adsyj its a Cessna 195.

Its the first thing Cessna designed after WW2 (hence the 1930s lines) and first flew in 1947 as the C190 - although this one is a 1952 model. The only difference between the 190 and 195 is the size of the engine. Originally this one was in fact built as a C190 (245hp Jacobs radial) but was later re engined with a 330hp Jacobs LM6b which makes it a C195B. Most C195s have 275hp some 300hp. The LM6B engine was what the US military bolted to the front of their 195s (designated LC-126). Yes the thing goes like a dog shot up da ar$e with 330hp.:E

This one belongs to a HKG based friend of mine - he has left it in SEQ for the last 6 mths or so as he slowly circumnavigates Oz and twists my arm to take it for a fly when I am in Brissy.

Looking carefully at the Joe in the left (instructor) seat, he has a dual personality issue as well, with the Union Flag on his right shoulder and the Australian flag on his left :p

Re the flight suits, the majority of operators these days contribute to Mr Sisley's retirement fund and wear two piece nomex suits. Practical, comfortable and fire resistant I have seen them in use as company issue from offshore to fire ops to utility to scenic to instructing. And apart from the silly shoulder bars, I heartily endorse the use of them for helicopter ops :ok:

Photo no.1 also reminds me that you don't get into an R22, you put it on.......

VH-XXX
2nd Mar 2012, 10:55
You are dead right there John and no offence indended. They are quite different ops to FW and do indeed require additional equipment for safety and comfort. Years back in FW ultralights almost everyone wore helmets, but that now appears to be a thing of the past for all but a few pilots.

Ah yes, the nomex flight suit to give you more chance in case of fire. Looks pretty sexy in the cafe at lunchtime also.

Personally, I would be reaching for a bone dome first - before donning the fire resistant suit, which isn't going to help you much if you are unconcious when it goes "WOOMP"!

John Eacott
2nd Mar 2012, 11:40
Of course you would: if you are less than 5ft tall and able to wear a bone dome in an R22 :p

Did you happen to notice the headroom available with that sexy peaked cap, perchance? Have you done much flying in rotary, and found why two piece nomex suits are (as I mentioned) favoured by operators around Australia, from IFR offshore to instructing?

I see it as more of a level of professionalism. In other sections of these forums there's discussions about the R-44 post crash fires so I'm seeing it as companies who want to do everything they can to make their students and staff safer during training and flying ops.

Don't the bars give a sense of pride as well? I have a lot of pride in what I do and what I've had to do to get where I am.

These are great photos and maybe some companies should look at following the example.

But that's just my 0.02c

John Eacott
3rd Mar 2012, 00:02
I should modify my comments about the bars: HeliWest have about 20-30 aircraft and it is (as mentioned) a source of pride to achieve the position that the bars reflect. The left seat pilot could be on their Bell 212, 412 or Bo105 as well as the R22, and the right seat (student?) could well be a crewman receiving pilot training.

Nice photos, and the professionalism of the company to have a standardised, practical uniform shouldn't be a source of derision by some PPRuNers :=

CYHeli
3rd Mar 2012, 09:01
Thank you for your comments John and others. I was instructing in YZO that day at TWB. The student in the right seat is a crew man on one of our BO105s who is doing his CPL training in his own time. His flight suit is simply wearing the best gear available at the time. For me, it's the uniform they give me.
The reason for the Union Jack is that I was born in Hackney and my dad passed away this year. He served in various places, mainly in the Merchant Marine as an RO. I guess you could say that I am wearing my heart on my sleeve in memory of him.
The W***er bars are actually silver to match the silver reflective stripes on the flight suit. As we have been doing some higher profile jobs recently, it's easier to leave the bars on. Besides, I've grown accustom to them.

Good photos Scotty, keep them coming.

and for the others...he's just too long for a bone dome in an r22........me on the other hand could stack em up like a display unit.

Desert Flower - there are three other aircraft in that frame - two are indeed Cessnas, an engineless Birddog and a 172 IIRC. T'other is a Queenair; an ex-RFDS unit that until last year was a static display at the RFDS visitor centre in Cairns. I believe it is parked at Mareeba awaiting the building of the new Qld RFDS Visitor Centre at Longreach.

Great photos Scott

I would absolutely endorse wearing of flightsuits in helicopters of every variety, and bone domes too if you can. Helicopters often give little warning of impending failure, are quick to the ground and burn well! Chances of survival and minimising permanent injury are much, much greater when wearing the above. I remember reading a report written by an RAN pilot about the issue.
Even in some fixed wing ops flight suits and helmets would be of benefit. Certainly much better than the poly/cotton ice cream suit, which would only melt to your skin in a fire.

It is funny to see one operator who insists that the jacket is really a shirt and it is to be tucked in!Until reading this it's something I had never given any thought. Wore the two piece in civil and combat, and wore it not tucked in. Would be a pity on reflection, if the shirt was to ride up for some reason and singe, or worse, the midriff area. After all, you are wearing it for a reason, not that it's always going to save you.

The aircraft hit extremely hard on the chin bubble and just seemed to crush flat to the ground at that point. No bounce, just sort of crushed like clay. The fire was a terrific ball that immediately engulfed the entire aircraft. "As I orbited the crashed chopper, we watched in disbelief as a figure stood up and walked out through the boiling flames. I rolled around and then giving myself enough space for a 'flying approach,' we were able to land close to the chopper. "By the time we landed, just moments later, the aircraft and whatever was in it, was a burning black heap in a pile. Like I said the burning figure just walked out of it. He didn't bump into anything or even climb over nothing - there was nothing left. I know that the gunner and crew chief were burned in the crash. The ammo on the aircraft was cooking off and exploding now, not to mention that there were still a lot of bad guys shooting at us from various positions in the tree-line. I was seated in the cockpit on the right as AC and I had landed my ship next to the crash on my side. I sent my door gunner out on the left to lay down a covering fire. He had the M-60 going to town with a 100 round belt draped over his shoulder. While the gunner surpressed, the crew chief ran out to the burned pilot - it was the co-pilot. His Nomex was completely burned away. Nothing was left of his uniform or his boots except a small band around his waist where there had once been a belt and part of his flight helmet. There were no ears, eyes, hair, or facial features left. When the crew chief removed his helmet, he was to find that the foam liner had melted to his head. He appeared to feel no pain.

He did not survive.

If you are going to the extent of wearing a nomex suit, go the whole nine yards. Helmet, no nylon/polyester of any sort (never understood why pilot jackets are nylon - get leather), nomex gloves, leather watch band (worn over the nomex sleeve, not against the skin), all leather foot wear (preferably boots).

Meanwhile. Siiiigggghhhh.

CY,

I was born in Walthamstow, and Dad was at stationed at 'Ackney nick for many years. Wild horses couldn't drag me back :p

RSaigon,

Two piece is all about comfort compared to the grow bags that are hot and awful to live in: especially for No 2's :ooh: I recall a trial set of suits with different weaves left and right which were held together by a zip from neck to chest. The guys thought ability to unzip for a visit to the heads to far outweigh the cr@ppy material!

DSE Victoria have even made a requirement for aircrew on fires to have one piece suits, even though their firefighters on the ground wear two piece outfits. When you're resting for 5 minutes it is so much easier to remove the jacket, yet still look reasonably tidy with the nomex trousers. And what Brian says about nomex: it is only one stage of protection, along with gloves, non synthetics, boots and when possible, helmet. I'm on a break from offshore and all the operators (Bristow, CHC, HeliRes) are now in Mr Sisley's finest products when flying the bears out and back

Where is that book extract from please? It's not a book extract, but an after action interview of the people concerned by a gentleman whose task was to assess battle damage to aircraft. One of the crew (gunner) who died in the crash was an Australian Navy sailor.

OZBUSDRIVER

G'day ABX, you wouldn't think there was going to be any sunshine at 0700local. Sky cleared to a bit worse than sct by 1030 and when these photoes taken it was blowing about 15+xwind and isol cu. it started coming back in late aftn. Good show, considering xw kept nearly all the tailies on the ground and the rain at TEM kept the Sabre and Boston grounded. Judie's P40 copped a flat tail wheel then the xw picked up a bit too much.

I have to admit I was taking that photo just after getting the OK for climb from F110 to 130, and in doing so I had incrimented the QNH , I took the pic so I could dump the camera/phone and I then set it back again, as you can see in a later one.

In that case I'll also point out that it won't fly left wing low if you set the rudder trim appropriately. Even with all that good gear the Sammy Davis Junior (or in your case the 'Michael Jackson') is crying out for a little bit of love and devotion. (Ignore if your rudder trim is a little bendy bit hanging off the rrrrrs end)
Your elevator trim is either extremely sensitive or your pax were running up and down the aisle, because in both photos it is out of trim. AND
With the AP engaged to an ARINC GPS it is still a bit right of track. Didn't you glue the Fin on straight?

Jaba, Deny me the Chocky Frog will you?
In that case I'll also point out that it won't fly left wing low if you set the rudder trim appropriately. True Even with all that good gear the Sammy Davis Junior (or in your case the 'Michael Jackson') is crying out for a little bit of love and devotion. (Ignore if your rudder trim is a little bendy bit hanging off the rrrrrs end) Not quite, it is adjustable in flight, but it is manual and involves reaching over.....and I usually just rest a boot on to take up the little bit not dialled out. Yes...call me Lazy...guilty as charged. besides it goes pretty well even not perfectly trimmed ;)
Your elevator trim is either extremely sensitive or your pax were running up and down the aisle, because in both photos it is out of trim. Yep, in a bit of light chop and it could have been just a momentary thing. In the climb it was just the AP complaining andbeing lazy....I was just being lazy and not complaining :)AND
With the AP engaged to an ARINC GPS it is still a bit right of track. Didn't you glue the Fin on straight? Now that one earns you a chocky frog back :D I had not seen that earlier, the pic in the climb was bang on, but later just a smidgeon off, I did dodge around a couple of tops, so maybe that explains it, might have been settling back on track when I took the pic, I do not recall. Trent, you've been playing cricket without a helmet again, haven't you? :=

Trent 972

Steve, .... Cricket! ....please.
Cricket is a sport for all those school kids and Unco's who didn't get picked to play Rugby at school. People only play cricket because they're no good at fishing.
Rugby League, (not the Rugby that is 'Played in Heaven', because it's played by a bunch of fairies), are the great and Godlike sportsmen and they drink Bundy, lots of it. Puts hair on your chest and balls. ***League players make the best pilots, because they've got an interesting topic to talk about on long sectors*** (Aviation content)

Other minor sports like soccer and hockey are played by under 17's and people who haven't yet worked out they're gay.
Golf is a sport for people who other people don't want to play with.
Sailing, each and every sailor is a Bundy drinker, the Rugby League players kindred spirit.
Tennis is a noble sport, there might be a few Bundy drinkers amongst them.
That just leaves Road Cyclists, the sport for people dedicated to Organ Donation.
God bless Road Cyclists. I hope they don't drink the Bundy, because we may need their organs one day. No offence to organ donators, they are truly magnificent.

Trojan,

Told you I was useless at recce

How about photo #1 being Albany (I'll just keep guessing at country strips)

Pontius is on the the money; a very dry Albany. :ok:

Dog, It does look like Balidu, that's were the operation is based too.

Any guesses for #3?

Not Townsville either, but It does look similar in the photo.

Not taken by the Townsville refueller either! I took the shot with a disposable on the way out to my aircraft.

What sort of Cessna is this?

My money is on early 182!

Frank Arouet

Agreed, a 182. Full stop. As opposed to the A model.

From Wiki: The Cessna 182 was introduced in 1956 as a tricycle variant of the 180.

In 1957, the 182A variant was introduced along with the name Skylane.

So I know where you were yesterday OZBusDriver

The photo was an ad-hoc snap so I wasn't actually aiming to get specific figures or showcase the performance. I think it was just at the end of the climb so high revs without the speed to match. It was a quick 11 mile flight

It's a nice machine in flight and fairly well equipped, not overly bumpy, just a little ugly. The aircraft and I soon became "one" in terms of handling. My only complaints are the vibrations it has because it's a little "tinny" compared to a carbon aircraft that I'm used to. Has good luggage space, moderate comfort and reasonable visibility which could be a little better if the wing wasn't so far forward.

A 'Familiar rego'.....
VH-EOG, used to be a FU24A, Fletcher. This one was a survey aircraft and was at JT for a year or so, just 'sitting'.

Ye Olde Log Book says I did an 'Endorsement' March 18 1970. It was a single seat of course, so the deal was the CFI was to fly it for an hour or so, then come back and tell me how it flew, then I would fly it for an hour or so, and he would sign me off....(The days of 'endorsements'...)

Well, all of that happened, and that afternoon I departed JT for BK, via 'stops numerii' because it held 36 gals @ 12 GPH.....and it had a definite 'step'.
In normal 'waffling' turb. flight in the lower levels - 87kts IAS.
Get a smooth patch and get it 'on the step' - 100kts IAS.

Interesting and enjoyable flight.

re - Fraser 73/74 #9410

That is my paint scheme ( white with the blue line continued up the rear of the rudder a-la 'scorpion' stinger, taken from the '68 Cessna 206 style to make the company flagship look better....modern even....), but without the company logos. Ken Hale, Whitakers truck spraypainter and I applied it when Bevan took the '59 Skylane in trade from Peter Bambling on some trucks and tractors.
Can't tell if the fellow with the long socks getting the gear out of the locker is me or not.., by that time Bevan had a B.36, FWZ, but I was still doing some part time work in the Skylane as well, using it for charters on our licence. (Didn't like putting the 36 on the beach, as it got sand in the up-lock rollers, - along with other things. Later, after he had traded the 36 on a B.55, he got a Cherokee 6, PYD, to do the Island beach landing work, and another young pilot named Don to fly it.) Sid Melksham, from Eurong, bought it off Bevan and later painted a palm tree on the tail when he got his own licence. He later sold it to Sel Hewitt who used it on his own licence for Fraser work.
She did a lot of beach landing that old girl (but back then she was only 15 or 20 years young).
Can't quite pick the strip of the Cessna photo, could be Rainbow Beach at Inskip, doesn't look like Bogimba or Happy Vally, or could even be Orchid Beach - but we were generally banned from Orchid Beach because of IslandAir/UnionAir being the opposition, but the next one of the 6 is at Orchid Beach for sure.

This is how she ended up when she was too corroded to fly any more....

I stand corrected on the date and model. The Skylane dates it post 1957.

Of those early models my logbook shows VH RFK (ex agricultural 180 converted to tricycle by Hazleton's Orange), and VH GWF, reported to be a 182A. This one was a US import and had a VAR. Both performed very well but the noise would probably be an OH&S offence today.

Trojan, ref your piccie #3 at Amberley.
The photo is obviously taken a smidge after noon (local time), because the shadows of
a. The meat filled body bag at front of chopper barely casts a shadow with the sunlight on his back and his front in shadow.
b. The left skid is just in sunlight and the Huey shadows are only displaced slightly behind the chopper
In the southern hemisphere the sun is always displaced to the relative north except for a few days in northern Queensland but never at Amberley.
Therefore the aircraft is facing north, the photographer is to the west of the chopper and the photograph is looking towards the East.
If so, there are/was no large structures (as shown in the background) to the East of the AMS at Amberley.
yours in confusion ?????

Hi , just like to say that the avocet 's jabiru engine has got liquid cooled heads & SDSmultipoint fuel injection , & I've ordered an Airmaster prop ,
I've also redesigned the turret ,looks more like a lake type ,less drag than the 4 poster ,
The a/Incidence of the tail only looks excessive ,as the nose wheel is slightly lower so that on the ground you get better access to the back, makes the tail look overly high while on the ground .
I've also increased the dyheadral to 2.2deg & moved the wing 30 mm forward ,doesn't feel as nose heavy with two up and no cargo .
I been flying around with a beewee 100 Yamaha scooter in the back as well ,doesn't make a lot of differance to the trim , so it doesn't really need the jabiru trim , anyway , thanks for the feed back .
