The shop behind is the Compulsory Ice Cream Stop!

Sorry FB..........you will have to dig deeper!

Hey Frigatebird, how's the SLuG going? Many many hours in that machine.

More importantly, how's Judy from the shop going? Some great times spent flying in and out of that strip.

Xmas day a few years back I saw a guy do his best to get a C185 to sit on It's nose. Unsuccessful thankfully, but he did do a good number on the prop!

Ah,good old Tangalooma. The trees used to very tall from the beach to the position of the current windsock. Also at the northern end.

Fully loaded Partenavia, patches of soft sand & the trees looming large in the windscreen. Sphincter puckering was the only thing that got clearance over eucalypts.

Went allright to Emerald and back on a private flight. Even got the old Garmin 100 to work, which helped with down low dodging the Cbs that the RFDS and QLinks and Jets were diverting 30 miles left and right of 'ROUTE' , and holding for in different places, as they were stacked for arrivals into Bris.

Jamair
Was referring to Island Airways actually. Run then by Don Adams from his strip at Aeroasis at Hervey Bay (since closed and subdivided). His partner, Sir Reginald Barnwall, built the resort at Orchid Beach in the Samoan style (having spent time working there, and setting up Polynesian Airlines, before settling here) and would refuse permission for our small operation to come in. Most of our flights were to Bogimba, Yidney Rocks and Happy Valley for the store, and Eurong anyway. At the time Island Airways had the distributorship for Islanders for Australia and the South Pacific, they brought the first one into the region. They sold out later to Snow Richards of UnionAir, Toowoomba, and Reg went to Rainbow Beach and built the strip there. Unionair hit their straps with the sand mining shift changes from Hervey Bay and Maryborough daily, in Twotter's and Tri's to Toby's, but lost the race to build a strip at Noosa for a commuter service. We did some limited shift changing from our strip at Noosa in 6 and Islander onto the beach just south of the Cherry Venture for one small sand mining operation for a while, before and after the commuter runs to and from Bris.

The picture of the Constellation take me back to the late eighties when I happened to be in Miami, Florida. Nearly every evening at dusk, a Constellation freighter would depart Rwy 05. If my memory serves me correctly it was heading for South America, and as it flew over, quite low and obviously very heavy, it trailed flames from its exhausts. I can still see and hear it now. Great pictures, thank you.

This video is something that could be considered as part of "historic heritage"

It is the first solo flight done by woman in military jet in Serbia. As far as I know it is also first woman military jet solo flight in ex-YU region(probably even wider region) .
The aircraft is Soko G-4 Super Galeb - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G-4_Super_Galeb)

Flight was executed at Batjnica military airfield ,LYBT, near Belgrade,Serbia, at the end of decembar 2010. Voice behind belongs to squadron leader who "remind" her about, speed ,direction, stay calm and so on....

In about 1971 the FTDK and I visited that strip as passengers...we had not yet commenced aviating [prob. in DDN]...

The owner of Dulacca West put on a 10 gal keg for Betty Windsor's birthday which six of us did our best to honour.....

Next day he went back to the strip and did his three circuits in the C172 for his 12 months "currency"....which was all that was required in those days apparently.

I distinctly remember he didn't even kick the tyres...[or walk around ,drain fuel, check oil]...just got in started up and flew three circuits.....

I suppose there are still a few people who do that....

ABX - I have found the Lake Eyre Yacht Club (seriously!) site to have the most current and reliable information (see Lake Eyre Yacht Club (http://www.lakeeyreyc.com)). If you are serious about flying out there, I recommend that you get in touch with Trevor Wright from Wright Air. He runs a fleet of sight seeing aircaft from William Creek and will give you information about some local 'procedures'. He is a really nice bloke and very helpful, but please only bug him if you are actually going.

Thanks Jaba! :ok:

ABX: Lake Eyre is at approx 75% capacity at the moment and filling! The western creeks and rivers (Neales and Peake) have also been contributing to the lake this year feeding the most water since 1989. More is on the way from the west after 135mm fell this weekend around Oodnadatta! The floodwater around Bedourie is amazing and the Eyre Creek and Diamantina are swollen! Birdsville is OUT OF AVGAS for anyone thinking of going in there and all roads are cutoff, not expected to be open for roughly another 3 weeks. This water is starting to flow into the Goyder Lagoon area now and although its hard to tell exactly, will still probably be a 4-6 weeks before entering the Lake. Kalamurina Station have 2 massive levy banks between them and the Warburton River but Mark is in the process of moving a make-shift house and as much as possible up onto their highest sandhill. Yesterday the Cooper Creek was reading 5.7metres over the causeway at Innaminka (and all the septics were overflowing into the hotel :uhoh:). This water is slowly heading down towards the Birdsville Track although the punt is not yet in use again. Maintenance is being done on the punt in the anticipation of launching again soon! Lake Eyre South is completely full and sitting at a depth of around 2.5metres. Rumours are rife that the Lake will reach 1974 status, but time will tell! Hope this helps...will post photos soon!

The reason the aircraft is on the east apron was it has been having some repairs there after it's engine failure/forced landing in SA this time last year. Dennis Wisby and his fellas have done a great job and they were all a bit sad to see JTM depart. I took several for a quick circuit before departing for Aldinga-the 10-12kts quartering tailwind on 21R was 'exciting':

The CofG is a long way behind the main wheels on a 195-it hates quartering tailwinds.

The landing on 14 at Aldinga was MUCH less exciting. As I lined up on 21R I told the engineers "hey guys don't want you to worry but the last thing I landed was a 777 and I haven't flown this thing in two years":E

If I were a Dr I would have awesome bed side manner:ok:

One was an ex AG pilot and remarked when we got back that had I told him I was a 777 pilot before we went he wouldnt have gone for the ride:}

One is an Indians Head - and the other has Champagne Pools.
Somewhere in the South Pacific.(Where else?)
The story.....? just an old fella's musings..

Enjoyed a run in the Cessna today taking a young German lad who had just got his RAA Instructors Rating, and his fiance, for a run inland over part of a handy National Park that had spring fed pools where the gullies came off the mountains. Told them the story of when I did joyflights over the nudist beaches on the Sunshine Coast a long time ago, so we had to look close at the people cavorting in the pools today to see if they were in the nuddy too....
She was rapped seeing her dads place, and the neighbours from the air , so that made me feel good too..

Frigatebird

Chuck had a camera attached to his headset that has a much wider angle lens than mine. I think if he posts some of his video you will get a good look at the dash and interior of the "Big C"!

I think Chuck had about 30 min total in the big, round-engined Cessna on our arrival at Parafield, so I thought it would be fun to score his take-offs and landings.

He had take-offs pretty well nailed from early on, and across 7 landings he averaged 7 on a 1 - 10 scale with a range of 6 - 8. The 6 was his first landing at Parafield after giving the engineers that repaired the bird a ride. That was with an initial 10-12 kt left X-wind that became a quartering X-wind as he arrived on short final. The initial touchdown looked nice but the roll-out got a bit interesting. "Better him than me", thought I!

From what I hear, his landing back at Echuca after dropping me off at Essendon may have scored a 9 for a near perfect tail-low wheeler on the bitumen - in front of lots of pilots, included the other five C195 pilots that were present.

All up, some nice flying in what were at times quite difficult conditions.

Good one Chuck ! :ok:

Will post some pics later of some beautiful machines.

As for landings.....well lets say that both Chuckles and myself used up all our 8 and over scores before the trip home.....between us we lowered the score average a little.:suspect: I could not even manage a good one this morning after relocating from YRED to YCAB:sad:.

Maybe a weeks sleep might help.

Three of us agreed that was one of the best boys weekends in a long time!

Chimbu chuckles
4th Apr 2011, 02:36
Yeah it was a great show with some awesome restorations and great flying.

The C195 is a great machine. Big comfortable...burbles along at 21/1900 at 130kts down low and maybe 136kts up higher-say around 7000'-burning around 60lt/hr...not Bonanza efficient but then with her presence who cares.

The rudder looks a little lacking in area but it's at the end of a long arm so quite effective. The CofG is further aft than most taildraggers so it's a little more twitchy than 180/185s but not horrifically so. Having said that I would have preferred my first landing in 2+ years to have been in more benign conditions:eek:

If anything I was sitting a little close to the rudder peddles and over controlling-but got her stopped safely.

I logged about 5 hrs over the course of the trip and, as Lee mentioned, the conditions were never what you would call benign, but not awful either. Just windy enough to make you have to work at it. JTM has 'soft' leaf spring gear which is a little more forgiving than the harder variety. All in all, like nearly all taildraggers, and certainly all of the larger examples of the breed, she is a challenging, and gratifying, airplane to fly. I think with another 10 hrs or so in a reasonably short time frame I would be more consistent- but that isn't going to happen until Tim and Jen leave it in SEQ for a while later in the year. It was nice to be complimented on my last landing at YECH in front of a big crowd of pilots, 6 or 8 of whom were 195 pilots, plus the public and with a nervous passenger in the back-those circumstances usually have 'fck up' written all over them:ok:

Then I hopped into the Retard Vehicle and flew it to Dubbo - rounded out a little high and dropped her in from a foot or so-I blame Jaba:}

I then had the great pleasure of watching Jaba fly night/IFR back to YRED...and be mesmerized by the landing lights and drive her in:ok:

We all do that from time to time-I loosened a couple of oxy masks in a 767 that way several years back:uhoh:

The AAAA puts on a great 'do' and I look forward to attending more-especially when I get EZU back in the air in a year or so.

When I get a chance I will throw up some vid from the 195.
