You don't need any paperwork to do anything on a home-built Kit Ultralight.

You could mount a bazooka on there if you wanted to, unless it was loaded.

Haven't see a Luton Minor for years. The one on the RHS with BP logo is very familiar to me. Also one in the photo I believe returned from The Antarctic after being left there for years. It had a JAP 2 cylinder engine. Nearly purchased it with a mate years ago. Last seen flying in VIC somewhere.

Its registration was ZK ENY.Operated at the time by a company called canterbury planes. I was there the day those photos were taken. It had just arrived direct from NZ. It landed and they removed the ferry tanks, installed the seats and then they took a bunch of people for a ride (including myself!) i remember doing some touch and go's out on the bay in it, exciting stuff for a little kid!

The only name i can associate with it was Brett Young an EX RNZAF chap who used to fly regularly at berwick at the time. i beleive the plan was to put it on the register and do joy rides somewhere around the great barrier reef. It stayed a casey briefly then went to moorabbin where it underwent extensive maintenance at schutts. ( i beleive it had a fair bit of corrosion in the hull) and was briefly placed on the australian register as VH ENY. The joyriding plans didnt eventuate and the aircraft was sold off some where in the pacific (or the phillipines??) and left the country. i dont know where it is now.

here is a another good photo of ATJ i just found on the NET (courtesy of Wal Nelowkin). I think just about all the tigers based at berwick over the years ended up on their backs:} I beleive Charlie (Alberts nephew) was responsible for what happened to ATJ in the photo above. VH FAH got blown over and VH TIG which was online at group air got busted a few times too!

the Fairey Firefly in the background was saved from the scrappers By Col Hatfield around 1968. it was later sold to the UK and subsequently ended up in the US where it is being restored to airworthy condition.

Good to see IRQ is still going! i went solo in that aircraft. PFK and WXP were sold to the RVAC and re registered. WXP was the 150 that ended up in someones back yard at moorabbin not so long ago:sad:. RAD was repainted and was still flying a few years ago when i last saw it at YMMB.

(p.s. Also under a Cherokee 6 at Orchid Beach on another New Years Day morning, - but I was alone -, however the other guy in the 6 wasn't.
My goal is still the same, - to see the sun come up out of the Pacific, on New Years Day, from a different Pacific island. This year I took off before sunrise and was east of Fraser before the first rays hit. Air Pacific used to have a slogan, Your Island in the Sky, - that was mine this year.)

Frigatebird,
One from the other Maryborough........
I also spent a while up in Rocky flying for Country Dare in '79 sometimes giving the pax I flew into Keppel in the Islander a somewhat literal meaning to the TAA slogan of those days about "Getting Wrecked on Great Keppel".
I took this (rather beat up) photo at MYB in about 1974. For those wondering - the Moris-esna was used by the "Firies" there.
Although I took a fair few photos in those days, for some reason I never managed any of Country Air's SYU, TIP, MCO, MCX and the twin PA-24's- MCW and MCY - if anyone has any from around that time, I would love to see them.

Mine was six years prior, and on Dons singles.
PA-28 MCR, BJB, BES, CUT
PA28-R BME
PA32 MCM MCW POR SMI CHT(MC- for Millroy Countryair - but as the Piper agent, he sometimes crosshired back and utilised aircraft he had sold to the graziers)

Cherokee 6's to Keppel, and paper runs to Brisbane and Mackay, coal miners to Blackwater, Seraji, Moranbah, Gladstone. Supply runs to Marble Island. Vets and Graziers to Monte Christo, Foxleigh, Grasstree, Woongarra, Ohio, Tartrus, Laurinel, Rockwood, Wilpeena, Junee, Balcomba, Doonmabulla, Albinia. Flights during the floods with a door off for the cameraman, up the inland route Highway to film all the cars stranded between the flooded bridges. Miners out from Blackwater before Christmas, and because the Dawson was still over the bridge, back the other way in January. Good fun, but the two other young guys I shared a house at Pink Lily with, died later in aircraft accidents.

Back then, some of the new ones Don was selling had Airconditioning. Had the flap underfloor, parallel to the fuselage that when opened, slowed the little Cherokees down about 12 knots. Ahhhh, but the Cool Air was Great... Didn't get to use those new ones much in Rocky's summer heat though, usually had the older bangers loaded to the hilt with papers for Mackay, or people, taxied out with the tail almost dragging on the bitumen, and after rotation, gained altitude only due to the curvature of the Earth. Would cross the coast at Emu Park at 3,000, after going via either the South Berseker, or the North Berseker points, so as in the event of an 'Unmentionable Event' we could at least glide to the Island or back to the coast. Sometimes cross hired Kieth Barlows old 6 CHT from his subsidiary company Overland Air, that he mainly used for buffel seeding. That was a 'roughie'... Jimmie Stewart was there in those days, but not long after he retired to go flying the Commanche for someone on their property. Max Conrad ferried the Tartrus Robertson STOL Twin Commanche in, and I met him briefly.

Yes it is the original Lucas alternator but like all engine accessories - starter, distributor, carbies etc - it has been overhauled.

I think 1966 was the first year to have the 4.2 liter XK engine and an alternator fitted. 1961 to 1965 E Types had a 3.8 liter XK engine and Lucas generator installed.

Owning a Jag should be mandatory training for pilots. They are machines that attract attention and are fun to drive.
They are also capable of high performance which results in much excitement. (I think they are female).
But they need much love and attention, and are sometimes hard to start. (more evidence that they are female.)
I once found a MK9 jag with low mileage and bought it. It truly was a high speed limo, but was unreliable. The radiator boiled on long trips and no-one could fix it. It did that once too often and was replaced with an Australian built ford.
I found that this english car was fitted with an american air conditioner (by the poms) and english v belts are different from american v belts, so the interface was wrong.
I still frive a ford.
Pilots have to learn to operate finniky, fussy machines that need much love and attention, and Jags are good training for that.

It’s a 93 XJ6 3.2L with 84K on the clock. The mags are actually Daimler rims and were the cars Achilles heel. They were Millimetric rather than the usual Euro Metric which made it a pain in the right rear end to get tires for. I ended up replacing them with a set of genuine 96 Jaguar sports rims about four years ago. Sorry. The interior is cream leather with the walnut trim on dash and doors.

If you know where I can get a replacement for the Clarion (I’m pretty sure it's a Clarion) in boot CD changer or where I can get it fixed please let me know. There aren’t many English radio stations in Hong Kong and the three or four there are, are only on the AM band.

Jaba,

When I saw that photo my adrenaline spiked. I am guessing a 1990 Gixxer 1100 with a few mods. And what a great Kat.

I am the proud owner of an 88 J model 1100 Limited Edition with around 16,000 km and totally original. I am sure you know the model I mean, black and gold Hyper Endurancer. The last of the square backs. It has been in storage for the last 15 years or so. The tyres are more than likely as hard as steel now!!!

That was where it all started!

I nearly sold it a few years back during a fleet rationalisation I attempted to undertake. By geez I am glad I didnt now! Seeing your photo has reinforced that for me 1000%. The bike is irreplacable.

I have searched all my archives and bugger it I dont have a digital photo to post for you. Another time.

Lake Hood is the world's busiest seaplane base, handling an average of 190 flights per day. It is located on Lakes Hood and Spenard, next to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Stevens_Anchorage_International_Airport), three miles from downtown Anchorage.
A canal dug between Lakes Hood and Spenard created the seaplane base. It pre-dates Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, the runway of which can be seen in the upper part of the photo.

Can you imagine this happening in Oz? 190 lighties a day in the same circuit area as an international airport - controlled by the same tower.

Dr :8

Not possible in Australia because of our "unique australian situation" Our airline pilots cannot handle a situation like that. They are being dragged, kicking and screaming into the 21st century, but are not there yet.
And all those lighties steal paying passengers. Can't have that.

FTDK. A month or so back I was taking off from Lake Hood, using West departures which start in Lake Spenard and go down the channel. I had a problem with my prop and could only get low power, and could not get onto the step. Must have been 20 knots max, the noise was tremendous (I was flying a Sea Hawk Experimental with a pusher prop).
By the time I entered the channel I knew I would not get off the water but it seemed quicker to continue as I was than to pull off the power and taxi.
I knew the Tower was yelling at me, but could not understand over the engine noise.
I was about to pull off into the AMD bay at the end when the airplane decided to get up onto a step, and I was able to take off, finally.
I mumbled some apology and departed the area.
Don't know how many others had to go around, but I assume it was more than one.
Never been back.
It is about half covered in ice, now, anyway.
That water way is lit, did you know? Has lights on each side of the channel.
Had to do more than one landing there at night. The usual technique is to use a glassy water approach, it saves time and gets you clear of the channel quicker.
There is an adjacent gravel runway for the wheels, and the airport is nearly as busy in the winter with skiplanes. They groom the ice on the lake when it is thick enough.
They have a big floating mower that cuts the weeds. That became necessary after they shot all the ducks, which originally kept the weeds under control but were perceived to be a hazard to airplanes (not true, you should see the ducks in action). If the weeds were not cut and removed, they would clug up the lake and a takeoff with the water rudders carrying 100 pounds of weed is not a pretty sight.
Very few airplanes actually do circuits, most are arrivals or departures and they are very efficient, until I arrive!

a nice collection of pictures from Iwo Jima after being taken by American forces in 1942.Excellent quality pics indeed Ultralights and full credit to all US photographers and participants.

But your chronology is cactus. World War Two commenced in 1939 but by 1942 American operations were still very limited and little if any territory had been taken from the Japanese.

Iwo Jima was not taken until 1945.

19th Feb 1945 was the first day of battle on Iwo Jima as the US Marines came ashore to a determined Japanese defence.

Something like 2,400 U.S. Marine casualties on day 1.....

Over 25,000 wounded and 7,000 dead in the taking of the island.

Not nice.

I thoroughly recommend reading "With the Old Breed" by E.B Sledge. Its one of the books the series "The Pacific" was based on. I don't think I have read an account where you can feel the impact and horror of that campaign in such clarity

Does that foam stuff your paint?

I remember the carby in my Kingswood V8 backfired and caught on fire at a fuel bowser back in the late 90s. (after I tipped a little bit down the carby to get it going). The owner ran out with the Foam and gave it a hit. It caused the paint in my engine bay to start flaking

If they were clever it would have been water and some mild car wash.....same effect, and a clean C180 afterwards:ok:

Good to see the photos without comment on the previous page caused some to think about these things. Wasn't prepared to volunteer anything myself in case of a mix-up, but offered to help in other ways. Prefer to wash my aircraft myself thanks.

One opinion from an engineer, was that foam used was inert anyway....

Not a 320.
There are not enough windows and the 320 being turbocharged has the exhaust exiting the cowling straight down ahead of the wing spar, not over the wing as this one does.

I say 310D or 310E.

If it's ex military it's a U3B, known before 1963 as an L27B.
