Hello Skywagon,

A good one which has been on the market for a lil while is the Panasonic TZ1 with 10X optical zoom and 5 MP. You should be able to pick one up for around $500-600 mark I would say in OZ. If u have any friends in the US u can pick the same one up for US $300 over there which is a lot cheaper.

Good luck

http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q318/dandlroberts/LookingdowntheTapiniairstrip.jpg

For those interested: 915m, 4.5% overall (down then up slope), 3 151' elev.

Not one of PNG's most difficult but a good looker none the less.

Captain Nomad

Got me on a roll now...

A few more from PNG for those interested:

Kora, 600m, 7%, 5 736' elev - don't overshoot 'cos there is nothing to stop you at the end of this strip...
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q318/dandlroberts/Korafromtheair.jpg

Karik (Porgera mine), 1 200m, 5.4% (another down and up slope) 7 463' elev
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q318/dandlroberts/LinedupandreadytotakeofffromKarikPo.jpg

Maramuni, 450m, 6.4%, 5 030' elev - usually a nasty tailwind approach with an updraught blast on short-final just to keep you on the ball
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q318/dandlroberts/LookingdowntheMaramunistrip.jpg

Guwasa, 600m (if you really want the rough erosion at the upper end), 10%, 4 938' elev
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q318/dandlroberts/Guwasa.jpg

Mengino, 600m, 8%, 4 000' elev - 600m starts looking pretty short with a good quartering tailwind on take off - I always liked looking at trees...
http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q318/dandlroberts/Mengino.jpg

Gema, 560m, 10%, 5 250' elev - turbine Islander on approach

Better stop - that's enough for now... :}

185skywagon,

Good question. The highest peak (Mt Wilhelm) is around 14 700' from memory. Plenty of other peaks in the 10-14 000' range. On these highest peaks it is visibly 'alpine' terrain which is essentially terrain with no trees. That is on the occasional exceptionally good mornings when you can actually see the peaks before they get covered in cloud! I don't believe snow is a regular weather feature even at those high altitudes. However I have had one PNG veteran tell me that many years ago he did once sight snow on one of the peaks (I think it was Mt Gilluwe near Mt Hagan?).

Hey Chimbu Chuckles, glad you enjoyed the PNG pics. Great to see some pics of your Bo - looks like a nice machine! I would have to say that in a previous job I had the pleasure of flying around an F33C Bo and it was easily the most beautiful aeroplane I have ever flown. A real pilot's aeroplane. The old V35A in the fleet was a little less perfect - had VERY old questionable avionics and it would get the old tail-swish going in turbulence!

Yep, Kalgoorlie it is - 2002 I think. I did a couple of freight runs across from Qld via there to Dongara and was gobsmacked at the size of those holes. Equally gobsmacked by the call-out fees for fuelling, something that was unheard of in Qld at that time. $40-$60 to pump a couple hundred litres of avgas, regardless of whether the guy was already there or not.

Home of Daisy perchance?
Just noticed that pic. I would have picked it. I spent two years there. ( have a look at the barby on the other side of the track. I built it and it has all of our gangs name in the cement).
Used to know someone was coming an hour before they got there. Bloody great spotlight flashing all over the sky.

Another interesting developement is our clever politicians deciding that the "grey nomads" will provide a cheap way of providing help for our indigenous freinds in the outback.
Can you imagine how long Mr, and Mrs 75 year old city dweller would last at Warburton.(supposing they could get there).
Maybe the "greay Nomads" can go and sort things out in Iraq as well. It's not much different.

There is no 'easy' way there is but one way.

Go to something like www.fototime.com and download the pictures to a user storage library. You then click on the picture in your library and then copy and paste the URL (the bit that starts with www.) to pprune using the boxed 'landscape' icon in the toolbar. When you have downloaded the picture and want to post it here bear in mind you will need to click on it twice...so that the only thing on the screen is the picture...and then highlight and copy the url.

Hey compressor stall,

Simply awesome photo.:ok:

I know where you are based, but where exactly were you in that shot?

A question from a beginner ...

In the pic your props are synced pretty well, does your plane have prop sync? And is it always that accurate?

Or is it just coincidence that the props are synced up so well?

Sorry that my questions are a bit basic.

Cheers,

Glad you enjoyed it. Unfortunately I do not have the GPS feeding position into my EXIF data, but that berg is approximately S69*13' E076* 26', and I was in the other aircraft at 1000' with a 70-300mm lens.

As for the prop sync, yes the aircraft is equipped with prop sync, although it is relatively uncommon in that it is not a master/slave sync. Magnets create an electric current that are fed into a controller that detects phase difference and varies the voltage to the synchronisation unit that then controls the prop governor. You can also turn the knob to pick up the top or bottom of the wave as is quietest.

I presume that they had it on at the time (normal cruise ops) but looking though my photos it is merely coincidence that they are aligned. Of the aerial photos in my files, this one was one of the few that have the props perfectly aligned.

Cheers

Are you serious guys if i could make that up in photoshop i wouldnt be a struggling GA pilot...i have plenty of other shots taken during the missed approach we did...and if you take a look at the freq's in an ersa you will see they are all set in the photo.

Anyone know where i can upload a few photos to so i can post a few of the shots turning into and arriving into Hamo for those who think its fake.

For those interested its taken with a Canon300D with 18-55mm set on M mode with Av set a f8.0 @1/250sec shutter speed.

Those pix don't look shopped to me at all.

Nice photography though, did you experience a little wind into Hamilton Island that day?

Load your pix into Photo Bucket (http://www.photobucket.com) and then use the Insert Image button when posting here on Proon, and you should have no problems getting you pix to appear in your posts.

Although the next morning i did the T/O from Shute and the weather was crappy with about 15kts X-wind from the left and swirling around in the mountains which made for a interesting departure.

Here you take a helo to St Moritz. Nearby is Davos, site of the WEF meeting held recently. We were concerned about being tailed by a Swiss Air Force jet but we managed to avoid getting into trouble with the authorities. Our pax were so impressed with our flight we got a €50 tip each.

Thanks Gaunty.

I think you'll find the same "waggly tail" in any aircraft that was spinning! If it didn't waggle it'd prolly fall off. If students are busy looking for a waggly tail instead of initiating the correct spin recovery then I guess there is more liklihood of a spin related accident!

BTW Trudy is now Trudy Robins, and still going strong here in WA as an independant ATO, a wonderful person is Trudy.:D

Chimbu chuckles
5th Feb 2007, 06:56
I would agree with all that Gaunty...as someone who learned in Cessnas back when they still built them new, and who never sat in a Traumahawk until flying instructors course, I fall into the category of pilots who think the little Traumahawk is a much better trainer, overall, than Cessna's baby.

I still reserve the right to take the piss though:}

Interestingly it was a Cessna 150 aerobat that nearly killed me when it wouldn't recover from a spin...any aeroplane can bight...recovery was well below 500':uhoh:

CFI it was during 'mutual'...we took turns holding it in a spin while the other watched out the back...I think the T tail waggles a lot more than anything else I have spun...spinning it beyond 4 or 5 turns was a hoot too..spin flattened out quite noticeably.

Yes Trudy was just 'living in sin' with Mr Robins in those days:} ...a marvellous instructor and a lovely person.

Chimbu I had a similar thing happen in an aerobat (sparrowhawk conversion with the bigger donk), recovered at about 800 AGL:ooh: I managed to crumple the forward elevator stop on the control yoke.....I was pushing forward that bloody hard:8

Chimbu chuckles
5th Feb 2007, 07:19
My last effort at getting the nose down I shattered the tacho glass over the right hand yoke and ended up way past the verticle and half rolled before pulling out at 500' on the altimeter...just about 3 nm SE of Warragambah Dam...where the terrian is 300+ feet...higher in places:uhoh:

My student didn't notice anything was wrong until I handed over to him, climbing through about 800', and lit a cigarette with badly shaking hands...He noticed I was a little 'agitated' and asked what was wrong...I just pointed at the altimeter as we were still just passing 1000'. A few days later he rang me at home to thank me for 'saving his life'...I pointed out to him I was actually just saving mine:}

404 Titan
5th Feb 2007, 11:44
I too had exactly the same thing happen in a C152 Aerobat out of Cairns in the early 90’s. After about 4 revolutions the spin became very flat. Tried to recover and nothing happened. I shouted to my student to lean forward as I did and I managed to recover just below 1000 ft. Nearly shat myself. For an aircraft that is so docile in the training environment, it bit me that day. I learnt not long after that an instructor at one of our competitors had exactly the same thing happen a few months later in their aerobat. All I could put it down to though was a C of G problem.

Is it normal to fly a little Jab IFR in the yellow without a VOR/DME, ADF and GPS turned off as well as not having the DI & compass aligned?

UnderneathTheRadar
5th Feb 2007, 21:36
VH-XXX
Is it:
- slight disagreement between the compass and the DG (difficult to tell from photo but DG looks to be reading 135)?
- cruising VFR on top with no (legal) means of navigating?

And the 'river mouth' is Lakes Entrance.

UTR

Edit - bugger, beaten to it.... Do I at least get a light beer?

Atlas Shrugged
5th Feb 2007, 22:09
Ooh, looks like it's not in straight and level flight either. The compass is tilted, airspeed is in the yellow and the right foot is buried on the rudder pedal, but the VSI reads zero and the ball is centred

VH-XXX
5th Feb 2007, 22:29
There is one other major instrumentation problem that you are still yet to notice. (Clue - My nickname is Buzz and I drink SUB zero)

I assure you it's totally above board. It was a VFR transit with clearance to 10,000ft (on climb). As much as the cloud looks solid, it was quite scattered so VFR over the top for 5-10 mins max. I was wondering at the time why I didn't get a code though... still not sure.

The GPS is actually turned on and rightly so, there is no VOR / ADF mounted in sight. So, by the letter of the law, for VFR over the top not strictly legal without a positive visual position fix.

The ASI is the old original J400 one and wasn't updated as it should have been. Green arc now extends to 125 knots.

DG is not aligned either. Perhaps the barrel rolls earlier toppled it  :=

It was a requirement for VFR over the top as the solar panel needed sunlight to charge the battery for the DVD system :) Ahhh the joys of a homebuilt.
