Which I belive is a 10A - Silver City.. been around for a while.

The other, FID, and its siblings FIE and I think FIF were all ex Flinders Island Airways..

FIE being the only 3 bladed Beech in country. (Stand corrected?)

nobody said the silver one FID was a Lockheed 10 or 12. The post evidently was referring to the red one 'Silver City' back over the page.

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy129/bird__photo/Aero%20Club/scan0002.jpg

Early Type Glider
Built by Les Hansen and Norwood Warry
Test flown by Stedd Lowe on the Old Race Course 1932

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy129/bird__photo/Aero%20Club/scan0004.jpg

The Aero Club is still going strong.
The clubhouse, an old wartime building (The Battery Hut) is used by an Ultralight (RAA) school now.
Club still has a 172 used by Private and Commercially licenced members, if they don't have their own.
And the clubhouse still gets 'Lit up' by 'Bright Sparks' at functions.

P.S. Sam still had 2 aircraft when I was learning in the late 60's., a Piper Tripacer that he flew now and then, and a Miles Messenger that had been grounded by D.C.A. because of suspicion about the glue used in the ply. His son told me this morning, that it was found later when the aircraft was sold and shipped to N.Z. that the glue and ply were O.K. after all, as his was a post-war model with the Blackburn Cirrus Major 3 engine (similar to the early Chipmunk engine, he said) of which only 38 were made.
If someone knows the history of this aircraft, (don't have the rego from then- but could get it), if it is flying, and if so - could they post a photo - as I haven't seen it for a long time.. :)
Photos of any Messengers welcome in flying colours, they are a classic old ship.:ok:

Not bad at all Captain Fathom, many credit points for you!

My "clue" was probably a bit off, couldn't think of a good clue other than to draw similarities to St. Marteen which is in that neck of the woods. Perhaps if I mentioned Pirates some more would have known but the twisted ones would have been thinking a-rse pirates, thus San Fran which was a long way off.

Well Forky - so many aeroplanes, so little time. With any luck I will add Lockheed 12a and Mooney to that list before the arse falls out of 2009.

WTF use is a women in every port?

After a stressful day today I dragged the Moth out and got in 30 minutes of aeros between 1745 and 1820 - was just lovely being up alone for a change - got a half decent reverse cuban out of her - I say half decent because the last half was not quite as nice as the first half - did about 10 loops and hit my wake on 9 - the barrel rolls need work though:ugh:

it's either a salute,

or he's the one taking the photo..

Might be Jaba scratching his head, after we strapped Jaba jnr into the front seat, thinking "This can only end in tears" or "its all good fun until someone loses an eye!"

Oh and I now have access to a mid 50s C180 in AKL to play with on layovers:ok:

And I think Oz is correct - that looks like left base to the grass at YRED in the last pic - always keep in tight in a Tiger - they glide like a house brick - in fact its a good idea to carry 1/2 a house brick when flying a Tiger - engine fails throw brick overboard then follow. When you stop get out and run lest said brick smite thee mightily on the head.

ForkTailedDrKiller

Hat

I am indeed fortunate that I get to fly for work. The pics and videos come from a mixture of work, play, and play when fortuitously in the general area for work. We planned Temora earlier in the year, and our end of year fly-in to somewhere has become a calender fixture, but most are just opportunistic.

Kilcoy came about cause I and the FTDK were in town for work that ran over a weekend. Chuckles was in town working on his Bo, and trying to settle his Bonanza withdrawal symptoms by slumming it in a Tiger, and Jaba ........ well Jaba was just being Jaba!

Jaba needed to go to Kilcoy to help out a fellow Retard Vehicle owner fit turbo gammis, I had a Saturday to kill, and Chuckles is just an aeroplane tart! He will jump at the chance to fly anything.

So off we went. 10 min Redcliffe to Kilcoy. Beautiful spot for a strip - with an interesting up hill runway. The PIC's approach (not mentioning any names) and landing was a mixture of B767 approach profile and Bonanza flare, finished off with a Tiger style "3-pointer"!

Kilcoy is a friendly place with a bunch of interesting aeroplanes. C195, Gypsy Moth, Waco (cabin biplane), Fleet, Harvard, to name just a few.. Chuckles was like a kid in a candy store!

Not much in the way of refreshments at Kilcoy so we hopped over to Kingaroy (17 min) where we had a superb lunch at the restaurant off the end of Rwy 34.

All up YRED-YKCY-YKRY-YRED was an hour in the Bo - and a great day was had by all.

Been enjoying your posts on here for about a year, particularly the ones from my area around YCAB. So now I've been let loose here's a few from my first trip with the wife from last weekend.

One of the main reasons I took up flying was for the scenery, which I think is reflected in the shots I choose to take - not least because I'm still relatively new to this stunning country and the views never fail to fascinate me.

Not too exciting but hope you enjoy...

Only used it once since it was shortened. Crosswind on 17 was more than I like in the Tiger so requested 22.

Old Pilots Never Die - They Just Fly Away....
(The times they were Bold - they escaped by the Skin Of The Teeth)

Frigatebird 1

Semi-Retirement (More time on the ground than in times past)
Too Young For A Pension..

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy129/bird__photo/Frigatebird%201/scan0001.jpg

The engine was overhauled about 4 years ago, second o'haul, used about 150 hours since - still less than 4,000 hours on engine and airframe. (Only a fraction of what I have - so I win there - and I started a fortnight earlier than the old Frig 1 did too - in that September, way back when..)

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy129/bird__photo/Frigatebird%201/scan0002.jpg

So the next project to keep old Frig 1 young, sometime, is to declutter the wires in the cockpit, bush the GPS 95 XL given me by a guy for mentoring him on a Baron (the first time I turned it on it thought it was still in Fiji) for a panel mounted Garmin 430 with an ILS/VOR indicator where the Altimeter is now, and relocate the flight instruments to the Basic T configuration, and plastic weld the holes up on the the instrument surrounds to make it look better (anyone help with a name for a good job there?). Then perhaps (if finances allow) a H.F for the long trip.

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy129/bird__photo/Frigatebird%201/scan0003.jpg

Would have liked a 200 h.p. Turbo-diesel and C./S. prop at the overhaul, but the company that will - doesn't make them yet. So I'll just potter along, - but if fortune smiles radiantly sometime - an IFR 182 with a diesel, autopilot, and long range tanks would be nice...... Frigatebird 2 !?

Later models with all the extra junk up front can handle like watermelon trucks by comparison.

I think you are being unkind to a stalwart of GA!

I have quite a bit of time in various models of the C172 from the earliest to the latest and can't say I have been disappointed with any of them. They are exactly what you would expect them to be - no more, no less. There are good reasons why they have outsold all other GA aircraft.

The ealiest I have flown was a 1959 model purchased new and delivered to Oz in 1960. My recollection is that it cost ......... 6,000 Australian pounds!

Yep, looks like a constant speed prop with a 180 or 210 h.p. motor too.. Even a Twin Commanche 160 h.p. motor (as seen in an RV) would be a good unit. Used to fly a straight tailed straight backed old 182 that would have made a great convert to tailwheel. Grand old ship..

LambOfGod
21st Dec 2009, 23:55
Awesome convert.. Would there be much improvement over fuel economy? And would this cost millions to get airworthy?..

Super Cecil
22nd Dec 2009, 00:13
Wild guess maybe $20K for conversion to tailwheel, $40K for a 360, close to $20K these days for the bigger engine STC which includes prop (Fixed pitch)and mount and the rest of the gear required. First of all you have to have a decent old 172 which minimum would be $30K. After all that you could nearly get a resonable 180 whith a bit of time to run flying and not having to do all that work.
The advantage is a 172 with a fixed pitch 360 would cruise about 120kts and burn around 40 L an hour.

Cessna had a backup plan just in case the 172 flopped. It was the 170C and it sported the square tail of the 172. They built four in 1956 before the 170C was swamped by 172 sales. The above photo pretty much depicts a 170C as it would've looked.

Looks like Queensland - west of the Divide - in the cattle heartland with regrowth on the pulled bits. Bit dry - but then a lot of places are, -before the Summer storms. Nice hard strip for when it does rain, grass nicely mowed (but then it doesn't need cutting often yet), didn't see the sock, but whoever looks after the strip probably made sure it had a good white one (the cones have survived the slasher after all). Your GPS's would get a workout to find it when the storms are around, but at least the hills are a fair way away. Don't recognise it, so haven't been there..

Yes Capt, it is not nearly so noticeable from the pilot's seat, except in really rough air. The camera was mounted just above the panel and appears to exaggerate the slight fish-tail that is a characteristic of the breed. Would be interesting to mount a camera in the same position in a "Piper"-tail Bonanza or a Baron - both of which fish-tail, though someone less than the V-tail.

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy129/bird__photo/Fiji/scan0001-1.jpg

Of the mechanical checklists used - personally prefer the old Saf-Go flipup/flipdown ones to the roller blind ones for single pilot ops. Could get more on a roller blind, but you pretty well needed a co-pilot along just to read it so you didn't miss things if you relied on it. Not many memory items in a Twotter, and most times now with two pilots, each has a double sided laminated card one in their side pocket. (They also make handy clip-on sunshades if you have the rail inside the screen).
The old Saf-Go were handy in a Baron though to not forget some things.. See in the latest Aviation Trader that APNG are looking for some of the old ones.

Frigatebird you're not wrong about the old SAFGO checklists - I have one in my Bonanza - and APNG can go fck themselves, its staying in my Bonanza:E

I found my SAFGO gathering dust on a shelf in a flying school at YBCG - they didn't want it so I grabbed it - back in the early 90s you could still buy them new - I bought one for my C185 - I heard the manufacturer stopped making them due to a liability suit.:ugh:

Every Talair aircraft had one (with aircraft specific check items - mine is personalised for my Bo) and, in my view, it was a major reason why we could leap from an Islander to C402, Twotter and Bandit - sometimes in the same day - safely.

I have used the roller blind check lists in a number of aircraft both single pilot (C404) and two pilot (Dash8) and they worked well. You had to be disiplined to never go past an item until it was actioned. Do that and we never had a problem. Like everything else you had to have a system and be trained to use it.

yip, agree witht that. When I wazza kid you could hear a radial most days, DC 3's, Carabous, Ag machinery. I consider myself lucky to have flown radials a bit on the AG side, I think Drom's are the only radial working for a living these days and maybe still an odd thrush or Tractor?

My Dad told stories about Oakey like that after the war. Then a big hole was dug and they were dozed in. He got a Willeys jeep, and a couple of Army Ducks which he pulled the floatation gear off and built flat bodies on to cart bagged grain to the Dumps from the grainfarm. An uncle had a Boomerang fuselage on his neighbouring farm that I used to play in as a kid. Another early memory was of Charlie Russells first Bonanza into Australia. Quite radical with a V-Tail then. The only photo I have of it is from an early magazine.

P.S. Just for interest, photo of an Army Duck used for amphibious net fishing on the beach at Southport, Northern England, May '83

Some of the story
I biked 20 miles round trip in the weekends to get in amongst this lot
The old Corsair had silica gel plugs and inhibiting oil in it
They cranked the old bugger over after 16 odd years and it blew out a huge cloud of white smoke and settled into a steady idle. Magic

Used to be a place on the old Oakey Rd west of TWB with a collection of old WW2 airframes.....there was a Canberra against the front fence can't say with certainty what the others were but I believe there was at least one P51 and other paraphenalia.........used to nick the old mans pushbike at crack of dawn on saturday and ride out there, spend a few hours digging around the paddock and playing Biggles in the cockpits. Got a few floggings for wagging the lawn mowing etc, but was worth it.

From your photos, its easy to see why not many live Inland other than the miners and a few hardy cattlefolk. Australia with its area of 2,966,200 sq.miles just pipps the 48 Contiguous States and Washington D.C. with its 2,959,481 sq.miles (without the Great Lakes water areas) of the U.S., but we don't have a river like the snow fed Mississippi running down the Centre. The Boat People don't go there on arrival either. Only go that far when I visit my cousins, the pelicans, when the surfs up on Lake Eyre.

An easy one - where is it?

Looks like fun Mr Wocky, Ultralights when was that Bankstown one taken? It's been a little while since I was there but bloody hell, if it didn't have that little hill there and those hangers on the southern side I wouldn't have recognised it!

That one would be near Brizzy in Jaba's neck of the woods. All Melbourne hangar doors are closed at the moment due to this crappy weather. If it's not raining, it's 40 degrees.

A clue for this one, Victoria. Observant viewers will be able to see a critical feature that will tell almost anyone where this is.

It's North West of the City, with CBD in view (top left of pic). It's a private strip just east of Riddells creek, however I've never noticed it until today. Lots of low-level airspace in that area, the Radar controller was watching me very carefully I suspected; he called for a random "radio check" at one stage :-) (his words)

Some info to cry in your beer about.....Whilst doing my CPL I worked in the hangar at Schutts at Moorabbin in 58/59. Three Mustangs were converted to civilian register...UWB,AUB,WAS. One day I was looking through the file of one of them and here was a reciept from the Dept of Supply for 250 Quid for 1 Mustang..total time 900 odd hours.

Also another reciept for a zero hour, inhibited and crated Merlin engine....10 quid!!
