hey Dr:8 ya can't carry as much,go as high, as far or as fast as that twin kero burner. I figure that in oder for you to go the same distance with the same amonut of bums as a B200 for Eg you would burn a hell of a lot more gas than me. How he says? Well you can carry 5 bums right? (excluding you) & a typical B200 in high density seating could carry up to say 14 (little japs:)). That's nearly 3 times the amount of bums than you can carry. Lets see now you would have to do the same trip as me 3 times, meaning 5 legs. Typical 300 nm trip one way, takes you say 2 hrs roughly. That's 10 hrs flying to get the same amount of bums to this mythical destination @ say 55 LPH= 550ltrs. I do the same trip once & use just over 400 ltrs. That's a lot of gas for you Dr:8 & I'll be on the way home when yr just bringing the last 5 up !:E Soz for the drift but if you must fly a SE then ya gunna have to work hard at it Dr:8:E

Just a quick question about my last photo and I dont want to get into a pprune fight about it but I'm interested to know other ppruner's perspective on whether they think this is still VMC. I know what the rules are so don't chastise me for that, I just want to know if I did this on a CPL flight test, would I fail due to proximity to cloud. The way I see it, it's almost impossible to accurately judge distance horizontally and only mildly easier to judge height from cloud. Getting on top saves fuel and might even pickup a stronger tailwind so I'm doing whats best for the company and I'm not entering cloud on climb or descent (though I may get a touch closer to them).
Any (positive) feedback??
Thanks
cfOt

If you want to save fuel for the company you could back it off from combat power a little and play with that red knob. :)

Sunfish
30th May 2008, 22:00
Should be at 7500 if you want correct altitude for heading and want to be 1000 ft clear of cloud, that is of course if there is no airspace LL to run into.

Creampuff
30th May 2008, 22:13
Looks to me like aircraft in the last picture is not at or below 3000’ AMSL or 1,000’ AGL. Looks to me like less than 1000’ feet vertical separation from the tops of that cloud. Perhaps the aircraft was on climb. But then there’s the horizontal distance rule….

I think the practical test is: If an opposite direction climbing IFR popped out of the cloud, would the PICs have time to see each other and take avoiding action?

On a different subject, perhaps that EGT should have been flagged U/S…..:E

Yes EGT was US so I was leaning by ear and I thought I'd be generous with the richening after hitting peak. No excuse for the throttle!
These were taken on different days and the second was climbing through 7500 wondering if I could level off as the constant pitch isn't as efficient at 9500 I ended up cruising at 5500 below it all, in the bumps.
Just thought I'd get some opinions from people who knew.

So what's wrong with the ruddervators Doc?

Early, but quite widespread skin cancer! Filaform corrosion - generally occurs on magnesium skins, such as those on the ruddervators, when not appropriately prepared prior to painting.

So they have had dermal abrasion and chemo and will get the cosmetic makeover this week and refitted to the FTDK.

Wally, this is very early and not structural at all. Once the paint is removed it cleans off with a wire brush and chemical treatment. The airframe of the FTDK is very clean - corrosion wise.

This thread is not about rude slagging of others its more about some fun and laughter............SOMETHING I know one of the MODS wants to see continue. (there is a hint there)

Yep, as soon as the problem was pointed out to me by an observant Ppruiner, I had the wings checked.

Turned out to be loose wing bolts allowing the wings to flex upwards thus wrinkling the skins.

Couple of turns with the torque wrench and she's good as new!

Ultralights, whilst I am not real experienced in flying ultralights, having a grand total of only 38 hours in them, I have flown the following ultralight types: the Jab, the Lightwing, a Foxcon Terrier and a Saddler Vampire. The Jab was without doubt the worst aircraft I have ever flown. Obviously a lot of poeple love them and more power to them, but I simply hated the Jab and if I never set bum in one again it will be a day too soon!:\

The Lightwing on the other hand was simply one of the funnest (is that a word?) aircraft I have flown. Low and slow and around the trees without a care in the world.

Quote:
I have flown the following ultralight types: the Jab, the Lightwing, a Foxcon Terrier and a Saddler Vampire.
so what did you think of the Vampire? Ultralights:

Well not a bad little machine. A little heavy on the controls and had a "funny" feeling in the rudder pedals trying to achieve balanced flight although I think this would undoubtably come with time in the machine. It did respond nicely to control inputs and I believe they are aerobatic or at least stressed for aerobatics? One thing though was takeoff. The brief I had before the flight was to give a "genuine" tug on the control column at about 45kts to get the aircraft into the air. At first I moved the stick back but the nosewheel didn't seem to want to lift, a bit more of a tug and then it leapt into the air.

I did only get to do 30 minutes in it and I am sure all the the above would become familiar with more time. It was strange but it was a delight to fly! What is your experiences, I believe you fly or own one?

Cheers
Mr B

Ultralights
6th Jun 2008, 10:34
yep, i fly and own one, one of the original skywise built ones, mine was built in 81! and has done just over 500 hrs..

it is true about take off and landing, both are pretty unusual.. the reason being is that the vampire has a symmetrical aerofoil (perfect for inverted flight) but unfortunately when on the ground, it has a negative AOA, so as you accelerate down the strip, its pushing itself harder into the runway.. hence requiring a decent pull on the stick to get airborne. but once it rotated past 0 deg AOA it would jump up catching you by surprise if you are not prepared for it,
this is usually because by the time you figure out just how much of a pull back you need, you have accelerated past 50 to 60 kts! landing is similarly difficult, one the mains touch down, the nose will be forced down pretty hard as the wing comes back down to a negative AOA, this happens quite quickly, and has already resulted in my aircraft having a nose wheel failure on landing, it didnt collapse, but fatigue resulted in the rudder linkage rod shearing on touchdown and no more steering!

yaw is interesting, even though it has twin rudders, they dont have a great amount of movement, and the lack of a rear fuselage makes its "waggle its tail" in rough air. also having a very large elevator and horizontal stabilizer right behind the propellor means power changes require a fair bit of a trim change. but nothing you dont get used to.

even with these traits, it still feels like a very solid aircraft via the stick, flies more like a C152 and not as light and twitchy on the stick as you would expect with something so light. funnily enough, it has more room in the cockpit that sitting in a 152! plenty of shoulder room, and rooms for maps and such.

The former Fox Ranch is in an area now known as the Malibu Creek State Park, just outside of LA. The current google earth pictures of it are quite good you can see the two remaining vehicles which were burned out during the actual fire that went through the area during the filming of the final episode. The helipad can also be clearly seen although it's somewhat overgrown.
The movie version was also shot in Malibu Creek State Park, but it's been so long since I saw it I couldn't be sure if it's the same location as the TV series. The Golf Scenes from the movie were shot at the Malibu Country Club and the football game was shot at Griffith Park, LA
Here's a pic of the outdoor set location on google earth, if you re-orientate it so east is up it tends to look more familiar with the road coming into the camp at the top of the picture.

LHRT or Compressor,

A couple of tech question about KWO for either of you to answer.

1. Just above the Marker panel is a guarded switch, what is that for?
2. Next to the starter switch, there are 2 switches visible, what are they?

I fly a PC12 with an exec interior and we don't have either of the above in ours, so i'm guessing they must be something to do with the Med Kit.

Cheers.

goin'flyin,

(1) is an alternate power source for the stand by AH ( direct to battery ).

(2) 2 switches, there are three switches, the third has been cut off in that fine piece of photography, they are the test switches, the operator saw fit to move them to a more user friendly spot ( pusher, fire and light tests ).

FYI the medical switches are above the electrical brow switch panel.

LHRT,

"the operator saw fit to move them to a more user friendly spot ( pusher, fire and light tests )."

That's one thing about the WESTOPS CP he was always thinking how to best set out an aircraft for single pilot ops. He was also very big on standardising aircraft, which made a lot of sense when you were doing an aircraft swap in the middle of the night!!

LHRT, quick question. How are they going to do the same with the new PC12s as I understand they will be FMS/full glass?

By the way those SANDELS are a good bit of kit aren't they? From memory the only maintenance they required was the replacement of a light bulb every 200hrs.

cheers Sarcs.

Way a mate in WESTOPS explained it to me was that the normal position for a few switches is up on the roof, and it's not somewhere you want to be looking for a switch coming into a black hole approach in the middle of the night, so they moved it!:ok:

LHRT,

Thanks for the reply. Makes sense to move the test switches from down the side of the seat, (or where they on the overhead on KWO?). One i was flying was a 98 model so down the side of the seat, can be a bit of a stretch at times.

Having flown both the Legacy models and the NG, i can tell you from experience, it is not going to be easy for you guys trying to jump from Legacy to Next Gen on a regular basis.

And in keeping with the thread - a photo is now included.

It's a bit of a mystery why they didn't just upgrade the older PC12's to become the same as the newer one's (it is possible), instead of downgrading the newer one's to become the same as the old one's.

The guys who fly the newer (not the NG's) one's don't seem to have any problems with selecting the light switches on when going into black holes.... :ugh:
