VH-XXX No 2. St Thomas US Vigin Islands?

VH-XXX
26th Dec 2011, 11:26
Indeed it is St Thomas. Was inspecting a very nice yacht when it taxied past, my two favourite things at the same time, both float and both are ridiculously expensive to own and operate.

The runway in the pic is probably a couple of hundred miles from there.

The US and British Virgin Islands would be interesting GA destinations from the US, not ridiculously far over water but yet would be an adventure to get there. Like a stretched Florida Keys.

'Sydney Haulage Terminal', Bellevue St., off Princes H'way at Sydenham, will get you right up next to the fence, RWY 16R, on short final.

Just across the Cooks R. tributary that 'flows' into the main river, from the actual threshold.
It used to be OK in the 'old days' for access. Don't know about these days, but you could explore it.

How about at Bankstown Airport, do you guys reckon I would be allowed to hang around the scare chair for abit? Or maybe go up into the tower and get some shots? I probably have to ask the controllers themselves, but I'd rather know here before I go to ask them.

The last 3 pictures look like Dalian, China. The landing is the "offset" ILS onto RW 28.

Pontius
5th Jan 2012, 02:34
FL610, no mate, not RCTP. Think mainland China :)

Capt Chambo, you score 1 point for Dalian (that being the photo with the houses on the other side of the runway). The landing at DLC Rwy 28 no longer has any offsets, it's 283 all the way (I put that in because I'm showing off that I can now read a plate :8).

So, any takers for the beach location and the hazy landing in China (although that is asking a LOT, unless you actually fly there)?

WWWW, Dale Kerrigan? The Castle? Time for me to break out Google :)

Capt Chambo
5th Jan 2012, 02:47
A closer look at the last pic. makes me think it might be R/W 35 Qingdao/Tsingtao/ZSQD....

Had a "senior moment". Dalian R/W28 has always been aligned, I was thinking of R/W10 which has an ILS offset by 3 degrees to account for a small hill to the north of the runway centre line, it also has a higher than usual minimum, and a displaced landing threshold.

At risk of going completely off topic.... Dalian was very noticeably not WGS84 compliant. This meant that LNAV was notoriously inaccurate for both arrivals and departures. It has become better over the years but still beware.

Yes, enjoyed the approach into savusavu.. Learnt quite a bit over there eg interesting airstrips, weather, overwater flying etc.
Yes, completed those 50 or so hrs and a few training flights at pacific flying school. I also sat and passed my cpl flight test there also (still need to convert it to oz).. Rates were quite reasonable, approx 170/ hr aud solo hire (c172r)

Flew into Savusavu as a passenger on Beechcraft BE-65 Queenair operated by Sun Air. Can't wait to do it for myself one day. I like the idea of hour building in Fiji and may consider doing just that, the experience would be worthwhile. The Savusavu Hot Springs Hotel is the place to stay, and whilst there you can take a casual membership at the yacht club, a great place to sink a few and have a sing along Fiji-style.

That's the problem with having inexperienced flying instructors who have never experienced it themselves! They're too scared to take their students out on anything but CAVOK days.

When I did my licence, most of my instructors were quite experienced, so I got to experience all that crap weather and make my own decisions, but with guidance beside me.

Yep, whenever a rain shower came through MB there was mass panic amongst all aircraft in the circuit to get back on the ground and safety.

As opposed to our CFI who would charge through the school and say 'Get em airborne, get some practice with wet runway ops.' You should have seen his face when there was a wet runway AND a crosswind. The man was in heaven.

Been at least one case I know of where pulling the chute in a Cirrus over water led to a broken back and drowning because they couldn't extricate themselves from the cabin.

The undercarriage provides no cushioning on water and the aeroplane just slams down on its belly.

Been at least one case I know of where pulling the chute in a Cirrus over water led to a broken back and drowning because they couldn't extricate themselves from the cabin.
That would actually be two cases. One broken back and one drowning.

The broken back was compression fractures of the lower vertrabrae and the pilot extracted himself from the aircraft through the window, reached back for his life vest, entered the water and swam half-way to shore where he was met by the first responders. Next day he walked out of the hospital and within six-months was snowboarding. His real medical problem was a brain tumor that caused a blackout that incapacitated him, so he pulled the red CAPS handle after recovering from a high-speed dive.

The second was a conventional ditching by a ferry pilot near Greenland in heavy seas, who was found face down outside the plane with a broken leg. He was wearing an uninsulated survival suit. Helicopter rescuers reached him within 20 minutes according to the investigators. And the plane was still floating.

Current wisdom for water landings in a Cirrus is to pull early so as to prepare for egress. Lots of time (30 seconds per 1000 feet) to prepare passengers, make mayday calls, organize survival and rescue equipment, and brace for impact.

Cheers
Rick

Because Cirrus pilots have an option -- pull the handle and prepare for egress instead of flying the aeroplane!

This good doctor in this situation reports that his performance degraded, his thinking got muddled, and his stress level increased dramatically as he glided down. He told himself and Miami Center air traffic controllers that he would pull at 2000' above the ocean and considers that an important fixation to actually pull the handle.

For more details from Dr. McGlauglin on what happened before, during and after his parachute pull, see this blog:
Early Reflections on CAPS Pull #32 by Dick McGlaughlin in the Bahamas (http://www.cirruspilots.org/blogs/pull_early_pull_often/archive/2012/01/09/early-reflections-on-caps-pull-32-by-dick-mcglaughlin-in-the-bahamas.aspx)

Why I love the Savannah, aka, aluminum parachute. Hold it in a deep stall, 1 stage of flap, and descent rate settles at 600ft/min. Nose high, still controllable. Far more preferred than hitting the deck at 2000ft/min.

Is the 2000 fpm a typo ??. Seems to me a hell of a rate to be coming down. Long time back to the SE days but I seem to remember lower rates of descent during practice and real forced landings. Does the Cirrus just go down like well trimmed manhole cover or does it have forward speed ??.

Curious now, anyone explain (properly).

Is the 2000 fpm a typo ??. Seems to me a hell of a rate to be coming down. Long time back to the SE days but I seem to remember lower rates of descent during practice and real forced landings. Does the Cirrus just go down like well trimmed manhole cover or does it have forward speed ??.A Cirrus under CAPS descends in a level attitude held by three risers attached to both sides of the firewall and a rear bulkhead. After rocket extraction, the parachute fills with air smoothly as the slider allows a regulated amount of air into the canopy. Depending on airspeed when the parachute deploys, the canopy opens fully in 6-10 seconds, less when the airspeed if greater!

Vertical descent under canopy has been measured indeed at 1700 fpm or 17 knots or 20 mph. Engineers suggest that impact on a flat surface would be the equivalent of a drop from 13 feet.

Note that under parachute canopy, there is very little horizontal velocity, just what the prevailing winds can exert on the canopy and airframe, and due to drag, upon impact that is less than the surface wind speed.

So, a Cirrus under canopy impacts with 17 knots of vertical motion and somewhat less than surface wind speed of horizontal motion.

Compare that with a forced landing at near stall speed of 59 knots in a Cirrus. Descent at best glide is 900 fpm, so vertical descent is less but you still have horizontal flying speed to deal with.

Recall that energy varies with the square of velocity. So, if you hit something during your forced landing at stall speed, you have 12 times more energy to dissipate until you slow down. And if you are unlucky to spin at 100 knots or get into a spiral descent of 180 knots, then you have 34 or 112 times more energy when you hit the ground.

Cheers
Rick

But you can direct that energy in the direction you want.:ok:

If you are serious about safety you would bale out with a normal parachute once the aircraft is stabilised by the balistic one.:}

12th Jan 2012, 17:39
Yeah, between having more important things (did I say that out loud?) to soak up the $, a severe lack of block time off, and VERY severe lack of licensed manpower in Oz (there is a bunch of stuff that needs a LAME to do before I can hook in and do more on my own but the boys are so busy they just never get near mine - no matter how many times I ask) the A36 restoration ground to a halt 18 mths back. I did have a months leave planned 7 or 8 months ago AND the LAME lined up but the company cancelled my leave :ugh: I still need to get the new STBD side skins re installed on the fwd fuse before I can do anything else.

I get down to BNE with 5 days free (1 or 2 being weekend when the hangar is closed) - take one look at the aircraft crammed in the hangar and KNOW I might as well kick back and play with the Grandclone (he is an awesome kid) in the morning and fly the Tigermoth/C195 in the afternoon, have a few beers with the boys in the evening and not get stressed - there is just no point.

It got harder still months ago when my company stopped flying to Brissy. Instead of 7 hrs with daily flights it became 13 hrs via MEL and a VB seat to BNE on the two days a week we fly to MEL arriving at 0815..the other 2 days we arrive at 2215 which means no connecting flights to BNE. In early Feb the sched changes and all 4 arrive at 2215:hmm:

You just look at your roster now with 4 days off and several STBYs you USED to turn into LVE and duck down to Brissy and resign yourself to 7 days sitting in asia achieving nothing.

There are a few things slowly falling into place at the moment which SHOULD make 2012 the year when the whole thing gets very nicely back on track.:ok:

I am just awaiting news from a mate in the US about a set of wings off a 1978 A36 which, if as advertised, are undamaged, corrosion free and low time...and about 1/3rd the cost of restoring my wings - not to mention the ENORMOUS time saving.

2 or 3 weeks of solid days could have the fuse finished structurally speaking - and I have some good options for re wiring the old girl for not a whole lot more than the cost of parts, and on a reasonable time frame.

The engine is still all nicely inhibited but before I take it off the ground again I will send it over to YBAF and have the fellas over there re hone the cylinders and give the internals a real close look - it only has 500 hrs on it.

So 'life' has been getting in the way but there is a glimpse of some light at the end of the tunnel:ok:

The Grandclone, so named by FTDKer, turned 2 on 4th January...and HE thinks I walk on water:ok:

what he needs is to get a head start on the future, a small diesel engine in the nose, turning an electric generator, powering 2 electric engines on the wings, Chevy volt style. and Sonex aircraft have a few electric engines the size of the main wheels in diameter that are the equivalent of 150 Hp.

actually i have been thinking of building a savvy to operate like that, small 2 cylinder diesel turning a small generator, powering an 150 hp electric motor, now with a small diesel, and 110Ltrs useable, and a fuel burn of just over 5 ltrs/hr. and a 150 hp max in the savvy airframe, climb like a scalded cat, loiter for 22 hrs, and land in 50 mtrs!

The Mitchell floods are the worst in living memory and the water is still rising. The rain has been constant, non stop for days.

I had 5 sparkys get through to St George via Surat going to Mungindi the scenic route. Can't get in via Goondi or Moree.

I might be taking out food parcels to them next week. Plenty of work to keep them occupied before they get out again;)

6am edit....it still pouring. Around Mitchell the gauges are still rising:eek:

Poor old Mitchell, they're just going to be wiped off the map.

The warning for the Maranoa River as at 6am this morning:

MARANOA RIVER: Major flood levels are rising at Currawong, with river levels at 5am Friday measuring 10.75 metres. This is the highest level on record, higher then the 1956 peak of 10.66 metres. Further rises are expected. At Mitchell (manual gauge) major levels continue to rise, with the river at 5am Friday measuring 9.35 metres. Levels of 10 metres are possible today. This level is higher than the 1956 river peak of 9.26 metres. Major flood levels continue to rise downstream at Springfield with levels over 11 metres today.

And to think, this water is only going to end up at St George in a couple of days time....

Funny buggers.......no the food parcels will be to keep a gang of Sparkys working hard.

Mind you towns like Wee Waa and Dirranbandi could be in for trouble....You could insert the word LAKE in front of the town name and be rather appropriate if the levee is swamped :ooh:

XXX......... nahh don't think so, It was a pretty funny set of circumstances during a really distressful time for many. That came about from just phoning a friend to see how they were, and rather than them needing help, they asked the town. Date Roll it was...and bug spray. I think the Aerogaurd was more important.

Yes, poor morno saw the sunrise well before he got into bed. And as such, morno has only just gotten out of bed too.

Judging by what's going on out west, could even be another long night yet....

185, good luck to everyone in the 'Ville. I remember in 2008 how anxious everyone was when the river was coming up and that peaked a lot lower than it's supposed to this time!

Hi Ex-FSO Griffo,

"Give you a 'thrill' when that 'let go'? http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/src:www.pprune.org/get/images/smilies/confused.gif"

Yes, it certainly got my attention, but it was a lot less dramatic than you'd imagine. I had a magneto let go on a Cessna 310 and its failure was associated with a lot more vibration. Still, this was an interesting day. :)

Cheers

Thanks all for your kind words. And surprised myself how well the shot came out
sometimes it just all gells, and I nearly missed this shot this morning. Had the mowing crew out this morning to mow RWY 11/29 strip and afer I made sure all the guys had cleared the strip and then got into a position to take the shot the aircraft was virtually lifting off. And didn't realise until I got it onto the computer did I see how well the prop vortices came out, pure luck!!
This particular King Air is one of the newer residents on the YTWB field, currently making 10 King Airs now based at YTWB. The goal is to try and get shots of all the King Airs in Action. Wish the weather would play nice at the moment.
