Dublin 2nd feb, 2015

Sim: WAL 2N departure, East Midlands, smoke on board, QDM interception, "where are we", vectors for ILS 27. My partner got the same except he got non-standard departure. We both had LOC and GS failure after breaking out of clouds. Continued visually. Make sure you discuss everything with your partner, ask for checklists, brief everything. They are looking for good CRM and MCC, precise flying is not that important.

I personally got some HR questions and the technical part consisted of questions about gravity, does the moon have gravity, does the sun have gravity... Then a few 737 questions like number of seats, number of airplanes. Other guys on that day got more squeezed out on the technical part.

The guys are easy-going. They don't push you, don't try to put you in a bad situation.

Hi all,
I'm wondering and would like to ask all of you who got positive answer after the assesment; how to pay for type rating? I mean is it should be one payment or you/we are to pay total cost in few rates?
And also what about total price, there is a information about 28500E but what about the VAT? Should we pay or not (VAT)?
When I've been learning for CPL that was obviously whithout vat, but now?
thanks!

Hi!
Anyone in Dublin on 18th february? PM me :)

5th Feb 2015, 18:06
Did my inteview on 26th of january in Dublin and I got today positive call:

SIM: take off from Liverpool rwy 27, wal 2t sid, radar vector for ils rwy 27, visual above minima and go-around do to rwy incursion, then repositioned for ils. My partner had the same departure, but this time the radar was out of service, so we had to do the entire procedure, the instructor asked him what type of entry would he do for the hold, and asked me if I agreed. So we did the entire procedure, became visual above minima and go around due to blocked rwy, repositioned to land.

HR:
- Was the course expensive? How much did it cost? How did you fund it?
- Are your parents in aviation?
- What do they do?
- How do you think the TR is going to be?
- The most difficult moment in you training
- Pick 3 bases

Tech:
- B737 MTOW?
- B737 ceiling?
- Imagine one day we are on the rwy at MTOW, can we go directly at max ceiling?
- Why not?
- On the 737, what powers the flight controls?
- And the Flaps
- If the Hyd sys B fails, can you actuate the flaps?
- What is V2?
- How is it calculated?
- What is TORA?
- What Is TODA?
- How much is screen height?

Now I'm due to start the TR on mid/late June ;)
Good luck to everybody!!!

Hi guys.

When making a profile on CAE, what did you guys tick on the 2 boxes that says.
1. Supporting Crewmember program
2. Pilot Provisioning Job

Some of my RYR friends say that you are supposed to click both.

And if you tick the 1st box which training location do you pick ( im guessing Dallas isn't it)

Also this question on the regions you want to work in, should you tick all the boxes if you can work wherever. Or only europe as RYR operates here.

Firstly thanks a lot to those people explaining how the assesment is and their experiences, I found it very useful.
I would like to get some advices because I don't know if it is normal or if something is going wrong. Last week I received the famous e-mail from CAE asking for my CV and some questions. One day after I answered the e-mail with the information required, but 10 days after that I haven't received further information.
I don't know if my aplication is not able to proceed in the selection process and this means that my aplication has been rejected or what to expect.

Anybody has been in the same or a similar situation?

Hi guys! Done the assessment in DUB on the 9th of Feb. and today got a positive reply!
The simulator part was as described in all the previous pages, East Midlands WAL2N dep and usual airwork with fire emergency.
Tech. questions for me:
How do you calculate the fuel for a flight? (Taxi, trip ecc)
What is the height of the jetstream? And the direction overhead us?
Why we have takeoff segments?
What is the difference between metar and taf? If you are on a flight that is supposed to arrive in 4 hours you look at the metar or the taf?

Go prepared and everything should be fine!! :ok:

Lot's of good information on the assessment here.

However like lots of people (I know) I'm still stuck after a year without any response from CAE/Ryanair regarding my profile on the CAE website.

Is there anyone that can provide more information on how to actually get an interview/assessment?
Any information or relevant experience regarding this would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks everyone

Would you advice simtech or virtual aviation for a few sim hrs as I have never flown the 737 sim

22nd Feb 2015, 08:10
Annita,

If you have got your assessment date already and they've told you it is at Simtech, see if you can get booked in there for just an hour or so - they are quite flexible to squeeze you in, but it might be at 0-stupid-hundred-hours, so think about this if its the day before your assessment, how it might affect your rest patterns.

The assessment profile is very basic so don't stress too much if you cant get booked in - 737 sim experience is an advantage, but not essential. The sim at Stansted is quite different from the sim in Dublin, so if you are being assessed there, Virtual Aviation might be a better choice.

Good luck

I used Simcheck (737 simulator Dublin, Ryanair interview and simulator assessment (http://www.simcheck.net/)) for assessment prep, which is at an airport west of Dublin. I bought 2 hours at the price of 400EUR. Simtech offers 2 hours for 550EUR, I thought it was too much and found something cheaper.

I've just received the phone interview today, but as difference with what I read from previous pages, I didn't received any inmediatly Yes or No, instead of this the girl told me that she will pass the information of the phone interview to her coleagued and they will tell me more information. I hope all to be good!

Hi guys and girls!
I had my assessment last week in Dublin, and it was just like all the other guys said.
Interview:
HR: basic questions about my work experience, are any of my family members into aviation, pick three bases
TECH: what is clearway, stopway and screen height; about my MEP airplane on which I passed my ME/IR exam - electircal system (generators and batteries) and about the engines; where does a swept wing stall first and what can we do about it; which planes have a stick pusher; how many seats does the 737 have.

SIM we had Dublin and liffy departure, some vectors and speed changes, then the assessor freezzed the sim and asked me where we are. Then Toilet fire and vectors to ILS - landing

Hope it helps! Everything was really relaxed and they are looking for your knowledge, not holes in it :) Got a positive call
Cheers!

And have you guys heard of anyone being rejected after Crewlink have done their research?

plikee
27th Feb 2015, 07:17
Depends a lot how quick your references get back to them. I don't know anyone that failed, unless you've got unspent convictions and didn't tell anyone, however guess the process is painful. I work in a UK airport and it took me nearly 2 months to get everything sorted for a full pass. If you are based in the UK, with a criminal record without references, you can get at least a temporary pass for 1 month

PrivatePilotDA40NG, as for years CAE/OAA students get preference for interviews. These will be guaranteed interviews if they meet the "hidden requirements regarding retakes on exams". You could still give a try do the MCC course in CAE seems to give you the same privilege.

Hi people!
Had my assessment last week in Dublin.
8 of us, they paired us with the person that was opposite of you at the table where you are given the first briefing.
I had my interview first, very relaxed and they are very nice, and then my sim.

What planes do we have?
How many?
How many bases do we have?
How many pilots do you think we have?
Fuel capacity of last acft i flew.
What was it's vne

Mach
AOA
Critical AOA
What is mist and fog in a metar
How are thunderstorms created
Lenticular clouds
What can you expect to find below a thunderstorm during an approach

Try to be as calm and relaxed as possible. There are 2 assessors.

Sim, we where all supposed to do a SID out of East Midlands and none of did a SID, all of us rwy heading and then turn xxxº. Some general handling, intercept inbound QDM of NDB. Join hold and an app. Some had smoke, others didn't. Some did several GA others didn't. If you did, you were repositioned to D3 more or less and you land.
Looking for CRM!

I hope this helps some of you, I haven't received and answer yet.

Good luck all of you!

Would I correct in thinking that they aren't many competency based questions asked ? All of the questions look to be more technical based and related to the stuff studied in the ATPLs.

Hello people,

From who has been to assessment and passed.
Can you give us more details about cabin smoke procedure or in general emergencies.

the questions are the followings:
1) did you put on that fake oxygen mask during cabin smoke emergency ?
2) FOR all emergencies did you ask for QRH drills and checklists ?

Thanks in advance :)

Fabu

You do not put on O2 masks, you should call out of checklists and qrh, although you won't read them. As soon as you ask for them consider them done.

Hi all,

My first post here on PPRUNE. I've been reading this post for months, just a quick question:

- What do you guys who have succed in RYR assessment recommend; studying from ATPL books straight-ahead? or just with ACE THE TECHNICAL PILOT INTERVIEW.

People seems to just focus on ACE, disregarding ATPL books.. Can someone who has succeded or is going to RYR assessment help me? Thx.

By the way, applied as a cadet Sept'2014, still no notice by now.. LOL

I suppose it's going to be a long wait if they contact me.

Hi all!
I think it's important question for us! Just wondering and asking someone who already have an assesment or just know about financing your/our TR.
Who provide loan for TR ? irish bank ?(which have any confirmation from FR that you will have any income from flying) OR you are made to do it by yourself in your country?
What about rates for example for 2years? If there is any special loan provided by Storm/FR how many %more you/we will pay ?
I'm wondering if it's good to take loan even if I'm able to pay let's say cash to decrease my income for taxing.... ?
Last question is about "deals in bases" the income is in EURO currency but living across europe could be cheap:D or expensive :ugh:depending from country. So are there any diffrencies between some countries, do you know what to expect and where :)?

Hi everyone,
I'm also going on the 18 March assessment in DUB.

For those interested in timelines: I've applied at the beginning of FEB15, got the "send us your CV" mail two weeks later but replied with a week of delay.
Got the "we'll call you" email on the next day and I've been called on the day after in the morning.
The phone interview is very quick, mine lasted 6 minutes including explanation of what was to be done next.
Questions were very practical on the license held: type of license (EASA or JAA), issuing date, MEIR expiry date, date of last flight, completion of MCC and date of last SIM, concluding with my total flying hours.

Cheers!

Hey guys, just a quick question to all those who have recently been successful and it is the same question as @theiceman747 asked but didn't really get a response and I am also extremely interested to know:
Should you be studying from ATPL books straight-ahead? or just with ACE THE TECHNICAL PILOT INTERVIEW.

People seems to just focus on ACE, disregarding ATPL books.. Can someone who has succeeded or is going to RYR assessment help, seems ACE is enough to get you through the interview if your SIM check is good enough am I correct or way off???? Be great to hear some feedback, thanks.

Hi guys!
Was in Dublin at the end of Feb, and got in:ok:

I looked for all the questions I could that have been asked before and made a list of "subjects" that were asked. I then studied from ACE only. I already posted my interview and sim assessment.
If you read through this thread you will get a good idea on what has been asked. I don't think it is worth buying the banks... but that is my opinion.

(ATPL) I am not gonna write down all the questions I got, as ALL OF THEM are in previous threads wrote by others. hi guys, went to the assessment last week, here's what I got:

for the interview, a lot of personal HR questions:
- tell me about yourself/your current job
- why did you chose the flight school you attended
- tell me about your instructors and how did you find yourself with them
- how much did you spend for your training and how did you pay for it
- which characteristics would you bring to Ryanair
- if you find yourself in the cockpit with an unfriendly captain, how would you cope with that

then a very short technical part:
- what is electricity
- why different cable widths/how does resistance vary with width
- voltage of the 737 electrical system
- what was the electrical system on the aircraft you flew for the MEP training (DA42) and how do you get AC from DC.

For the sim we were based in Liverpool with RWY 27 active, Wallasey departure and ILS for RWY 27.

appfo09
23rd Mar 2015, 19:38
Mate to be honest you didn't had the best questions from everything that is available out there. What answer did you gave them when they asked What is electricity ? Funny I am just so curious ...

Well done to u anyway !

ENG.3_start
23rd Mar 2015, 20:21
I did reply shortly ad without elaborating too deeply, if they want you to explain further they will ask you to do so.
So I simply said that electricity is a physical phenomena involving a flow of electrons within a material, which current flow is used to power instruments and systems.

FreaKy Pilot
24th Mar 2015, 08:58
SIM :

- WAL2T DEP out of Liverpool (EGGP) runway 27
- General handling : climb/descent at 1000ft/min, turns, climbing/descending turns, no steep turns.
- ATC asked us on what QDM we were and then to intercept QDM 300° to the LPL NDB.
- Sim frozen, the assessor asked us on where we were and to point it on the chart (use the DME from the ILS and the QDR from the NDB)
- We entered the hold as instructed (parallel entry) then immediately after : galley fire.
- ILS rwy 27 full procedure

I had exactly the same scenario both as PM and PF.

INTERVIEW :

- What do you want to talk about ?
- Why do you want to join Ryanair ?
- Why do you want to be a captain ?
- Why not easyJet ? (I am living close to Geneva airport)
- What was the most difficult time in your training ?
- Pick 3 bases.

Then I talked to the same guy with whom I did the sim for the technical questions :

PERF :
- Are you very good at performances ? (This one was tricky)
- Why do we have take off segments ?
- Does a single engine aircraft have take off segments ?

AERO :
- What is Mach tuck ?

MTO :
- What is the cause of jetstreams ?
- At what height do we find jetstreams ?
- Where do you find lenticular clouds ?
- Are they a good sign or a bad sign ? Why ?

Then I had questions about Ryanair :
- What aircraft do we have ?
- How many ?
- Why did we ordered 737 MAX ?
- What are the differences between the B738 and the B737 MAX ?
- How many seats in our B738 ?
- How many cabin crews ?
- How many seats in the MAX ? (I answered 200)
- Exactly 200 ? (I said no, around 197)
- Do you know why ? (I answered : due to an emergency exit or a toilet and it seemed to be correct)
- When do we receive the 737 MAX ? (2019)

At the end of the interview, both of them were friendly and we cracked some jokes but they played the good cop / bad cop during the interview. Just relax, there's nothing horrible !

Starting the type rating in August.

Good luck guys !

Cheers

Great feedback here from everyone - thanks to all!

For anyone who applied recently through the CAE website and got the interview, did you fill out anything in the "Additional Info" section? I just put down a quick description of my personal profile and interest in Ryanair but not sure if it's better left blank.

And just to confirm, they get back to you later with a request for your CV, right? As far as I'm aware some time back it was a requirement to upload a CV right away during the CAE registration but to my surprise when I filled out the application at no point was a CV required!! That makes it a very level playing field...

Cheers!

plikee
24th Mar 2015, 11:36
I don't remember at any point in last three years an option to upload your cv. Maybe you are getting confused with the way Oxford/CAE cadets do or used to do.

Bearcat F8F
24th Mar 2015, 12:00
A friend of mine who made it through the process about 3.5 years ago said it was a bit different and you uploaded your CV during registration. Maybe he forgot it also after 3.5 years... who knows.

At least it's good to hear I didn't miss anything. But I find it rather strange that they don't request a CV immediately because this way they must have thousands of applications which look almost identical. The playing field is very level - good for guys with minimum everything, not so good for those who have a bit more to show. That I found very surprising.

So I guess now it's just a waiting game.

Hey guys, check this link:
Ryanair sheds light on recruitment process at ATO symposium | Pilot Career News (http://www.pilotcareernews.com/ryanair-sheds-light-on-recruitment-process-at-ato-symposium/)

According to this, they have around 1000 pilots coming in for assessments per year with a 48% pass rate.

Please note that this was posted in June 2014. However, that's also when the recruitment started to bloom up. I doubt there's more assessments than 1200 pilots, making it 150 assessments in max 3 days per week.

I attended at Stansted on Feb 5th, 4/8 including myself got the green light after 13 days.
I also know a girl who got a negative after just a few days. (From the Dublin assessment)

gjansen2012,

Did they email you about a time slot for the call?

I didn't get any email about when to expect the call so I am not really sure if it was them but have a suspicion it might have been given I almost never get unknown calls. A friend of mine who joined over 3 years ago said they didn't tell him when the call was coming either but maybe things have changed since then.

P.S. I suspect yesterday everyone was still on holiday. Could be wrong.

They do send an email telling that they are going to call you and it has dates and times (usually +4 working days since the reception of the email and office hours as times).
The number is shown in the call (no "unknown" caller) and they do leave a voicemail message if you have the voicemail facility.

Hello gentlemen

I recently applied for Ryanair using the CAE web site where I created a profile and then selected the Ryanair job tab. I'm a newly qualified pilot without type rating.

I notice that people have had emails from Ryanair to let them know when to expect a phone interview. When I made my profile on the CAE web site there was no place to enter my email address, only a contact phone number. I also thought it was odd that although I can list my flying experience, there was no place to enter my exam scores and how well I did with retakes etc.

Has everyone else had the same experience? I just want to make sure I;m not missing something. I realise some people have their CV's sent to Ryanair by Oxford Aviation Academy but where else do Ryanair get their applicants from? Id have thought they used a better system than the CAE profile site I used which only lets a small amount of information be entered.

Any help much appreciated.

Bearcat F8F
9th Apr 2015, 21:57
When you create your initial application form you should have entered an email address. Otherwise you couldn't continue filling out the rest of the form IIRC.

There is an "additional" section in the CAE form. Use it for whatever you see fit. There's a lot of debate about whether it's best to fill it with some useful info or leave it black. People have had replies with it blank. I put my exam scores in there plus some other stuff and got a reply with a request for my CV.

Good luck!

8 days from initial application to getting an email.

Updated my application a few times the day after I applied and then decided to leave it although I was wondering myself if every time that you update it the countdown starts from zero again. I'm not really sure. My plan was to wait for about a week and if I didn't hear anything then I would delete everything I wrote in the additional info section and update my profile to see what happens. But I never had to do that in the end.

Hope that helps. This whole recruitment process is still a mystery to me!

Well, I applied to CAE and got an email asking for CV,
I sent the CV as requested, one week after I got an email stating that CV was sent to Airline and they will call me in days written in the email.

Well never heard the phone ringing during those days, phone was on always free and working, I also asked my girlfriend to call me to check if international calls were working.
I waited until last day and I never got a call.
A guy I know was in same situation, so he sent the email saying that he was waiting for a call and they called 5 mins after.
I sent an email like this guy and nothing, I sent 3 more and no answers at all.:ouch:
Few days after got a rejected application, not stating why.

anybody experienced something similar or has ANY advice about what to do now ?
Please PM or answer in the forum, anything can be helpful.

I made another account and cancelled the old to try again, but I don't know what to write if is my first time applying or not ?
Because as many says they accept only first time application.

thanks

Good boy please be little bit open mind: The option which I put here is a cheap ption compared to Virtual Aviation if Time Permits as denoted from Speed_alive_rotate.

Then as you know still cheaper with flight included (see RYR prices) and why you need an hotel?? you need to do a couple of hours otherwise good boy if you need more than that I suggest you to re-take your 737 TR

I use to renew the 737(LPC) ...flight to....seat in Sim (4hours) night time as soon as I land there and flight back in the morning...sometimes with no hotel at all...

Any idea how much of my knowledge from a proper 737 will be transferrable onto this concoction? I did my MCC on a pretty accurate 737NG sim.

Hello everybody. In september i'm starting my integrated atpl course and I would like to have a list of things to have into account if I want to have in the future a ryanair assessment.

For what i've been reading, i should pass all courses at first try, have a good % rate and be under 30.

Is there anything else? Thank you, and good luck to the ones that have the assessment!

flyfly4
16th Apr 2015, 08:55
Thank you for your answer Redbull. Yesterday I spent a long time reading posts whether to do the MCC in a 737 or in another sim and a few were saying that if you do it in a B737 they might ask you harder questions about the 737 in the assessment, and that the point of the MCC is to learn a good CRM, not about the B737 itself.

Regarding the JOC, is it a necessary step to do for a Ryanair assessment?
Do you need to study as much as possible the B738 for the assessment, for technical questions?

My integrated course includes a MCC in a King Air B200, so I would already have the MCC but not the JOC.

Thanks!!

Want to ask you something for my personal curiosity and for the others as well...
But, If you are not 737 type rated and never flow a 737 nor in MCC, how could someone expect you answer to this:

wing description
- Limits (altitude, weight, thrust, diff pressure)
- engine questions (name, stages, ratio....)
- electrical system
- Fuel system
- 737 vs 320

Last question then is really funny , cause is suppose that you know the A320 as well...so if you have both rating , it will be fine!

Good to know that they didn't ask you What is the PTU and so on.....
So are you telling to the other people that is better to run the 737CBT ..lol...before even go in the TR courses to pass the Interview??

theiceman747

You have to know the basic information you are going to fly for them...

A lot of the info can be found in the internet, smartcockpit, manuals, etc.

examplle: Sweepback angle of the 737 wing?: 25º... why? because of aerodynamic reasons i would anwser..

I don't think they expect you to know the 737 100% (unless you are type rated) but the basic info yes. You have plenty of info about the 737 on the web, and if you book some hours on a sim to practice for the interview the place you go they surely will give you a lot of info you have to know for the interview about the 737. :ok:

have fun.

Seems reasonable to me to look for general information about the aircraft you'd like to work on for them.Maybe you're correct and maybe you're not...so a guy want to work on his fisrt jet aircraft have to know this?..so what's the difference between a type rated guy, just the practice and experience on the Simulator??:=
Sorry but for me is not reasonable!

Look even the other pink low cost using the A320...they are not going to ask you A320 related questions!!

Some question are pretty straight forward from our ATPL books and they are ok, general question..but
sure not ask you an electrical system of the 737 or the limits...
This are AFM Limitations and Boeing recommended operating limitations related questions suitable for type rated guys.
Just my thought!

:)I think to have more or less some years of experience in Airlines interview and this won't be a debate btw me and you, but I would like you to understand that this is not standard to know some deep information.

type of wing the 737
That's ok, as I wrote above, some general information is good to know and extrapolate from our Atpl studies but, again, 737 electrical system, 737 Fuel system and some related AFM& Boeing manuals informations are far away to be fair questions to ask for.

Cathay Pacific is another story and they will send you a Booklet where to find and prepare for it!

I can list here lot of EU 737 companies that recruit B737NTR guys and never had a related question on B737, or at least some very simple and not System question.
So please don't tell me that this is a normal/standard Interview Questions.

a pilot, rated or not, that can't tell what type of wing the 737 or any other liner has just by looking at a picture is not a good pilot IMHO.

I can tell you that not all experience Pilot knows every type of aircraft by looking at it sometimes.
A good Pilot is there to fly the type related aircraft in which he is rated not to look at the parking and know every type of aircaft parked!
Is a nonsense, but mslty of the non-pilots but Aviation sympathizer know more about that!

And besides that, so in your opinion, all the CPL guys looking for their first jet experience and sending thousand of Cv to thousand of Companies with Thousand of Aircrafts type first they have to open Wikepidia and memorize all the information about Aircraft types!

I can agree that sometimes , the more you know better is the impression you give to the recruiter but still not fair in my opinion.
Have good night

flyfly4; No, JOC is not needed. 2 friends of mine got the job without it. I guess it might help you to get chosen for the interview maybe.

JQKA; No, I am not type rated on the 737. Starting my course in May. Still, I think their questions is fair. They don`t expect you to know all details, but again, they can see how much homework you did before the interview by asking them!(I learned basic facts about RYR before going).
As far as I am concerned, all the questions except the limitations is basic atpl questions. Electrical question.. Well, they might ask about THE 737 system, but in reality they just want to see how you respond to something you might not know. Tell them that you never studied it, but you know that jets generally has 115/200volt AC, 400hz system, 2 engine driven generators, apu and some backup battery.. Yeah sure, you can mention the TRU`s, inverters and so on, but that is just "bonus points".
The 737 vs A320 question might not be a text book questions, but still within the fair limits I would say. Use your head and think about the different philosophy between Boeing and Airbus. All pilots should know this.. Its not like asking about Cessna vs Piper.. Boeing gives the pilot more control, Airbus is all about computers. Fly by wire is the word they want to hear, and again, its in the atpl books..

If you really want a job, prepare for the interview(I spent 2 weeks with a lot of studying, wikipedia, and also flying in a 737 sim). They can ask you anything. I would have done the same if I were them. You want to hire someone that is dedicated.
