You've got a gap in there mate; you have the technology, scan it and add it!

N.B. Wiki says "AEG J.II differed from the earlier J.I in having horn-balanced tail control surfaces" so the shape was different and was going to be a clue if needed. Also, being an "airliner", it was post-war.

Lightning Mate

Snow bound at home?!

Maybe tomorrow! No email and dodgy power here at work, so just waiting for worst of snow to ease. Just off home now before the temerature drops again and I get stuck here.

Will be working 'till Thursday, weather permitting, main roads are fine but the trouble is that it's pretty hilly around here and even FWD Tractors can't get up some of the back roads I use.

Seems like a good time to make a dash for home!

Seeya soon with luck

Funny. In German the word for this kind of weather is Unwetter, literally something like not-a-weather or a dis-weather.

The news tell that police has been called to calm down people at Frankfurt airport. Not really because Frankfurt is closed but because nobody can predict when Heathrow is open. See: nothing wrong with us. It's they all the time.

Better stick to silhouettes and let the real world go by.

Sorry, got carried away. Yes it is Mitsubishi B1M1b, connection to Handley Page is a British designer.

Graeme has declared an Open House, unless the thread wishes to hibernate the European winter day, which sounds like a viable alternative. I need not to look out of the window, just TV weatherman makes me shiver. And this time not because of his sponsored outfit.

Thre russian text says that the pilot and the observer sat "рядом" which according to the dictionary means

next
beside
nearby
alongside
by
side by side
next door
next door to
abreast
adjacently
hard by
nigh
about
at one's elbow

My reading is side-by-side. Maybe the other one is just frozen stiff. In that case, my sympathy is solely on his side.

Great clue mate. :ok:

Comms check good.

RegDep
20th Dec 2010, 18:34
Mechta,

The Nooooo-o was not empathic but sympathetic-hesitant.

Take a wing from Dewoitine D.9, an engine meant for Ansaldo AC.3, borrow some drawings from Ansaldo, paint new colours to the tail, and you get.......

Mechta
20th Dec 2010, 18:45
So its got a Bristol Jupiter engine clone (and there are plenty of those), and could have been built by an Ansaldo or Dewoitine customer who took it a bit further. I was thinking Japanese, but didn't find anything. Could the blue be the colours on the tail? Swedish perhaps?

RegDep
20th Dec 2010, 18:51
Blue is a red herring. Herring is a red herring, too.

Mechta
20th Dec 2010, 19:22
Tupolev ANT-5 or I-4 ?

SincoTC
20th Dec 2010, 20:00
Guten Abend Reg,

Is it a Comte AC-1 with Swiss markings on the tail? Just like my pen-knife, but without the tools!

If correct, then please declare Open House as I have no challenges left!

Noyade
20th Dec 2010, 20:35
With a tail like that they should have called it the Comte AC-1 Shark.

http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/474/ac1u.jpg (http://img843.imageshack.us/i/ac1u.jpg/)

RegDep
20th Dec 2010, 20:37
Yes, Sinco. it is Comte Ac-1.

The prototype was later fitted with a Dewoitine D.9 wing, it had the same engine as Ansaldo AC.3, which it was almost a spitting image of, and it was Swiss. Comte AC-1 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comte_AC-1)

http://i1103.photobucket.com/albums/g472/RegDep/comte-ac-1.jpg

Only one built, because Swiss Air Force wanted another Dewoitine :*.

Open House as Sinco had requested.

Edit to say that Graeme has crawled out of his bed and come up with the red tail with white cross (no herring), the same individual as in Wiki.

Good Morning, Graeme

RegDep
20th Dec 2010, 21:35
The weather is utterly relative. Last week I was out in -25 °C and it was just convenient nice winter weather. And the sun was even out for 4 hours (no clouds). Remember when we had six weeks under -28°C. Russians shot a "cruising missile" that strayed (without warhead) and went to a lake. Military fished it up. It was some -38°C when they did that.

I just saw a story on BBC website. They wondered why it is that Helsinki (EFHE) has been closed for snow last time in 2003, and then for 30 minutes. The spokeswoman in Helsinki said that she can imagine that is might be more difficult in Heathrow. I'd say relatively much more difficult....

BTW it is not Germany I am talking about.

When you prepare freeze-dried reindeer meat, you have to wait until spring (March-April) to get freezing temperatures at night and a bit below zero at day to get the water to evaporate. Nobel-prize folks these nomads.

Nope. Sorry.

Going from memory now...made in 1950 but released in 1957.
This was the last powered flight of the X-1...and they added it to the movie script.

The actor meant to be in the X-1 is more famous for being in the saddle.

The Russian "Yak" is moments away from shooting down the Russian "Mig".

Very interesting; issa 1911 Sikorsky S-6 ??

At home today, dug the car out but to no avail, a milk float has skidded into the Pub on the curve at the bottom of the slight hill in my road and blocked us all in as the other end of the road only goes up onto the moors. Good afternoon skytrain,

I hope you're not suffering the weather too badly!

It is indeed a Boisavia Mercurey, I have it down as a B.60 (the three prototypes), but as that cannot be identified from the silhouette I accept your answer as correct and you have control :D

Hi Sinco....thanks for that. Sorry not been around lately - just busy with work with the lead up to Christmas.

Weather here has been lovely - very cold, very clear and hardly any snow. In fact today is the very first day that we may get a significant snowfall! Sadly my trips of late have suffered and I seem to have spent more time in airport lounges than flying. Oh well.

Bear with me and I'll see if I can come up with a challenge.

I used to get it through work, but I agree its no longer the publication it was, and probably serves the industry more as a job search than anything else! In my mind Air International or Aviation News are far better and much more informative.

Agreed.

When I was a director of an aviation company we gave up advertising with F.I. because of the ripoff charges.

Sorry for the delay!

Just done a bit of rapid homework and realise that the way it looks is the way it is! You are looking at the front end from above, it's not Hotol and not a cruise missile, but it is from a well established company and the prototypes flew in the 1990's.

Yes, there was more than a single prototype, don't know how many but two were left when the project was dropped.

It was described as a UAV and sometimes as a UCAV. What isn't too clear from the silhouette is that there are two rounded sensor housings, at the "point" and above the nose, in plan view it is symmetrical.

Probably not a good choice mate...spur of the moment thing.

It's actually very small and ship launched.

Thats a new one on me - never realised we had such a thing! Well, googled it, came up with nothing, so going to close down now.

Good morning TC - yes I had, in fact a long time before that. Full of painkillers again.

Have a look at Mel's photo of the Stooge....just below the end of the Swallow motors.

What is that in the background? A GAL glider?

Graeme,

Since you seem to have aversion to green, what colours do you like? :E

The caption for my photo tells the reader it was taken (probably) at Aberporth.

Nice area?

Things are going to be very quiet around here I suspect with Christmas rapidly approaching.

You going anywhere on your two week break?

Lightning Mate

Aberporth?

Not a nice area in my opinion. It's on the west coast of the Llyn Peninsula, West Wales.

They used to operate Jindiviks from there, for the benefit of Lightning squadrons based at RAF Valley on Missile Practice Camp detachments.

Wanna some more?

edit: not going anywhere mate. It is wise to stay close to the hospital at the moment.

It is wise to stay close to the hospital at the moment.Sorry to hear that. Sounds like a wise plan then.
I'm only off work until Boxing Day. Will be away tomorrow and Christmas Day.

Gotta be honest, not the slightest interest in Christmas this year. I'm the ultimate Scrooge.

Then times might be lean on thread. Let's hope some are around.

I hope TC will be, because he has just sent me four images to silhouette.

You're not alone.
