Hi all,

The last couple of weeks of floating around on this site have been very interesting because first of all we had 'pilotwannabee' from NZ provide us with some very cool photos and captions and then the thread now on Camera types which has also seen some very good photos come out. Not only does it provide a lighter side to prune but it is really good seeing other peoples flyaways and working experiences because it is motivating because it is something I and many others have to look forward to.

I am starting this thread off in hope that it can be an ongoing thing where people can just add photos all the time. I dont know how it will go, could end up on the next page but I thought I would give it a go, if you could please put your beauties on here it would be much appreciated by me and im sure many others. I have put a few on to start.

Melbourne City and Albert Park Lake on the fresh morning we departed. Cloud at MB was OVC at 800' but it opened up over Port Philip Bay.

When i click on those links it just takes me to the hotmail web page. I had the same problem tyring to post up photos.

Woomera or someone... how do you post up a photo that will appear when the thread is opened. This will promote a better viewing experience by not having to click on the link all the time, but rather just scrolling down.

ct2k. Are you saying you don't see the photos or you don't know how to post photos? You need to have your photos hosted on a web site. Send me an email if you need explanation.

Nice photos Jet!! :ok:

I rectified the problem, soz about that, you just have to put the photos on a seperate website and then copy paste them. JB

Di_Vosh, what a disgraceful insult! The old Caribou is a superior and well designed aircraft. Many talented people spent years creating this machine and it is almost irreplacable in the role it performs (Buffalo could replace it).

Please everyone - a little more respect for the Caribou and especially the Buffalo would be appreciated.

Cheers

Apologies to any Bou drivers out there.

But... The old Caribou Says it all.

Yes, they were a FANTASTIC aircraft, but are well past their use-by date.

My comment came from frustration: The last three times I tried to jump out of (or dispatch) from one they either:
Couldn't leave QLD as the aircraft had a "fault".
Got to Nowra and THEN the aircraft had a "fault".
Got the "fault" fixed but then had a flat tyre.
Flew another Bou down to Nowra with the spare tyre, but (Nowra being Nowra) we were blown out and couldn't jump.

I agree that there is little out there that could do it's job as well.

Cheers

but (Nowra being Nowra) we were blown out and couldn't jump

Wasn't it the case that they looked at Cape Leeuwin & Wilson's Prom before moving PTS but couldn't find a suitable airport?!?!? They had to settle for the next windiest place ......

The Caribou, like many of our GA aircraft is a very ggod aircraft for it's purpose, but our third world aircraft maintenance system can only function with new aircraft.

We have many good people, but very little good maintenance.

Remember Guys, happy thread, happy thread

We had a saying,

If you want to have a good time.... take a Bou
If you want to get there on time.... take an airline

The Bou has character... reminds me of an e-mail floating around....

We gotta get rid of those turbines, they're ruining aviation and our hearing...

A turbine is too simple minded, it has no mystery. The air travels through it in a straight line and doesn't pick up any of the pungent fragrance of engine oil or pilot sweat.

Anybody can start a turbine. You just need to move a switch from "OFF" to "START" and then remember to move it back to "ON" after a while. My PC is harder to start.

Cranking a round engine requires skill, finesse and style. You have to seduce it into starting. It's like waking up a horny mistress. On some planes, the pilots aren't even allowed to do it...

Turbines start by whining for a while, then give a lady-like poof and start whining a little louder.

Round engines give a satisfying rattle-rattle, click-click, BANG, more rattles, another BANG, a big macho FART or two, more clicks, a lot more smoke and finally a serious low pitched roar. We like that. It's a GUY thing...

When you start a round engine, your mind is engaged and you can concentrate on the flight ahead. Starting a turbine is like flicking on a ceiling fan: Useful, but, hardly exciting.

When you have started his round engine successfully your Crew Chief looks up at you like he'd let you kiss his girl, too!

Turbines don't break or catch fire often enough, which leads to aircrew boredom, complacency and inattention. A round engine at speed looks and sounds like it's going to blow any minute. This helps concentrate the mind !

Turbines don't have enough control levers or gauges to keep a pilot's attention. There's nothing to fiddle with during long flights.

Turbines smell like a Boy Scout camp full of Coleman Lamps. Round engines smell like God intended machines to smell.

Pass this on to an old WWII guy (or his son, or anyone who flew them, ever) in remembrance of that "Greatest Generation".

From the days when Sex was Safe and Flying was Dangerous.....

Have a great day guys... beautiful morning in Auckland !

Cheers

bentleg. Nice picture - but it's 222 KB - it's 1024 x 768 pixels! :{

Please try to keep all images under 100 KB (640 x 480 pixels maximum). Not only do large photos take up band width, they also distort the thread width.

Here's a post from another PPRuNe Forum:

NOTE:

To post a picture on PPRuNe, it has to be on a website already - whether your own or someone else's. If it's not, all is not lost ...... read on.

If the picture already on a website .....

It will have an URL (the unique 'address' of that pic on the web)
To find the URL (using Windows):
Right-click on the picture and select 'Properties'
You'll see lots of info, including the URL.
Highlight and Copy the entire URL.
NB: Always highlight from the beginning or you may not get the full URL if it's long.

If the picture is on your hard disk .....

Option 1: Find a friend with a web site who will 'host' the picture for you They'll send you the URL for your picture so you can then post it.
or

Option 2: Use a photo-hosting site.

Photobucket (http://www.photobucket.com) seems to be the best, very simple to use and it's free.
An 'offshoot' of Photobucket is TinyPic but as far as I can see this one does not have a facility to resize the image.

Once you've loaded your picture on the host, it will give you the URL - or you can use the procedure described above.

Photobucket also allows you to reduce the size of any pics which are too big for the PPRuNe web page.

NB: Some photo-hosting services host your pics but won't allow you to link to them from another site.

Size is important!

Picture size must not exceed 800x600 pixels MAXIMUM, to avoid the PPrune thread viewing window becoming too large.

You can see the size of any image (in Windows) by right-cliking on the image and selecting 'properties'.

There are many ways to resize images, and since most photogs have digicams now and these normally come with image handling programmes it should not present too much of an intellectual challenge to produce the correct size!

There are many Shareware image handling programmes plus lots of FREE downloadable ones. A simple 'Google' search or read of a computer magazine or two will produce plenty of ideas. There are also several FREE 'on-line' image re-sizing sites. Here are a few links for you:-

1 Izhuk.com

2 Resizeimage.4u2ges.com

3 Resize2mail.com

4 Online-image-resize.kategorie.cz

5 Graphicssoft.about.com

PLEASE NOTE that since these are FREE they do impose certain restrictions on file types and sizes and normally require you to permit their 'cookies' onto your machine.

Now to Post!:

Begin to post as normal.

Click the IMG button - one of the buttons above the text box. NB: Ensure you have something other than 'BASIC EDITOR' selected in your 'User CP'/'Edit Options'

An 'Input Box' will appear.

Copy the URL into the address line as instructed.

Click OK.

Add whatever text you wish and Submit.

At first, as with any new process involving computers, you'll probably go through some http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/Heliport/pc-crash.gif moments.

Common Problems:

No 'Image' icon etc on the 'Reply' screen:

Wrong 'Editor' mode selected.

Picture doesn't display:

Your post may show a link, not a picture - edit your post.

Check to see if 'URL' appears anywhere in the web address of the picture. If it's there at all, it will be there twice. Remove both.

(You've used information from the URL, but those letters should not appear in the final address or you'll get a link instead of a picture.)

You have IMG..../IMG around the image:

You have copied an IMG tag from Photobucket rather than the URL tag. To get rid of it, either edit out the excess [IMG] [/ IMG] in your post or replace the code using the URL tag.

Copyright claims etc

In PPrune, we don't allow pictures which have any commercial links embedded or attached. Please 'edit' these out.

As usual, a PM to your local 'mod' will hopefully result in assistance if you get stuck!

The above is here (http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=203481), courtesy of another Mod BOAC.

Resizing Photos

To reduce an image size, download Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/).

Open the photo in Irfanview:

On the Tool bar select "IMAGE".
Drop down menu "RESIZE/RESAMPLE"
Right hand side click on "640x480"

That will give you an image under 100KB to upload to a web hosting site and post on PPRuNe.

I'll have a go at this... All scanned from 35mm slides. Colours went a little wonky on a couple of scans, but they're only low res. The slides used to be easier to catalog than prints and negatives and made better blowups. Now have a little Kodak digital.

Further to my northern counterpart's comments re Photobucket: You don't need to download any additional software for resizing. It's all built into the interface.

There are a couple of ways to do it. There is an edit function above each photo with which you can resize.

Additionally, if you go to account options, you can limit the maximum file size anywhere from 32kb to 1024kb. Easy!:8

Keep 'em coming:8

Good grief ultralights...in 1970 odd I used to trudge across the hill to that little beach behind the strut with my family most weekends. It was the site, effectively a private beach, of the Hornsby Police Boys Sailing Club.

Old wooden sheds with VJs, VSs, MJs, Moths and two Rothmans Class dinghies...anyone else ever sailed a Rothmans Class? I haven't seen another from that day to this and no-one I ever met in sailing ever did either...to the extent I am starting to doubt my memory.:uhoh:

Just off the bottom of that photo I was shipwrecked the very first time...when an out of control ski boat (one of those old clinker hulled type with a converted V8 mounted inboard-well it wasn't old then I suppose:hmm: ) T boned us amidships at some horrendous speed and completely took out the boat from the waterline up...4 nine year olds, two diving off the bow and two the stern...not a grownup within a nm. We bobbed around until picked up by the rescue boat...seemed like hours but was probably 5 minutes:ok:...the marine worlds version of Stirling Moss sat alone in his boat 100 yards away..we weren't gonna swim to his boat-he was scary-the prop shaft twisted all about by our ropes and sails:D

Ahh a simpler time...when 9 years were taught to be self sufficient...or drown quietly...still two laps of the beach fully clothed was the swim test you had to pass before getting in a boat so drowning probably wasn't all that likely...and it generally took longer than 5 minutes for those crap old lifejackets to become waterlogged:ok:

I did not take the pics. Its got American rego and advertises Holden. It lights up at night and has a moving sign on it. I've "run into it" when flying both in day time and once at night.

Interesting to watch it "land". It comes in at about 1000 ft (circuit height) turns its nose into the wind then nose dives at about 45 degrees to the waiting ground crew. They've got a pole for it between the grass runways at Camden NSW.

There is a video at this link where you can see it being assembled. http://www.holden.com.au/www-holden/jsp/campaigns/airship/airshipframe.jsp

Another page of photos I would like to link are a series of shots Geoff Cooper (aka Spinco) took for me while piloting the ANZ B777. You can find them here: http://z11.invisionfree.com/nzff/index.php?showtopic=345

Believe it or not THIS is the aircraft owner and managing director of the company... Most of us might dream of taking on such a project but wouldn't go through with the dream... HE did.

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g32/sixtiesrelic/Backfire.jpg
Clicked just as she backfired

A young bloke came and looked her over. He said ,"He wouldn't want to fly such an old hunk of junk... He was getting checked out on a Bandit or something similar soon.
Passed through my mind to answer... "And how many hours do you have now?"
.....
Then point out, "Son when ya've got double digits in your thousands of hours you'll sit up one day and wonder what all the scrambling up the heap was about.
You've never really FLOWN an aeroplane, because in modern hi performance aircraft you don't fly 'em, you OPERATE them and the time in lighties you were taught to pretend they were high performance.
The Auto pilot flys them, all pilots do is program them and monitor the systems.
One day you'll remember us and realize, we've had what you dreamed of before you embarked on your career.
We started out "flying", did our years "operating" and finished up in the classic old Gooney which doesn't even have an auto pilot... and you know, after poling the old girls around the sky for hours, you are more relaxed when you step down than you are on shorter flights in jets.
For those who don't believe me check out how many ex airline blokes own real aeroplanes!
A couple of weeks ago I was at a get together of those blokes and there were a couple of RAA aircraft, 3 Chipmunk, Tiger Moth, Auster, Cherokee, Bonanza, Cessna 180, Cessna 310, Beech 18, Shrike Commander and Mustang owners and they were flying their aircraft for the pleasure of themselves and us on the ground.

Oh how true,
The young guy you speak of is an indictment of the "modern airline pilot".
The future of the industry is really sad, the romance called aviation is nearly gone.
The future is computer geeks who are all excited about talking on radios and electronic flight decks, wearing jackets and caps and wandering aound shopping centres in uniform.

Love your photo's, and well done to that young guy who took on the DC3.

With all due respect we are paid what we are for when something goes wrong, not when everything is going like clock work. What an airline is prepared to pay its drivers has nothing to do with how difficult the job may be perceived to be by those outside but by supply and demand. What we have seen going on in Australia over the last five years is supply and demand at work. While there will always be an oversupply of fresh CPL’s in Aus, the time is fast approaching that experienced drivers will be in short supply. It is already happening in other parts of the world. Once it starts happening in Australia the tide will turn. By the way I am a beancounter.

By the way the photo of the Airbus crew rest area is from the A340-600 and is the cabin crew rest area. There is a separate rest area next door for the S/O or F/O. The captain and relief commander have a separate crew rest area just behind the cockpit. As a Relief Commander, F/O or S/O you log nothing while in there. The A340-300 has a different crew rest area and the A330-300 doesn't have one at all, at least ours don't anyway.

Mudskipper ... what altitude does your ops manual instruct you to plug the auto pilot in!!!
Not taking anything away from you and your 330 tons of aluminium...I didn't pole that much much around the sky, but 60 tons on an 18 meter runway in the same conditions ... yes!
The only time you're allowed to fly those things is in the Sim.
So I still say you are now computer programmers who get to take off and land... It's not your fault! You have to obey the rules.
I ignored the company edicts to plug the auto pilot in at what ever alt. they reckoned and flew the aircraft to flight levels, because I liked flying.
The proof of the pudding is the number of blokes who are buying light aircraft and going FLYING

Hmmm ...matey same aircraft same company ....erm ....which one was the 18 metre runway? :p

It's the old one about Shamus and Paddy on their way to a new airport in their Aer Lingus A320. Shamus says "Roight Paddy, it's a very short strip, oi'll do the stick and the brakes and you do ta throttle and the flaps". "Roight Shamus" says Paddy "Oi'll be ready - as soon as you put her down oi'll dump the flaps and hit the max reversers.".

In come our heros and in a cloud of dust, smoke and noise come to a screaming halt just at the edge of the grass. "Bejesus" says Paddy "that's the shortest fooking runway I ever seen". "To be sure" replies Shamus, "but it's the fooking widest one".

Did a US trip in a 152 in July, ended up flying from Orlando, down to Keywest, Up through Atlanta, Illinois to Minnesota - then across to Michigan, - back down to Peoria, Illinois, then to Akron, Ohio, to Niagra Falls, then back to Orlando via Greensboro.. Was about 54 hours in 9 days :} , but am already getting withdrawl symptoms again
A good link that you can see where we went is at: US Trip - Great Circle (http://gc.kls2.com/cgi-bin/gc?PATH=KTIX-PHK-MTH-KEYW-MTH-KMLB-KTIX-CRG-AYS-MCN-KRYY-BWG-HNB-KDNV-JOT-KRFD-jvl-msn-eau-dlh-khib-dlh-ksaw-mnm-grb-kosh-msn-bdf-3my-pia-3my-c81-rfd-3my-ikk-fwa-fdy-mfd-3g6-yng-eri-dkk-buf-kiag-buf-fkl-ekn-roa-gso-khbi-flo-sav-ssi-komn-ktix&RANGE=&PATH-COLOR=red&PATH-UNITS=nm&SPEED-GROUND=95&SPEED-UNITS=kts&RANGE-STYLE=best&RANGE-COLOR=navy&MAP-STYLE=)

I'm sure a psychologist would be able to explain it, but the GAS thing put me right off trying to think what was on the South coast that being the more likely destination.

Kalbarri did pop into my head but it didn't "fit" my "preconception":ugh: :ugh: .

Been going there since 1959 (as a kid in our family Austin A70) when the road was a goat track and you could routinely pull 10lb Tailer out of the channel mouth off Chinamans Rock and eat your fill off Oyster Reef.:E

Yes at first but I dismissed ESP as it looks nothing like it and was trying to think of something further west towards Frankland River or west of Albany towards Augusta. One way or another I was fixated on the south coast because of the GAS connection.

Stallie mate what do you use for glideslope guidance as the perspectives would be all shot to hell and I imagine the arrival of the ground? could be quite surprising sometimes as it is black hole arrivals.?

Do you say fly a std circuit on reported QFE and/or is there sufficient contrast to eyeball it.???

Stallie, how was the glare? :uhoh: And judging the flare? :}

compressor stall
24th Sep 2006, 23:54
Glare is fine, just wear sunnies. The flare is no problem in clear skies - and don't trust the RADALT.
Gaunty - Generally a regular circuit is flown, although sometimes at 500' with a closer then usual downwind to inspect the tracks if doing multiple drags before committing to landing. As for glideslope guidance: time the circuit in the same way as one would at say Eucla at 0330 local.... :)
A landing area like this is great. Great definition for landing and orientation. Without the mountains and with BKN Cirrus or worse, there are similarities with the black hole approach except that you can't rely on a visual in the last 100 feet in your landing lights... For that reason, it's usually best avoided. :8
When I did some skiflying in an Auster in overcast skies, you just set it up for touchdown with a nice slow rate of descent and wait for the bump. In deep snow it's like landing on a doona!

Any recommendations on a good digi with high resolution pics and handy enough to keep in a flight bag with your charts?
Probably best to pm me rather than take up thread space.

Kamalai was one of my favorite strips...always fun to catch up with Father Abel.

I will see what I can dig out.

These two were taken one morning at Kamalai when I went up there to salvage an Islander that had crashed there a few weeks prior. You can see what was left on the left side of the first piccy.

http://www.fototime.com/{F415A801-9953-4F15-A85F-556BE9AC08A8}/picture.JPG

In the above piccy we are standing on the threshold...where it drops near vertically for a couple of thousand feet. An interesting place to land in bad weather. I think I was flying Twotter P2-RDY that day.

Unloading RDY another day at Fane. A skinnier version of me on the left...cannot remember the old mission priest's name at Fane...only that he had been there since the 1930s.
