I did not see that one coming
This is certainly a kick in the teeth for Southampton. Perhaps a sensible move for Flybe though to leverage a better deal at BAA controlled SOU. It also ensures competitors don't come into Bournemouth with better frequencies thus diluting the monopoly Flybe SOU market.
This will stop Air Southwest from considering adding Bournemouth. But the Dash 8-400 trumps the Dash 8-300 although Air Southwest may have added more frequency than Flybe will.
But after all is said, this is good news as the aircraft type and airline brand is a perfect match providing ideal capacity. Hope they keep it running year-round and consider the badly needed UK domestic routes perhaps even GCI.

I wonder if Flybe would consider using franchise carrier Loganair & their Twin Otter equipment to operate BOH Alderney, a much missed route by the islanders & tourists alike since the withdrawal of Blue Islands?

Flybe's new Bournemouth route no risk to Southampton Airport
Flybe's new Bournemouth route no risk to Southampton Airport
7:00am Friday 12th February 2010
AIRLINE Flybe has moved to dismiss fears it may switch from Southampton Airport to its Bournemouth rival, after bosses revealed plans to launch flights there for the first time.
Currently by far the biggest carrier at Southampton, Flybe yesterday announced it is to launch a daily service to Manchester from Bournemouth starting this May.
Coming just days after the firm announced an end to its sponsorship of Saints and as Bournemouth Airport bosses put the finishing touches to a new terminal, the development triggered concerns the regional flights giant may quit Southampton.
Traditionally more of a holidaymakers airport than Southampton, which is popular with business travellers, Flybe’s spread along the south coast puts it in direct competition with bitter rival Ryanair and budget giant Easyjet.
A Flybe spokesman pointed out the Southampton to Manchester service runs six times a day, compared to just one flight from Bournemouth.
The airline, which employs 250 people in Southampton, grew its operations in Southampton by 7.5 per cent last year and expects to at least repeat the performance during 2010.
A spokesman said: “Flybe are the biggest domestic airline in the UK and there are very few airports we don’t fly from and Bournemouth is one of those.
“It is no surprise that as we look to increase our market share that we would look at other airports.
“But to compare our operation at Southampton to Bournemouth is like comparing apples and pears. It’s a completely different product.
“Southampton is our busiest base in that we offer more routes from there than anywhere else and we look forward to offering more in the future. Our commitment to Southampton is unaffected.”
He added that they would “see what happens” at Bournemouth but that there was “nothing further planned” to happen there this year.

No news is never normally good news, and the lack of an update on the arrivals hall.
However, a new planning application is going in for a smaller building.

54% less floorspace than before.

Mixed Feelings
Whilst it's admirable that the airport is considering the environment so seriously and incorporating wind turbines, solar power, ground warming and cooling processes and rainfall harvesting; it is strange that the building has such a completely different look and feel to the main building - making it look like arrivals is an after-thought. Which it always has been at BOH.
The plans dont seem to reflect that 54% reduction in floor space though as the new building proposal looks very similar in floor space to the previously proposed one.
Plus - the application was submitted 29th Jan 2010. How long will this now take to get from approval to opening!?

Equally Mixed Feelings Ryanair
Change in MAG plan is probably due to an overspend on the Main Terminal !
However I'm sure Bournemouth Airport have mixed feelings about Ryanair dumping all their Domestic and most of the other European routes they used to serve, in favour of a mirror image of the routes already operated by Thomson and Palmair !
Lets hope Flybe can see the Gap in the market, to EDI, PIK, AMS, CDG, CCF, LIG, HHN/FRA etc. A large percentage of SOU customers must come from the BOH catchement.
The question is will the smaller Arrivals be able to handle the same number of PAX as the Departures ?
Or will we all be waiting on stand to offload in turn, or PAX stood out in the Rain I suppose umberellas are cheaper than Bendy-buses

Hopefully beyond the public sign of support BEE will have not missed the opportunity to flex a bit of muscle at SOU in order to get the ILS up to CAT 1(and thereby decimate the level of weather diversions), squeezed some extra flexibility on airport closing when flights are delayed and end up diverting (kicking the next morning's departure schedule into touch), getting the current minimal taxiway system sorted to avoid the mega delays due to backtrack requirements (especially the delays when 02 is in use, due to narrow runway width preventing the E195s from making a 180 turn) and sorting the lack of controlled airspace requiring routine flying of orbits to get the height off when inbound from the north.

Sounds like you think Flybe would be better off at BOH, as none of those problems you highlight exist !
Despite the extreme weather BOH stayed open, when all others had to close !

Flybe booking engine showing more flights
The Flybe booking engine is showing flights from BOH to EDI, GLA, IOM, BFS & MAN all starting from 27th May '10.
Not sure if this is direct or via MAN

Its a good start i guess !
Testing the water this summer with a lunchtime flight aimed more for the leisure traveller with reasonable fares rather like BMI baby to Jersey
If its supported then i am sure there will be better things to come out of this , the airport has going through a massive change in a bad climate , years ago the airport had 1 Palmair flight a day so its come a long way
I know many people want things to happen quickly but i think they are going about it the right way with controlled growth , long may it continue there are not many airports in the UK of Bournemouth s size that have 3 based airline s operating out of it

Idea !
I know what I'd be doing if I were Flybe.
Set up a dozen routes direct from BOH.
Then if it looks like the bookings won't make the break even load factor, Bump em all off to SOU, it'll only be PAX that would probably have flown from SOU anyway.
Nothing ventured. and all that.
2 Base a/c should do the trick ( to start with ).
It's got to be a better shout than that connecting flight nonsense.

I don't think you had enough exclamation marks in that DILLTHEDOG...
I agree to some extent. A small-scale (non-based) Flybe hub at BOH would be good for the airline. Offering PAX the choice to fly up from BOH and back into SOU if the timings were not good enough at either airport. There is no 12.05 departure from SOU to MAN so this new flight timing completes a gap. PAX can now 'mix and match' departures and arrivals from SOU/BOH
Plus at the same time as others have mentioned on here, it prevents the routes being taken by competitors thus diluting their SOU market. Remains to be seen if they will end up diluting their own market (!) or whether in fact as they claim the markets are substantially different enough to not impact.
I foresee Flybe starting JER & GCI from BOH (marking a return to these routes after a 17 year gap; albeit under their previous name Jersey European)
The connection flights in the booking engine from EDI, GLA, IOM & BHD to BOH will certainly prove popular and should ensure very high load factors on the MAN service.

When Emirates added flights to Newcastle, would you say Newcastle got flights to Sydeny, Hong Kong and 70+ other new destinstions, or would you say it got a new route to Dubai?
