Unfortunately I'm plagued by slow internet today - can't use the search facility on Aerofiles (or rather I can, but I'll have time to make a cuppa in between each page loading up :)) so I'm limited on where I can look! Clue's to limit my search are therefore welcome!!

Good evening one11,

I think the engine may be a Menasco and wonder if it's a Swallow C Coupe ?

I have found a photo on Aerofiles, it's taken from a slightly different angle, but it seems to fit fairly well.

Please declare Open House if correct, as I have to be off in a few minutes and haven't had time to get the answer/clues together for my next one fo send to LM. It looks as if I've missed a couple of interesting days!!

The reason I said that is that the Vigilante is usually shown with rocket pods under the wings. The NEDS (which is essentially the same aircraft) doesn't have them!

I'm here - just been sorting out my books - and seeing if I can find some new challenges! Now need to make sure they're all on the web :)

must have sent people scurrying to Fairchild? me included, but the undercarriage was all wrong. Internet's been slow all day today, so there was no way I was going to spend hours going through Aerofiles.

Mate, I couldn't identify a cockpit or an aerodrome if my life depended on it. But I have a lot of cockpit photos (books/magazines..and I'm sure you do to) and just thought I could contribute.
I have no idea how you work out what an aircraft is from a set of dials! When the cockpit windows/frames have been in view it helps a bit, but even so how these guys work them out is beyond me! It was only your clue that made it easy.

Years ago I used to do all the nav chart updates for aircraft so I used to get to recognise some airport layouts. And if you have a few clues and know roughly where to look you can always use google earth to look at airfields.

Hmmm...what happened to the other guy? Not sure who else was involved - probably went on to be President or something! Incidentally the person concerned died in the late 1990's.

Incidentally I was thinking about Graeme's idea for the Noyade 500 - a silhouette of an aircraft with a production run of 500 or more and a contest which has to last 500 mins or more. Quite like the concept actually although it could be a tough one to fulfill! Guess its a case of finding a view from an unusual angle - I may give it a go :)

Lightning Mate
2nd Nov 2010, 14:26
So if it is identified in less than 500 minutes then who has control - the original poster again?

skytrain10
2nd Nov 2010, 14:31
So if it is identified in less than 500 minutes then who has control - the original poster again?
No, I've assumed its exactly how we play today, save that if it passes the 500 mins then the poster claims the Noyade 500 prize (whatever that may be) and has the right to post again.
If it goes before the time is up then whoever gets it wins and posts their challenge.

In fairness nothing changes save that the poster can claim the prize if their image survives 500 mins and they can demonstrate that more than 500 aircraft were produced.

Anyway I was just thinking about it as I have a quiet afternoon!:)

Lightning Mate
2nd Nov 2010, 14:35
Understood.

Noyade 500 prize

Don't worry, this one does not fall into the 500+ production run!

What would that be I wonder.......
Probably the prize is you get to keep control! When Graeme wakes up he can suggest one.

A bit of fair warning boys - I'm out all day tomorrow and so this needs to be guessed by 0800 UK time in the morning (9 hours from now for the antipodians!)

Its a little obscure but it is on the web from more than one source. One was built, plus two replicas.

RR

skytrain10
3rd Nov 2010, 00:59
This one's been bugging me for the last 30 mins, but time to close for the night. Difficult to ascertain its appearance but it seems to have a bulbous area around the cockpit! Keep thinking of Luton Minors, Heath Parasols, Pietenpol Aircampers and the like, but they were all produced in big numbers. The fact that only 1 was built and yet 2 replicas were made presumably means this aircraft must have been important in its time.

Over to the night shift....I see you out there evansb....don't know if Noyade is around.

Your last was the Woomera (wish I had of seen that one) so maybe another from Oz? Doesn't have a lot of similarities but only one built, although no mention of replicas or why you would even want to.

The shirtless youth with the Adidas runners looks very cultured so most likely Australian and I'm sure he's practising an old Aussie tradition, "how close can I put my face to a spinning prop?" or "is this going to hurt?"

The Amsco Parasol Monoplane..?

But!.....should the EXACT image be 'findable' on the net? And should we ask for clues and should it run concurrently with our normal challenges (too complicated?)?Exact image on the net - no. Providing the aircraft is on the net, and I doubt there are any with a production run of over 500 that aren't anyway.

Concurrently - no. It would be too confusing

Clues - I was wondering about that. I think you have to either:
- declare at the start of the challenge that this a potential Noyade 500 challenge and therefore there are no clues
- dont't declare its a Noyade 500, and treat as a normal challenge.
I think its up to the person setting the challenge as to what they want to do.

Finally we have to bear in mind time zones. Graeme could easily set one at 2300 UTC and win at 0720 UTC because we've all been to sleep! I think an element of common sense would have to be used.

In 1948 the first powered aircraft was designed and built by Wiweko Soepono, the WEL-1 (Wiweko Experimental Lightplane). Driven by a second-hand 750 cc Harley Davidson motorcycle engine it flew the first time on October 27, 1948. In 1981 Wiweko built two flying replica’s powered by a VW Revmaster; one is at the Yogyakarta aviation museum, the other at the Satrya aviation museum.

TsKB is the Central Design Bureau, and various manufacturers built TsKB designsCertainly in the Osprey tone (which I would regard as the most reliable source) its listed as Grigorovich although it is referred to under Polikarpov. Could be American cities...? :suspect:

Lightning Mate

Tried that - all I get is modern airliners named after cities!

Back to Aerofiles......

Aerofiles......And searching for what precisely?

"Rare phucker (2 built) with American sounding name and flown in 1989"...?

No Plan B.

Morning all,

Coffee time, and a quick search,

I now see the logic behind Ken's clues; The company is from Alaska, the A/c name is the Prospector (oil or gold).

As unlikely as it seems and I passed it over before work because of it, it's a mid-wing STOL

The Keller FK-1 STOL Prospector

Keller FK-1 STOL Prospector, N4XK, Private (http://www.abpic.co.uk/photo/1153916/)

Edited to say that I'll keep my light on and an eye open from time to time; did you recieve the images I sent the other evening LM, any order will do, but ascending order if possible!

Good morning Trevor.

Just how did you find that????

We've been running around in circles.....:\

did you recieve the images I sent the other evening LM, any order will do, but ascending order if possible!

No mate - didn't look last night.

Send one here to work ASAP and I'll move.

All received. Working on the first number. :ok:

Good morning David,

Images sent, thank you.

I found it by the use of SST (superior search technology) :p

Actually, I went through most of the likely candidates before work, so I revised what I was looking for in the light of Ken's clues that arrived later, namely the year and that it hadn't got an image, so I was able to skip most and look for the unlikely and something that fitted the State criteria, = bull**** baffles brains technology!

That's exactly what I was doing - got to H.

Good research Sinco :ok:. Yes its the Keller FK-1 Prospector STOL. I've identified at least 2 aircraft that were built, of which N5XK crashed, and N4XK remains, and is pictured on the web. Its described as a "bush plane" in some souces - doesn't quite fit the image in my book!

For some reason the tail doesn't seem to go with the aircraft....American...late 20's?

TC, note that something has magically vanished. ;)

First thing I noteced mate, poor little sod!! I had considered doing just that, but not with MS Paint :ugh: you made a good job of it though :D

American...late 20's?

Too early and wrong continent!

To help interpret the tail's silhouette; what appears to be a fillet to the fin, is in fact the tail's horizontal surface behind the fin, also, there may just be a small radius to the top rear corner of the rudder, but on my image it was almost exactly the colour/texture of the background. LM probably had a better view of the real shape, but I don't think it's too relevant as there aren't many other pictures around, but this one is on the web!

Good - I think! Thanks for the comments on the tail....that would explain it.
MS Paint....thats what I do all my silhouettes with!

Lightning Mate

To clarify things, the shape of the fin/rudder is accurate.

Thanks LM,

I was pretty sure it would be!

I'm just looking into your query on 029, that's the only photo I can find so far, will email you later on what to do!

Now going through France

You got one of those fruity little mobile devices, like wot Martin's got then?? :)

Seriously though, that's a good move!
