I just stumbled on this Thread. Wish I had found it sooner as I would have posted links to my photos sooner. Guess I was too busy having fun this summer and not spending enough time reading these forums.

Below is a link to some of the flights made in my Amphib Seaplane this summer as well as a couple other planes. Some really cool shots my favorite is the one where we land on a Glacier lake, anchor the plane to a floating iceberg and then a client proceeds to climb to the top of the berg. That one can be found on the third slide show of the “Annual BC Floatplane Association flying” link.

Cessna's marvellous 210. One of the best things that they ever pushed out through the factory door's at Wichita.
On the trip (4,400nm) the aeroplane consistantly tas'd out at 170kts up at 9,500'. The other remarkable fact about the trip was that not once did we ever experience a headwind on any of the legs. Not once!!!
The lowest groundspeed noted was 177kts, the highest was 215kts.

The only reason anyone would be in love with the C210, is because they have not spent enough time in a Bonanza!

Hard one to pick there FDTK, but I'll go with the 210. Bonanza's are undoubtedly wonderful aeroplanes (nearly a 1,000 hours in them, so got a pretty good idea what they fly like), but the 210 floats my boat a bit more than the A36's for a number of reasons. And before anyone says they fly like a truck (the 210), they don't. If you want to experience that, strap yourself to a Mooney 201.

Hendon, -a quarter century ago while on leave. If the world had turbo-diesels back 70 years ago, and we have them in two place cars now, even motorbikes, why not have them burning Avtur (or Power Kerosene like the old Massey Harris 44, but she was non-turbo, just had two tanks and you switched from petrol to kero after the hotbox near the carburettor warmed up) in reasonable size commuter airframes as well? Will be digging out my Mustang, Beech 18, Lockheed 10, Winjeel etc. in full cry - photos from Mangalore of '82. Know they are there somewhere...

Wanderin Dave gets the gong, apparently it was a Pressurised Navajo PA-31P, now a Technoavia GM-17 Viper. Conversion done in Russia. Could be an interesting machine.

There was a company here in the states working on a similar conversion for the Cessna 340 also using the Walter 601 engine but I haven't been able to find anything on that for a few years now.

No, the conversion I saw in progress was for a single turbine on the nose of a C340.
I think that single engine Navajo looks really good, who knows how it flys.

MyNameIs, Tinny and Frigate - What are things like flying in the Sols? Been there a few times, just passing through though. Still lots of dramas with the locals? How does the Bongo go on some of those short strips?

Certainly one of the most beautiful places in the world... wouldnt mind working over there myself!

frigatebird
29th Sep 2009, 10:23
Mynameis - Like I said, its happening.. :)

Sunday, Bongos as you call them, and Twotters always go well on short strips, - that's what they were designed for.

Flying in the Islands is great, none better than Solomons and Vanuatu - not as demanding as the terrain in the Highlands of PNG. They have their own "special requirements" like anywhere, however. They tend to home grow their own Captains from the Copilots on the Twotter who have the local knowledge and have nowhere else to go. Not much turnover, I think, but sometimes N.Zed, Fijian, Tuvaluan, PNG, and Aus. trained Copilots get a look in with low time. Money low and management, am told, pretty selfish. Bit of crime that gets hushed up/ignored, even though there is not much of a tourist industry. The rest you can sort out for yourself if you're keen enough.

MyNameIsIs
29th Sep 2009, 12:29
Sunday99 - I never flew the Bongo in the Solomons (unfortunately/fortunately, i don't really know!) but it could do every strip the Twotter did- it generally didnt go past 100 or so miles from Honiara (no real need for it to go further unless it had to).

Its been a couple of years since i was there, things MAY have changed, but more than likely not- its the Solomons!!!!

Money is crap, but first job for a bit of time under your belt it isnt too bad. Get some time and move on/up if able to.

I was never once hassled in my time there- including walking around the streets on my own at stupid-o-clock after visiting the ATM to get a pocketful of $$ to go and spend on more Solbrew back at the hotel or club. Never felt uneasy or threatened etc.
I found it to be quite good- but thats not to say there isn't any trouble......

I did enjoy my time there and miss the place a little. One thing (amongst others) that I didnt get to see was the Kavachi undersea volcano spewing its guts, that would have been an awesome sight.

Anyway, more photos!

frigatebird
30th Sep 2009, 03:01
Last time they had the big shake in the west, the seabed and some islands jumped up over 10 foot, and reefs were fully exposed permanently. Channels into harbours were shallowed to the extent that shipping was running aground until they learnt the new routes. While at other places, the islands sank a bit so that high tides covered more. Munda airport got a dip in it halfway along from a fault. Hope not as bad for life and property this time.

That little island would have been inside a lagoon, so not as exposed to tsunami's as the downshock coasts and atolls on the edges. There are even artificial islands, built up with salvaged coral, that size, in some lagoons. It was a way to get away from the mosquitos, and to see the headhunting canoes coming from afar in the old days.

Good one Tank'.

I actually read that in Chuck Yeager's Autobiography. A defecting Korean fighter pilot was demonstating the finer points of the Mig15 when Chuck asked the same question. If memory serves, he answered something like.. "If airplane spin, put stick hard against line. If it spins more than one and a half times (Ithink that's how many it was), you go!" With the Korean pilot making a hand gesture indicating one should eject.

Beautifully simplistic the Ruskies!:E

Geez Cracker, you really challenge my memory banks!

I took a Baron into Milungera once only in 1990. I only remember that it was a nice big strip. That day I shared it with a Conquest.

Although I don't remember Milungera, I do remember the trip. Arriving in the dark back at Charlie's Trousers to drop off a pax, I couldn't get the PAL lights to turn on. Fortunately a friendly Qantas flight passing overhead did the job for me. Townsville-Charlie's Trousers-Milungra-Charlie's Trousers-Townsville was right on the limit for a B55. I recall having exactly 45 min left in the tanks when I filled it up.

I have never even flown over Milungera before or since. It just seems to be off my usual tracks.

HALO

3. (Earth Sciences / Physical Geography) a circle of light around the sun or moon, caused by the refraction of light by particles of ice
4. (Astronomy) Astronomy a spherical cloud of stars surrounding the Galaxy and other spiral galaxies

CORONA

a. A faintly colored luminous ring appearing to surround a celestial body visible through a haze or thin cloud, especially such a ring around the moon or sun, caused by diffraction of light from suspended matter in the intervening medium. Also called aureole.

Have taken the Metro 2 shots off. Don't want you fellas to think the store wasn't being minded. Think it was a a 5 and a half hour ferry flight, or could have been a 3 hour charter positioning flight, and needed to use the bottle. George was flying the controls, and as you saw, I was watching George. (and it was nice and smooth, and George was pretty good). Used to be able to reach the coffee urn when strapped in. Some of my old photos keep better than others. Here are a few more oldies to compensate.

Having part owned and flown a 12A they were built to last without the weak main spar of the B18.
