Lightning Mate
27th Aug 2010, 09:35
Kawasaki P-1?

skytrain10
27th Aug 2010, 09:43
Lasted longer than I thought it would!

I would have accepted XP-1 or P-X, as well as P-1 (which is the production model, although strictly speaking the silhouette was of the prototype)

On that basis I feel I should award it to RR who came up with P-X before LM came up with P-1.

http://i551.photobucket.com/albums/ii457/kendyer/Silhouette%20Challenge/KawasakiXP-1.jpg

Correction to above, as RR edited his post to reflect P-X just as LM identified it as the P-1.

So with RR's agreement, LM has control as P-1 was one of the identies I would accept.

Ridge Runner
27th Aug 2010, 09:47
A close run thing. In fairness I think David posted just as I edited my post. Please re-think and decide. My initial answer was "P-8", which was wrong, and then modded to "P-X"

RR

Ah, ok, I couldn't see that you had edited your post.

In that case, if you're happy with it, I'll hand control over to LM. So David, its all yours mate.

Lightning Mate
27th Aug 2010, 10:01
Thank you both.

When I posted RR had said P8. If you edit within ten minutes it is not reflected as such.

Here's an interesting project:

SincoTC

It is indeed the Patchen Explorer!

An american homebuilt one-off by Marvin Patchen, Ramona CA.

I will post some info and the African connection soon!

skytrain has Control :D

skytrain10
27th Aug 2010, 11:25
Thanks for the picture link RegDep. I didn't really have much time to look..having given it away by saying Thurston Teal I thought I had better jump in quickly with the Patchen Explorer...the description seemed spot on.

Will wait to see what Sinco says.

About time we had a helicopter:

Lightning Mate

Aeris Naviter?

Or maybe AN-2 ENARA

SincoTC
27th Aug 2010, 11:42
Thanks for the clarification RegDep, I had assumed from the timings (and the lack of any question marks) that you were responding to skytrain's remark about trying to find a photo of the Patchen Explorer, as that's the only aircraft image that Goggle presents!

More info on that one:

David Thurston who designed and devolped the Thurston Teal, also designed a landplane version designated TSC-2 Explorer, in conjunction with an aviation magazine and Marvin Patchen Inc, which financed this development and acquired the production rights for this aircraft, planning to build civil and law-enforcement versions as the Explorer and Observer respectively.

Subsequently, Dr Maitland Reed’s National Dynamics (Pty) Ltd of Durban, South Africa, acquired this project from Patchen, but later decided not to build either version of this aircraft.

The sole Patchen Explorer, is still alive and well, operated by the South African Air Force Museum. The prototype was shipped to the Republic of South Africa and evaluated by the SAAF's test flight and development centre for use as a light recon forward air control aircraft, but was not quite what was required. As a result it languished in a hangar for many years before being donated to the SAAF Museum.

Comments by Display pilot — James R Feuilherade 11/15/00. Why only one prototype was ever built I do not know, as it is a great little aircraft with a fantastic helicopter-type view from the cockpit. I will admit that it does not have the greatest control harmony (sensitive rudder and elevator, heavy ailerons), but it goes well with a 200hp Lycoming and variable-pitch prop. I served with the SAAF Museum during 1999 as a display pilot and flew the Patchen at many airshows. It looks so weird that it attracts far more interest at airshows than many of the vintage aircraft!

skytrain10
27th Aug 2010, 11:44
They're going thick and fast today....yes its the Aeris Naviter AN-2 helicopter from Spain.

skytrain10
27th Aug 2010, 13:23
Interesting. Clearly a museum exhibit although the light aircraft in the background doesn't seem to belong....or does it?

Would this be an American machine?

Lightning Mate
27th Aug 2010, 13:29
Ah, a response.

Not American I'm afraid. The aeroplane in the background might belong, but I don't honestly know. I'll have a look for you.

Lightning Mate
27th Aug 2010, 13:32
There are aircraft there from several parts of the world, so it's probable that the background aircraft is not at all connected with the challenge.

RegDep
27th Aug 2010, 13:49
Just a newbie's question: Why would the tail not give it away?

Lightning Mate
27th Aug 2010, 13:55
It might well do, but what would you enter in search?

RegDep
27th Aug 2010, 13:59
No idea. Just asking. Thought the oldies would be able to restrict the search to relatively early years and this tail might point to some direction.....

skytrain10
27th Aug 2010, 13:59
The tail is quite unusal as RegDep implies, but I don't recognise it, but there is something familiar about the aircraft. Time for some more fishing....French possibly?

Lightning Mate
27th Aug 2010, 14:06
fisshy fisshy but not Ffrench.

....and oi Reg, you're not a newbie anymore. Get yourself a Photobucket or Imageshack account and get posting!

skytrain10
27th Aug 2010, 14:14
So it must be Russian then.....

Lightning Mate
27th Aug 2010, 14:18
Niet Russian...........

RegDep
27th Aug 2010, 14:18
Re: familiarity, I first thought it could be Blackburn Ribbon (not having seen the Ribbon tail yet) and thinking that the small aircraft in the background (and the general outlook of the museum) would imply Finland where the only Ribbon II F left is (and the small one would be PIK-23). All wrong. The Ribbon has not been restored, PIK-23 is not in the museum (and has different L/G). And the tail, of course is different. So: Square one, hop-hop!

Lightning Mate
27th Aug 2010, 14:22
Square one it looks like.

It's not actually my motor. Just an image of exactly the same vehicle, because the photo of mine is somewhere on a portable hard drive which I can't locate.

Anyway its the Laird Baby Biplane....at least I hope it is!

The Sportster does have a fairly unique feature in that it can covert from open to closed cockpit, and from a two seater to a single seater:

It looks very similar to the UTVA-65 Privrednik, save for the cabin. A variant maybe?

Now I've found a photo of one with an all glass cab, so I'll say it is the UTVA-65!

Up something sleeve got skytrain........??

I do as it happens. Not counting my chickens yet, but I'm pretty happy with the UTVA-65. The 3-view matches that in Observers perfectly, save for the cockpit. The only description I've found of the -67 (bear in mind it wasn't actually built) says its got a larger hopper and a "redesigned fuselage", which would imply that the 3-view would not match.

We'll wait for WK, but in the meantime I'm back in the garden. Will check-in later.

Lightning Mate
29th Aug 2010, 15:41
Well, I'm with you that's for sure.

RegDep

Skytrain, just out of technical curiosity: You say 67 was never built, some text mention it was first flown 1967. Given that this mentioning seems to be circulating without proper reference, and no pictures so far found, where do you get that it was never built?

Reg

Lightning Mate
29th Aug 2010, 16:29
If I may:

A later variant of the Utva 65, the Utva 67 first flown in 1967 was similar but had the eight cylinder 400 hp (298 kW) Lycoming IO-720-A1A (http://wapedia.mobi/en/Lycoming_IO-720) and a revised fuselage of greater capacity. Its top speed was 295 km/h (184 mph).

:)

RegDep
29th Aug 2010, 16:32
Exactly that. So, how to fly one if not built?

Or maybe it's my English (or lack thereof) and (bear in mind it wasn't actually built) means something else than I know :O.

Edit: OK, I plead no contest!

Hi RegDep, indeed Robert Denize`s Raid Driver. :D
Based on the Emeraude, but stretched fuselage and more glass in cockpit area. The first one was Denize`s own RD-105 and at least 2 further a/c, also in France, as RD-105. Then there is an RD-20/150 of 1989 also named Raid Driver, but could not yet figure out reason for different designation. One aircraft (registered I-VIDB) built in Italy.

Good morning LM, evening Graeme,

Thanks for looking after the shop David, I hope it wasn't too boring as contestants seemed to have been a bit sparse!

Congratulations Graeme on getting the Gull; I'm not surprised really, because when I was compiling the data, I saw the title of the book where the quote below was taken from and I thought to myself, there's a volume that's bound to be on the Wizard of Oz's shelves!

The Gull was Designed by Leonard Warden Bonney who learned to fly with Orville Wright in 1910, it was built by Kirkham Motor Co, Flushing NY.

Extract from "The World's Worst Aircraft", Jim Winchester 2005

Despite 25 years of evidence to the contrary, American pilot and inventor Leonard Warden Bonney believed the secret to manned flight was to emulate the birds as closely as possible. To this end he kept and studied seagulls and devised an aircraft on avian principles. The Bonney Gull emerged in late 1927 and was unlike anything before or since. The wings, which really can be described as gull-like, did everything except actually flap, incorporating variable incidence, variable dihedral, and variable sweep of the outer sections. After four years' work and considerable testing in wind tunnels and on the ground, and despite the protest of friends and observers, Bonney took off in the Gull on 4 May 1928. The Gull wobbled, fishtailed and plunged into the ground, killing Bonney and ending his dream of flying like the birds.

Here's a rather sad little video clip showing the all too short maiden flight:

YouTube - The Bonney Gull (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97Udr_1FkiI)

Off to work now, so have a good morning guys, seeya coffee time if possible. Edited to say email recieved, thanks LM, will action ASAP.
