Rock festival is at Phillip Island. GO Airlines CanadaAir Regional Jet is in Honolulu, yep good guess. Nice little aircraft 50'ish seats. Long takeoff run, but climbs steep out like a fireman.

Nice guess.

Warbirds are Nellis Airforce Base in Nevada, pictures enclosed, complete with Snipers on the roof ready to pop a cap in the a*rse of any unsuspecting airshow visitor who gets too close to the Stealth figther. To be honest, I think it was a little over the top!

I remember one of my instructors being involved with the test flying of them in the very early 80s, I think...many, many engine failures were had usually just airborne...I can't for the life of me remember what it was or the fix.

I have actually never met the owner of the Hangar, only spoken to him on the blower. sadly i have forgotten his name..., but it is at Hoxton park, and there are 2 Opticas in the hangar. love to fly one of those, wonder if the vis would be any better than the Vamp?
http://Pamuva1.smugmug.com/photos/124990332-M.jpg
as for the Vampire engine, mine is powered by a Rotax 503, pretty bulletproof little engine..
the early 80's ones were powered by the Solo 210 engine??
the new ones now have a 55 hp HKS 4 stroke engine, as for the reliability of this engine, im unsure.

VH-XXX
7th Feb 2007, 09:52
The WLAC is a "White Lightning." Quite a fast machine when equipped with the right engine. When photo was taken it was Vic registered so not sure why it was in Cooly.

The Optica's belongs to Peter Waterhouse from memory. Not many of those around either. The story goes that he was offered big money for them years ago by the factory because they stopped making them and because he owns them they have to keep supporting the aircraft in terms of parts etc, as part of some English law / agreement. The result is that they are apparently worth a hell of a lot of money.

They are quite a noisy machine when airborne too.

Well there wuz,

C401, C401A and C401B wivout a cargo door. 300hp engines.

The C402 was the only shortnose version wiv a cargo door, then the '69 C402A and B and on got the door and the pinnochio treatment, '72 on they got square windows and a bigger cabin till '79 then the C402C got the 325hp engines and wet wing. The Pilot crew door was always an option.:ok:

And running alongside them as early as '68 was the 421, same fuse and wing as the C402 375hp and the from '70 the C414 same as but with 310hp.

It is Aurukun circa 1977 or so. It was taken from the first flight off the "new" runway when it was still bauxite. You can just see the end of it in the top left of the photo.

Only problem with the short-nose 402 was a lack of baggage space. Talair actually had another short-snout that ended its days at Lake Murray. An over-zealous cargo-boi loaded lots of welding rods in the nose locker, and it simply never rotated.

The pilot survived, and I believe has recently returned to PNG - AGAIN!

Chimbu chuckles

When he returned last time, must be 12+ yrs ago, he went down to DCA office and had them take BN2 OFF his licence...this of course terribly coonfused the fella behind the desk...but with his palm liberally greased (a 'Somare' I believe) he duly complied.:D

Pinky certainly some were very lovely, and lots of fun:E , but the cutest were pretty thick. The same FA who lept up to see if the strobe really was flashing out her eyes also bolted into the cockpit of my Bandit one day ex Rabaul-Buka seconds after I had roared past one of the young fellas in a BN2 a wing span or so away and breathlessly said "Chuck...how did he do that?"

The fishing sure is spectacular. It's the only time in my life I have seen a 40 pound barramundi. The bloody thing was bigger than me at the time.

It was caught by a guy called Josiah who hailed from Vanuatu (New Hebrides back then). Nicest guy you could hope to meet and very generous with his fish. Not so generous with his daughters...

It's funny, I hated the place at the time but it looks really good from 30 years away.

Wasn't Lake Murray, it was an airstrip on the Fly, south of Kiunga but I don't recall the name. The nose locker was loaded with hessian bags of nuts and bolts whilst the pilot was distracted. If memory serves me correctly, a generator tied down inside kept going when the C402 stopped, exiting the aircraft through the side!

Think you mentioned P2-GKB? That was the first C402, bought new by TAL in 1968, in anticipation of the first Reg 203 exemption to conduct RPT operations.

I've searched the internet for a map of the Fly to look at airstrip names but come up with zilch. I can "see" the strip in my mind, short name, not Obo (I don't think) but south of Obo. That prang was pre 1984, so over 20 years ago. I don't recall who the pilot was but from your reference to a stutter, I'm sure it wasn't W-w-w-w-warwick - at that time he was restricted to Islanders, having shortened a C402's prop blades on the runway at Port Morbid. Besides, I seem to recall the pilot became the subject of Junior's vented spleen and ceased to be employed nano seconds after the prang! :}

Tinpis, you forgot GKF which Bobby pranged at Brugham and SAB ex Sepik Air Charter - which became Sub the Ramu River. WDB and MWD were originally Masling's, recovered from a hangar fire. WDB was contracted to Dillinghams for a few years around 1970, McChook in command.

There were nine C402s all together including the ex M@cair aircraft.

Found it!! :ok: :ok:

The airstrip that C402 went bush was:

SUKI
08.02.97
141.43.50
SUKI 3 15/33

650 m

Obo was too short - only 487 meters.

Yar, nice panel for VFR work.

Ergonomics? Let's see: Stick between legs, flap lever back over left shoulder, throttle *down* between legs (and no friction nut), hand operated brakes and (IIRC) separate lever for elevator trim....hmmm. Flown *lots* of types of planes (left stick, centre stick, side stick; throttle - left right or centre; finger brakes, heel brakes, toe brakes etc.) and I can truthfully say I have never seen an arrangement quite like it when setting up for circuit entry and landing in turbulence. ....... probably shouldn't hijack the thread!

J430
7th Mar 2007, 12:13
notimtams

few corrections

centre stick, right hand, flap....electric, throttle left hand (between legs) and friction nut not needed, trim is seprate and no electric trim, but its ok where it is, ....now the brake is a bit awkward but hey!

Maybe you would find the NG version nicer to fly. All circuit/downwind is all together, Carb heat (left of pic), fuel pump, flaps and ASI all in one area and directly in the line of vision for landing.

Certainly never been a problem and I must say nicer than a C172 or Piper cockpit to use, especially with charts and plans etc. So much more usable space! Maybe you remember some older smaller types......

Back to the pics then!

NOtimTAMs
8th Mar 2007, 06:43
Fair cop J... centre stick. Will stand by the flap lever statement for the Jab model I flew at the factory quite some time ago, though! Interesting flight, too - from the RHS in a plane where the L & R wings did not share exactly the same coincident angle! Me, I like to see the throttle position.....but each to his own, as they say in Tasmania. :)

you are quite correct, a new C172 with the G1000 would be nice, and to be fair they do fly nice the old girls! But my motivation was probably not so clear, meaning the stick and ergoniomics. No yoke and throttle / mixture to get your charts and plans tangled up in.....dont try and tell me it does not happen, everyone I know comments about how much free space I have!

And yes at maybe $400K the new C172 will be nice, but even so, and i am not sure they realy get the performance figures (note website does not quote speed at 60% power) lets compare. Max speed 123kts V over 130kts, climb 720 V over 1000, Fuel...30+LPH v 20LPH, weights usable 360 V approx 335-345 (note if range is compared comparable kg for kg), TKOF dist 288 v 200.........

Sure the C172 would be nice if you give me one, but bang for buck at hourly cost of $40 V way more, and I have more load speed climb....I put up with the throttle in a funny place away from my charts:}

OK biased rants over lets see some more great pics, I promise to behave for a while:E :} :E

#1 Home Hill
#2 Cherribah
#3 Innisfail
#4 Walsh's Pyramid

Man I gotta start looking out the window more!

#1 - I took one look and thought, "that's one of those shingle bed rivers in the South Is of NZ". Forget the fact that it is one of the most characteristic bridges in Qld, and I have flown over it dozens of times!

#2 - landed there a couple of dozen times, admittedly not for 20+ years so I am not being too hard on myself for that one.

#3 - only go there once a year to do my IR renewals, although Cowboy Bob doesn't like me looking out the window for those. Otherwise I fly over the place enroute to YBCS a maybe 6 times a year, but that's IFR and Innisfail is invariably clagged in to the deck!

#4 - must learn to pay more attention. Driven past the thing a dozen times.

Just for everyones general knowlege I have since found out what the Experimental Jet ws that was posted by me the other day. It is in fact a 3/4 replica of a Grumman Panther, built by a guy in Brisbane.

First amateur built jet in Australia!:D

First flight was 1st of April 2006 in Kingaroy. Found an article in the SAAA mag from Aug/Sep 2006. I understand it was a bit of a handful until some CofG issues were sorted (rumour only). But it seems to fly well fast and slow now!

Yes the lovely Rosie is still there, I paid her a visit not that long ago. But she was never in the old town. I think you might be confusing her with Trixie, the lady Rosie took over the business from. Sadly both Trixie & her husband Don passed away within a month of each other last year.

The shot of the airfield is some tin pot town on the border between Pakistan and Afghanisatan. The picture didn't do it justice because it was a lot steeper than it looks and finished at the mountain. Definitely a one way strip!

TCU,

No worries, just a guess! It all looks much the same N of PH anyway, flat brown dry... Driven to Broome and back twice, never again!

Cheers,

Nice photo slackie!!

Few lasers, and of course the venerable pitts up the end! The black laser in the forground looks real nice. Love to have a go!! :}
