New Air Traffic Control Tower
Rumours of a new air traffic control tower and integrated Fire Station to be erected on the North side of the airfield. This will allow for extension of the western apron & new parallel taxiway from Runway 08 direct to the terminal area. Old taxiway to be closed and new car parks to be opened.

New tower long overdue. I visited last summer, it had degenerated to something you'd expect to see in west africa. ATCO's working in very poor conditions. It was bad in the eighties and has gone downhill since. I could imagine that CAA safety group are not best pleased.
Makes sense to move tower north side and to extend the west apron north.. as ever though it will be down to money, would have thought buildings equipment and apron would add up to at least 20 million.
Can't see the budget appearing before traffic at MAG airports has revovered to 2007 levels at least. So we have a long wait yet me thinks.
....and just for fun, I predict that Flybe will slip into the EDI and prob GLA trunk routes before too long, but only 1/day and only to discourage any other robust competition appearing on the sectors to compromise the SOU hub.
...and per my earlier post, agree that Palmair the airline more likely history than trailblazer before long

tower appears pretty rough from the outside- it's due for a major clean -up this year. Inside, however, it is most definitely not a case of ATCO's working in very poor conditions. It's true enough that the structure is old but large amounts of money have been spent over the last year and the working conditions have improved dramatically. Radar room is excellent, refit of VCR is nearly complete. Given the amount of money spent you're unlikely to see any moves towards a relocation of the facility, though from an increased apron and improved taxiway point of view it would make some sense.

Why is the airport's new terminal and huge investment never mentioned in any of the industry or enthusiast magazines? Surely this is big big news and trumps most airport development work taking place in the UK in 2009/10. Southamptons 100 years of flight is featured everywhere! Frustrating...

If the rest of the new airport interior is the same as that shown in the above picture, I can't imagine the likes of the long-term supporters of BOH (i.e. Palmair) will be terribly happy. I don't suppose Ryanair pax will be any the wiser, but for the more 'refined' passenger, waiting in a space rather akin to a warehouse is unlikely to be particularly pleasant.
Assuming this picture does indeed show the true end finish, I can't believe there isn't even any decent suspended ceiling or something to hide all the air conditioning ducts. Again, I hope I am proven wrong...but as it looks, it is disappointing that so much money has been spent on the project to ignore the final finishes?!

If you click on the photo section of Bournemouth Echo and type in " airport terminal " there are about 20 photos showing the new terminal including the new walkways , restaurants, duty free shop , shops and gates all very impressive !
Yes i agree about the air conditioning ducts but there is still more work to done and the duty free shop does have a suspended ceiling so who knows

I travel a lot and just about every airport I visit has exposed air conditioning ducts and various other structural eyesores. Have you been to LHR T5? Its all exposed there.
This new terminal is light years ahead of where BOH has been and is a milestone in the airport history. Pasengers dont care what the terminal looks like. They care if they get wet walking from the car park, or to the aircraft in the rain, and if they have to wait for unreasonable time at immigration or baggage. They care if its too hot or too cold.
Lets get the service right. Passengers want to use the airport if they can to avoid the London nightmare. Good route choice is key, frequent access to a decent hub in Europe will have a profound effect.

Why such a big duty free ?
There cannot be many flights out that qualify for real duty free shopping .
For the design , it is just a modern shed no longer wood but made from ali.
These spaceframe hangers are quick cheap and easy to through up , very little maint.
And all those little 25cl ali cans have to be recycled somehow.

No banners, advertising sites
Notably absent seem to be advertising/banners in the terminal pictures. Surely this would be something that would assist airport revenue? Light boxes? etc...
PLus i find it strange that everyone is beside themselves with excitement about this - BUT ITS ONLY HALF A TERMINAL. STILL NO SIGN OF ARRIVALS!
so people are departing from a great glass fronted new terminal only to arrive in a porta cabin. what !? For people flying INTO Bournemouth for the first time, the 3rd world facilities still persist. And dont tell me its because departures makes the money. HALF off all pax still come through arrivals. You can make money through advertising, arriving duty free initiatives and rentals from car hire, etc. Not to menton a coffee shop for those waiting.

February passsengers 46,945 (29.5% down)
A 30% reduction in passengers for February is alarming. Especially considering the daily EDI connection is still running in Feb, hasn't been cut yet. More falls projected for months ahead then.
Notable positives:
Geneva up 4.5%
Tenerife up 51%
Las Palmas up 92%
Lanzarote up 179%
Notable negatives:
Dublin down 38.6%
Edinburgh down 25%
Gerona down 55%
Southampton airport grew by 6% during Feb 2010.
Exter fell only by 8%
Doncaster was similar to Bournemouth, falling by 28%

Alderney

I don't think that Flybe would do that: they have two Twin Otters that are located at the other end of the country flying Barra beach services. They have only flown to Alderney on one route, and that was for a short time in 1985 from Shoreham with the Twin Otters. Very shortlived. Any thoughts?

Calm down Shamrock.
The terminal is still being built and by far from finished. Just because they have started using it does not mean its all done..
The new revised Arrivals hall is under planning permission which was sumitted in January. I am sure once this has cleared the Arrivals hall will start build meanwhile we still need the Portacabin to keep the airport running smoothly.
