Ukraine is an incredibly ugly war and getting more so, as civil wars usually do. Look up the Spanish civil war, very similarly to Ukraine a testing ground for new weapons,, you will get a glimpse.

Go and read the Geneva Convention on the treatment of POWs and you will see the difference.

U.S. revealed that Russia has 18 filtration camps in Ukraine where executions have taken place.

These locations--sites of executions and forced deportations--are much more sinister than simple "filtration camps." Maybe we should use an appropriate term instead of something that sounds rather innocuous.

(… Concentration camps - though perhaps gulags is also appropriate)

There are apparently a number of companies of foreign fighters/mercs who are over in Ukraine and getting involved in the fight. I doubt it will take you long to google up a recruiting pitch. You can probably follow this guy on Twitter, maybe even send him a twittytweet, if you'd really like to help out.

ORAC: I think your estimate of 'gulag' is on the money.
There's a New York Times story worth a look, to include the interview here.
Hope it does not end up behind a paywall.

My ex-MiL spent 2 years in a Soviet Gulag after her and her family were loaded onto cattle trucks in Lviv in late 1939......

Not all her family made it to the Gulag......she tearfully recorded her experiences onto tape about 30 years ago, for posterity and for future generation of Poles. It wasn't nice to listen to.
Glad she didn't live to see what is happening out there all over again. She detested the Russians.

I think it's the realization that Russia/Putin cannot be trusted. They want to be ready to smack Putin hard should he have further ambitions. Pity that the UK hasn't woken up to that. The west needs to arm itself to the teeth, hopefully as nothing more than a strong deterrent.

The 93rd Brigade of Ukraine showed the use of a very interesting cheap commercial drone converted to kamikaze role. Such drones carry a very small payload and are used mostly against personnel.

Note that the operator is receiving video output via special FPV goggles.

Civil war???
Since when are civil wars fought out with Arty and Cruise Missiles?
Why do you defend such thugs carrying out such inhumane and unbelievable acts?

The only thing which really puzzles me is the rational of the Russian command letting this happen. It will do them no good. At all.
It will a) push sentiment in Western societies towards more military support for Ukraine. Another 100 HIMARS/MLRS/CAESAR/PzH2000 and the Russian troops would be in for a sh*tty autumn.
b) motivate Ukrainian soldiers never to surrender and to fight 'til the last round.

Does the Russian leadership [whatever that is] actually believe the lies that they push out?

If so, that may be even more dangerous than deliberately lying.

Collective self-delusion within a bubble, lacking reference to external truths, is halfway to madness.

Let's see them get out of this one... And rightly so, both are not fit for purpose.

Reuters) - Ukraine's security agencies on Friday demanded the United Nations and Red Cross immediately react to killing of prisoners of war in a Russian-held jail, noting the two bodies had given guarantees the detainees would be well treated. In a joint statement issued after a meeting called by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the agencies said the U.N. and Red Cross should send investigative teams to probe the deaths.

The rest of Europe has fairly graphic evidence as to the merit of any word or treaty with the Russians, so having preparation is not a bad idea at all. The UF are also providing quite detailed knowledge of the RuF "strengths" and "weaknesses", which is invaluable insight; the analysts will be busy for some time amending their manuals.

The Russian disinterst in international norms or honour was highlighted in the recent much touted agreement on grain, which Russia honored for almost 24 hours before showing it's true intent to deceive.

Ukraine has given a lot of pointers on force multipliers, and perhaps they will develop a new cottage industry for export to other countries. (Lord knows it would be hard for them to build anything worse than Russia's "frontline" weapon systems). Russia may consider using box cutters for their intended purpose other than war crimes, but that would go against over a thousand years of disregard.

Google

Russian War crimes: About 118,000,000 results (0.52 seconds)
Russian acts of valor: About 6,710,000 results (0.53 seconds)
Russian Adherence to Geneva Convention: About 1,220,000 results (0.56 seconds)
Russian Breach of International Law: About 13,900,000 results (0.41 seconds)
Russian violation of international law: About 28,800,000 results (0.54 seconds)
Russia fails to keep its promise: About 64,700,000 results (0.49 seconds)

There have been some great Russians, but those with any moral fortitude seem to be absent from the halls of power, and the general public seem to be quite fine with that.

One interpretation is that disregard for any rules of war reinforces the impression that Russian morale is extremely low. Venting frustration by horrendously mistreating defenceless prisoners is a clear sign of this. It also indicates that commanders are having great difficulty controlling their troops. It shows what can be expected if the Russian invasion is allowed to succeed and the importance of continued support for the Ukraine.

Poland is complaining to Germany that some of the seven PzH 2000 they delivered to Ukraine are out of action after just one month. Germany regards 100 shots per day as very intensive usage and the Ukrainians have been firing much more than that, as well as trying to fire extreme range with special shells. Spare parts are being dispatched asap.

When you have your foot on the enemies neck, its time to press down hard.

It would seem the Wagner group are conducting atrocities behind the lines. A leader of moral fortitude should call them for what they are, a terrorist group.
As such the removal of their units in Africa would be a good start by some SF units.
No trace should be left as if they have run off into the night, bar the blood and bullet holes.
It is fast approaching the time where the West needs to start showing its teeth, before the dictators get the upper hand and its too late.
We are sleep walking into massive individual global conflicts.

Exactly as I said Monkey. I am absolutely certain that my children, if they survive, will see their days out in a dystopian nuclear wasteland. I know I will get ridiculed for that but whatever l. I really do believe a Nuclear war is absolutely inevitable.

But we need all that oil and gas not to mention titanium and all the other stuff..... Fine words and speeches about net zero are fine for the punters but in the real world that's all far too complicated and expensive.....

it's a design flaw, the projective moves backward/down and compresses the charge which over pressures the chamber leading to cracking.
Germans were aware of it for some time.
