you the airplane picture some months ago. So I happened to have your email. I knew that he has enjoyed so much being connected with you, he had such a lot of respect for you and really saw you as his good friend. Wishing you all the best and please keep him in good memory. If you would like to know more, please just contact me. Anja-Christina Albert

Very sad news indeed David. There is not a lot one can say at times like this. I for one could not confess to knowing him, other than from our exchanges on SC but he certainly brought his own unique sense of humour and never ending enthusiasm to the thread, and one can only assume he lived his life in a similar way. He will be missed by us all. Our thoughts must also go to his partner Anja-Christina.

Rest in peace Heikki, aka Reg, aka RegDep.

Oh dear David, that is very sad news!!

I can only echo Ken's comments, he said it all!!

Only this afternoon, when I managed a brief look at the thread, I thought how Reg's input made such a difference and looked forward to his return from this latest break; alas now not to be, I/we really shall miss him greatly!

He was a friendly and knowledgeable participant in this and many other Prune Threads. (I think that you should consider posting your announcement in those too, but I expect you've already thought of that).

Good morning all

After the sad loss of Heikki (RegDep) I have been thinking how best we can remember him and his contribution to SC over the years. In a recent PM exchange with him it was clear that he had not lost his enthusiasm for the thread. In light of that, and as a tribute to him, may I propose that we rename Silhouette Challenge II after him. Perhaps just "Heikki's Silhouette Challenge", or "RegDep's Silhouette Challenge"? Not very original but I think it would be a nice gesture that would have meaning to us all. I guess this would need the Moderator's approval, but I would hope in the circumstances they would comply.

Finally, I am sure that Heikki would not want SC to pass away with him, so I believe we should continue.

Thoughts gentlemen?

Ken

Hi,

Brewster XA-32.

Ridge Runner
25th Oct 2011, 21:59
Thanks the one, One11!!!!

By 1937, the LVA was looking for a modern instruction plane for flyers, observers and gunners. Koolhoven received the list of demands end 1937. In February 1938 the prototype performed a first flight. In this prototype, a low wing with upward slant was used. It had a fixed undercarriage and a fully enclosed cockpit. The fuselage was abnormally long, to house the observer. The plane was engined by a Wright Whirlwind.

http://i1001.photobucket.com/albums/af140/peach38336/KoolhovenFK56.jpg

The second prototype differed considerably from this. It had a straight wing, placed much higher; and a shorter cockpit, situated further forward. The observer was not in the cockpit but sat in the open air. The undercarriage was now made retractable, in large bulbs below the fuselage.

The final model, of which the LVA ordered 20, had a further improved undercarriage - now fully retractable into the wing. The FK-56 again had technical problems. During the delivery flight of the first LVA plane, a wing broke off .... The wing design was of course revised. By May 1940 the LVA had received 10 of the 20 ordered. Not a single one of these has actually flown due to the outbreak of the war

In 1938, Koolhoven received an order from the Belgian Air Force (Aéronautique Militaire Belge) for 20 FK-56, destined for the École de Pilotage Avancé. In these, an Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah was used. However, serious problems arose with the delivery of the engines. Consequently the first seven FK-56 could only be delivered shortly before May 1940. They never flew operationally. The other 13 were never built, as the Koolhoven factory was bombed out by then.

SincoTC
27th Oct 2011, 13:32
Ah! I see someone has picked up on my clues :D

It is the Dzialowskich DKD-I (Roman numerals it seems)

Engine Haake (misspelt Reply to LM's comment about challenge aircraft), Year First Flight 1926 (generally speaking quite striking) and country as Karlark pointed out :)

Stanislav and Brothers Myachislav Dzialovskich after winning his glider "Bydgoszczanka" on the next contest in Gdynia, the summer of 1925 started to build its first aircraft. They were very inspired the relative success of the brothers Gabriel. Stanislav Dzialkovich, who was 9 years old aircraft designer spent repairing and maintaining aircraft, and five years as chief of the flight park in summer school Budgosche. The construction of the aircraft was made ??possible by using a local philanthropist John Krieger, who with his own money bought a German engine Haacke. It was under the engine and built the plane, received the name DKD-I . The fuselage was placed in the courtyard of the designers in Budgosche. A construction of the wings and final assembly - in flight school. The aircraft without an engine weighed just 158 kg, and its cost amounted to PLN 2400.
DKD-I aircraft was flight tested February 1, 1926 Sergeant Muslevskim. plane was considered quite successful, but the pilot shortage as called bad view from the cockpit. After the necessary modifications November 20, 1926 the aircraft took off designer himself. And the plane that was originally conceived as a double was used exclusively as a single. A May 25-27 Dzialovskich made its first flight in Poland coach a sport aircraft - from Budgoschi he flew to Warsaw in Torun (total flight time 2 hours 10 minutes). In Warsaw, the aircraft proved influential people, but during the return flight the plane was broken. On the return flight to Krakow it was renamed the DKD-III.

Karlark has requested an Open House :ok:

Just got in and off to bed soon, but glad to lodge my agreement with Graeme's claim :D

Thanks gents, for the confirmation.

So sorry to hear about Reg. We shared a lot of e-mails together trying to crack AviaQuiz. For a guy who only owned one book on aircraft, he did remarkably well in all challenges and outfoxed me many times. He had a dry wit and a black sense of humour. For the DC-3 tailwheel on AviaQuiz he spotted it straight away but kept me guessing. When I asked him why he did that he replied "I didn't want to spoil your fun mate!"

It was always about the fun. Every e-mail he sent ended with, "Are we still having fun?"
I've sent my condolences to his wife/partner (thanks for the address David) and one to Reg....just in case....;)

In honour of Reg and his only book, The Observer's Book of Aircraft 1961, here's one from it...

I bought a few of them in the 90's, don't know if they're still around. Largely American content, but what interested me most was the projects or "In Development" section. I've always wanted to use them here but could never find them on the net. I guess the World moved on and they were forgotten? http://i551.photobucket.com/albums/ii457/kendyer/8c815ca2.jpg

But, it is in Aerofiles...the Brutsche Freedom 180 from 1995.

There are earlier models, going back to the 80's, but they all bear the Freedom name.

Trevor....if you've done your lawn (must have a big garden if you haven't), what do you reckon?

SincoTC
29th Oct 2011, 15:04
Rain stopped play mate, but got the grass cut OK plus some other work :),

Just been looking at Graeme's challenge. I was going to say it's the Brutsche Freedom 28 (also shown as the 28/40), it is earlier and not mentioned in Aerofiles, which shows the Freedom 180 to be a four-seater, Graeme's looks like a single (as does your photo)!

Hi Trevor...nice to see our rain has spread! It's finally stopped here.

Well the Freedom 180 is described as a 4 seater but the picture certainly looks very much like Graemes?

Found a photo of the Freedom 28 and it appears not to have the visible engine exhaust, and more importantly was around and flying in 1986 when it one a prize at Oshkosh! Graeme had said it was from the mid 90's.

SincoTC
29th Oct 2011, 15:21
My current thoughts are that the Freedom 28 was the earlier one at Oshkosh in '86 and that a version called the Freedom 40 appeared in the nineties! Your photo looks like a single and I suspect it's a 40 and wrongly labelled.:)

The photo of a 28/40 in my first link above, does show the exhaust, so maybe that's not a 28 either, and the forty was another model

Edit: It seems the designer Neal Brutsche died in 2003 and on a homebuilt forum someone was replying to his brothers announcement and obit said he was looking for plans eight years earlier for the Freedom 40

skytrain10
29th Oct 2011, 15:44
From what I can see there is a Freedom 28, a 40, a 180 and a 180STOL. There is also something called a Sport Utility. But not too many pictures!

The 28 is too early...can't find a year for the 40....the 180 is the right vintage...

Think we had better wait for Graeme:)

Edit, you realise we could get a few of these courtesy of Graeme's AeroCrafters magazine!

SincoTC
29th Oct 2011, 16:32
Sorry Ken, very windy here now, the line dropped out and wouldn't re-connect :ugh:

My money's on the Freedom 40, but like you say, I can't find a year and Fright Archive shows nothing at all for Brutsche! Aviastar lists the models but again not the years!!

you realise we could get a few of these courtesy of Graeme's AeroCrafters magazine!

So long as Graeme sticks to subjects that are on the Web, like this one appears to be (although not a cut and dried conclusion) I'm easy with that thought :E :uhoh:

Several mentions of AeroCrafter in queries about Freedom 28 and 40, but all lead to dead ends :\

I am probably biased, but one thing I think we are all agreed on is that it is the Brutsche Freedom, but some doubt on the model number. SincoTC
29th Oct 2011, 18:34
Evening Ken,

Sorry for the delay in responding to your last post, but I only I just got back home!

I think that there's quite a bit of confusion surrounding the various model numbers and photos, however, like you say, Graeme said it wasn't on Aerofiles (which the 180 is), maybe (for the sake of Mel's list) he will have a definitive answer, but I agree that he would probably have been happy to accept just Brausche Freedom as a valid answer, so please go ahead and post another challenge!

Very busy today (despite rumour control on another thread) with a very short lunch break.

Is this something from Sagem?

Sorry mste, like you have been a little rushed today.

Not by Sagem....we have had other UAV's from this company on SC.

Afternoon Martin...someone has finally got there....yes, it is an EADS product. Several different models use the same model name, but each one has a separate number. Happy to accept the model name only.

All. I have discovered that I made an incorrect statement in one of my replies. I went searching on the net, and have just found another article from a reliable source regarding this UAV, which states that "it was derived from the Dyn Aero MCR.4S". The original source that I used for my challenge made no reference to this fact, so Trevor, please accept my apologies...you were closer than you thought, and even closer than I thought you were! It explains why the MCR.4S came up in your search.

Evening Ken,

That explains a lot, the similarity seemed uncanny!! I did have a quick look to find a connection but without the EADS part of the equation I didn't find one :)!

That now unlocks the log-jam and turns up a new (to me) site :E! Seems it's the EADS Surveyor 2500

Hi Trevor
Seems it's the EADS Surveyor 2500 It is indeed and sorry once again for sending you off on a different track...certainly not intentional. I only found reference to Dyn Aero whilst looking it up in Flight.

No need to apologise Ken,; Dyn.aero seem pretty quiet about it and I couldn't find any mention of the connection on their site!

A good challenge and surprisingly hard to find given its characteristics :ok: Although it does seem like the search engines are getting worse (the advanced search facility seems to have vanished from my favourite)!!

This one's not very good, but it's all I have at the moment :)

Decided to come back for a last look...is it the FVA-2 Blaue Maus?

Or if not, the FVA-1 Schwarze-Teufel?

Edit to say....looking closer I would say the FVA-1?

Decided to come back for a last look...is it the FVA-2 Blaue Maus

Ditto, to see if there were any answers :) !

It is indeed the FVA-2 Blaue Maus :D Well, it was a development of the FV-1, they are very similar (and I think some of the photos may be mis-labelled)!!

Natty construction involved:

Very interesting article on it's designer, quite an extraordinary career Wolfgang Klemperer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfgang_Klemperer)

skytrain10 has control Edited to say skytrain has requested an Open House. Sleep well :ok:

Thanks Trevor, must admit wasn't too sure. I found a picture of the FVA-1 from a similar, but not identical, angle which looked about right. But as you say they are very similar.

Am just about to hit the hay so will have to be Open House. If no one has stepped in overnight I'll have one ready for the morning.

Good night.
