Evening Trevor. It was designed by Gene Smith, who designed the Backyard Flyer. It is also referenced as the Valley Engineering Ultralight Biplane. I mention that just in case that's the name being looked for:)

Hope you've had a good day. Been making the most of the nice weather and attending to the garden, sadly interrupted by work on rather too many occasions:(

Good to see you entering in to the spirit of things.

I met someone today who "touched" the Queen I also know someone who falls into that category...but it was in the UK, not Wagga Wagga. I've shaken hands with someone who shook hands with Princess Margaret:)

Lightning Mate

Noyade
4th Jun 2012, 10:37
Hi Ken. First thought I had when saw it was a miniature version of the Siai-Marchetti SM 1019A. Now I know it's not, but is it the same layout? The cabin has a distinct 'drop' at the back meeting the fuselage line?

Noyade
4th Jun 2012, 10:44
Or a scaled down Bird Dog?

The BAC (Brutsche Aircraft Corporation) Freedom 28?

Lightning Mate
4th Jun 2012, 11:12
Did this not cause much discussion here last October ?

skytrain10
4th Jun 2012, 11:28
Siai-Marchetti SM 1019A There is a similarity in shape, but certainly not size. No connection Graeme
The BAC (Brutsche Aircraft Corporation) Freedom 28? Not that, but similar in shape.
Or a scaled down Bird Dog? Again similar in shape, but no connection.
The original concept of this aircraft was a reduced scale version of a popular light aircraft, but the obvious difference is the drop down behind the wing. So imagine this with a straight line from behind the wing to the base of the tail and you'll get a better idea.....:)

Lightning Mate
4th Jun 2012, 11:33
Ah......back to my bumper list then.

I suspect I've been doing the same as Graeme. :uhoh:

Capella single-seat ?

...er no - the tail's wrong.

skytrain10
4th Jun 2012, 11:46
I do find it odd that this aircraft does not seem to be in Aerofiles. Or at least it's not listed under the original name it was produced under, nor the current name. There is howeverplenty of reference on the web, as well as photo's. Unclear as to whether the aircraft remains available, but from articles I have seen it probably is...it doesn't help that the manufacturer doesn't have a website!

skytrain10
4th Jun 2012, 11:51
Capella single-seat ? No, but a very similar aircraft. I think this design predates the Capella though.

Lightning Mate
4th Jun 2012, 12:26
Are the wings foldable/removable ?

Oi Graeme - help!!!

skytrain10
4th Jun 2012, 12:44
Are the wings foldable/removable ? Not that I can see.

This aircraft design won an award at a major aviation show in Florida in 1983. The designer is also known for a very retro looking single and two seat open cockpit monoplane, which first appeared in the 1986.

skytrain10
4th Jun 2012, 12:58
I'm sure it would help if you can work out what aircraft this was originally based on. They share the same model number:ok:

Lightning Mate
4th Jun 2012, 13:42
Is that number a 3 ?

Wozzat Sun 'n Fun ?

skytrain10
4th Jun 2012, 14:02

skytrain10
4th Jun 2012, 18:56
Well this morning I found the Hipps J3 Kitten - but it isn't that. You should have looked further. It is the Hipps J3 Kitten - originally launched as the Anglin J3 Kitten, which was based on a scaled down Piper J3C-65 Cub:ok:

It's indeed not the Cosmic Wind, but you're correct about the rest.

skytrain10
5th Jun 2012, 08:21
Is it the Ast Special "Shoestring"?

Lightning Mate
5th Jun 2012, 08:37
The Shoestring it is. :ok:

The Condor Shoestring (originally known as the Ast Special and the
Mercury Air Shoestring) was a Formula One racing aircraft built by Carl
and Vincent Ast to compete in the Cleveland National Air Races in 1949. It was a
highly streamlined mid-wing cantilever monoplane with fixed tailwheel
undercarriage. The mainwheels were covered with spats. The original aircraft
(registered N16V) was extensively rebuilt in 1965 and 1974, and by that
time had won fourteen first places, three second places and four third places.

Over to you.

skytrain10
5th Jun 2012, 09:49

To be clear, this aircraft is still available.

Edit to say, David, I feel Graeme has an unfair advantage here, providing of course he can find it! To try to even the odds, first flew in 1994.

Lightning Mate

Well, I have a list of all Canadian distributors/manufacturers of kit/homebuilt aircraft and nothing's coming up.

It's back to that sharp slope to the rear of the cabin again, which must be a clue. Does it also come as a trike?
