Summer 2011

Based on several rumours from various sources - it seems that BOH will/could be handling about 2.25m pax in 2011:

Rumoured based operators

2 bmibaby B737-300/500
3 Ryanair B737-800 (1 additional)
1 Palmair B737-500
1 Thomson Airways B737-800
1 easyJet A319

Rumoured new scheduled airlines to operate:

KLM: Amsterdam Fokker F-70 3 x daily
Air Southwest/Eastern Airways Alliance: NQY-BOH-EDI, BHD-BOH-NQY-ORK
Monarch airlines: AGP-BOH-AGP
Aer Lingus: DUB-BOH-DUB (with connections to Aer Lingus New York)

Don't forget Flybe in that list. If the Manchester route works then they could easily base 1 or 2 Dash 8 and operate domestic routes and this would hinder any attempt by Air Southwest and the like.

My understanding is that the Air Navigation Service Provider, NATS Southampton, changed their policy for provision of service outside controlled airspace, preventing the routine leaving of it, as used to happen. Controllers now have to keep aircraft within controlled airspace, requiring that inbounds from the north have to stay at or above FL70 until 12 DME SAM.

Does anyone think they will move the 4X per week summer flights to Cork to BOH from SOU as well as they may start daily flights to Dublin?

what a complete shambles Bournemouth really is.....

I really hope someone who has something "to do" with BOH reads this....
I have been flying in / out of Bournemouth for 25 years and this morning returned from Innsbruck..
Now ,I know they have some building work going on..... but...
They really never will survive as a regional airport if :

As the only scheduled service present at the time....

1. It took 50 minutes to get through passport control
2. There are no toilets until you have got through PC
3. Another 50 minutes to get bags from the carousel
4. Car park barrier broken and unable to get out of the Car Park for 35 minutes
5. Nobody helpfull - everybody rude

PATHETIC !!!!

Left the car park 2 hours after landing !!

A few pointers

1) Airport doesn't control number of immigration staff
2) If you hadn't been so long in passport control it wouldn't have been an issue
3) 50 minutes to get bags to carousel. Who employs the handling staff is it the airport or is there a handling agent at Bournemouth? If it's the handling agent then the airport can only express it's dissapointment in the service provided.
4) Car park barrier broken. Once again is this facility operated by airport or third party? If third party is running the car park then same as above the airport can't really do anything about it.
5) Nobody helpful everybody rude. - Manners doesn't cost anything but sometimes somones mood could be a result of how yourself and other passengers have reacted towards the staff. On lot of these occasions the frontline staff bare the brunt of abuse for reasons that is not in their control.

My advice is to write your view and experience to Bournemouth Airport as a passenger and maybe advise them of ways you think it could be improved.

It looks like you have experienced unfortunate combinations in lack of staffing at various departments and technical issues with the parking barriers. The staffing issue could be a result in the lack of other aircraft movement and therefore not necessary to have a full compliment of staff as it is deeemed non-profitable.

We are still in the recession when it comes to airline travel and the airline industry and all companies are in the need to save as much money as they can to stay in business.

I suspect the list above is more wishful thinking than reflecting reality.

easyJet have put an aircraft into DSA for one reason and one reason only - its deal with Peel Airports about Liverpool vs Manchester. It does not mean that there has been a sudden change of heart in the company and that it is going to start up lots of single aircraft bases. BOH might see a little bit more flying but I'd be amazed to see a based aircraft.

The real question for BOH is who will pick up the Scotland routes after Ryanair has stopped both PIK and EDI. There's only room for one, and potentially it could be easyJet (using GLA/EDI based aircraft), Flybe (same), Air Southwest (big departure from their current operations and most unlikely at a time when they look to be making big losses based on Sutton Harbour's results statements).

Aer Arann are operating their Aer Lingus routes at their own commercial risk - it is a franchise arrangement and not a wet-lease. I cannot really see RE being mad enough to take on Ryanair head-to-head on BOH-DUB. Again, wishful thinking rather than reality.

KLM - remotely possible. bmibaby - don't make me laugh.

Can we get our feet back on the ground then?

And in terms of the list of woes of using BOH airport - Mathers, it doesn't matter who is responsible and whether the airport company has no direct control over immigration, car parks etc. If customers have a bad experience using the airport, it's the airport company's problem, full stop. The "it's someone else's problem" approach to customer service is totally unacceptable when the customer sees all of these things as the airport's problem. It needs to be fixed, and the airport operator is in the best position of anyone to bang heads together from the various agencies involved to sort it out.

Do you really think Immigration will bow down to the airport and all of a sudden put on extra staff just because the airport wants it?

Don't forget in a perfect world we will have surplus of staff kicking their heels waiting for a palne or two. Wake up and smell the Coffee and be realistic if our economy was boombing and airline industry was expanding at the rate it was a few years back then you would have a fighting chance.

But when the airline industry is still in a bad way and most areas loosing a lot of money then somethings have to give way and minimum staffing levels is what is needed for these companies to stay in business.

What is the % split bewteen Lo-cost, Charter and full service at BOH?

Full service pays the most and Lo-costs pays very little if at all.

Are BOH not building a new terminal? Things maybe much better then.

Complete wishful thinking.

Aer Lingus/Aer Arann would be mad to go head to head with Ryanair on DUB-BOH. No one is more aware of this than Aer Lingus and Aer Arann. Much more likely would be a Dublin to Southampton service against Flybe. Flybe are less competition than Ryanair, and the runway at Southampton prevents direct competition from Ryanair.

Barcli;

passport control staff are independent of the airport and unfortunately the airport cannot dictate how many staff are provided.

There are no toilets until after passport / customs as customs dictate this so they cannot be used to get rid of illegal substances. the new arrivals hall will be the same, no loos until after passport control - not the airport's fault but still very frustrating

baggage staff are servisair - complain to the airport authority about the bags and they will pursue it, i've had the same ridiculous wait for bags too. However , bear in mind there have been redundancies amongst airport and servisair staff and the airport makes practically no money from airlines

car park problem and rude staff - complain to the airport managers

The UK Border Agency Customer Charter (May 2009) does state:
"At the UK Border we intend that;
95% of British, European Economic Area and Swiss passengers should wait no longer than 25 minutes"

I guess you may have been part of the unlucky 5%

I must admit I have never seen queues that long for passport control. Was there a rush on? (A rush at BOH is more than one flight departing ... per day)

Use BOH 2-3 times a year and never waited more than 15 minutes at Passport Control. I think you were unlucky. Last time i used LGW I waited 30 mins at passport control and 60 minutes for baggage.

Barcli ,

Sorry to hear about your experience ! Bournemouth is going through a massive change at the moment and i suspect staffing levels are a problem as well during the winter months with few flights and everyone running around trying to do everything

Put your thoughts down on the feedback section on the airport web site , i got a reply back from the Terminal duty manager quite quickly on a situation i experienced

Good luck !

Try Stansted at 21.00 on a sunday night , it will take 1hr 39 mins to clear customs. Its crazy wont fly from there again.

Re Innsbrook flight,

Last week flight was £80 per person cheaper to fly from Bournemouth than it was from Bristol. Take your pick
