Konev, was flying VCF this morning, doing Sylvia's low impact aerobatics, found a hole in the clouds over Westernport big enough for Wing overs, Lazy Eights and Loops. More to follow next week. Understand bids are in for Alpha and I pray the company is sold as a going concern as we have two more on order.

As it's a rebadged Robin 2160, there are a few more than 20.. but we really really do need another (or two); trying to get in on that thing during the weekend is nigh on impossible.

And never mind 60 degree turns.. keep going all the way over. Much nicer :)

Konev: I know.. I fly it too (that same one). However the Alpha 160 IS a Robin - I'm not sure if it's built under license, or if Alpha bought the rights - either way, same aeroplane (to all intents and purposes). Apologies in advance because it's not a picture, but this seems a good topic to post the link in. For those not familiar with the goflying.org site, you can upload saved flights from a GPS and view/share your track, altitude and G/S.

Also, you can zoom in and review track at departure and destination, view it in Google Earth, and there is a "tour"' (replay) function from 1X to 64X.

The log in the link is Jandakot to Parafield of 1228 track miles, G/S of 194 Kts and elapsed time of 6:19 in a single engine Mooney the day after the Red Bull Air Race. Fuel used was 334 litres.

Aaah Pinky, that brings back some memories.
The structure in the background is not a hangar, it's actually the hall where they hold the annual Boulia Dance aka Rythmic Ceremonial Annual Mate Hunt. The airport is a little further down the street.

As for great steaks at the Boulia Pub all I can say is during the two years I was visiting there I saw some really bad food at the pub and some good food. I think they went through three different so called cooks during that time. I ended up going to the place down the street rather than eat at the pub for a while. It's name escapes me now, was it the sunrise cafe or sunshine cafe or something?

The motel at that time was 4 rooms out the back, looking at Google Earth now it appears to have been expanded somewhat. Wonder if the mice are still breeding in the pile of spare blankets on the floor :)

I'll always regret never having taken a camera with me on that run.

After he claims on national TV that he was not really concentrating on stuff out the window, rather adjusting roll bars or brake settings. Now for those who do not appreciate it......this was 2/3's the way into the first lap......what was he doing fiddling at this point of the race and maybe thhose items you adjust in a straight line when you have clear space........Maybe he just thought he was that far back he would not run into anyone.....unless they almost blocked the track:ugh:

I have towed up model gliders before with large R/C planes & we always attached the glider to the CofG point on the tow plane because if connected to the tail the towing model was almost uncontrollable. I see the attach point is at the rear of that 'thing' that's not much bigger than a 1/3 scale tug anyway!:bored:
Anyway would be amazing to see that in action, kind of brings a whole new meaning to 'tap dancing' on the rudder pedals hey!

The wonderful PNG plod sold all their kit to the raskols right?

Nope Tinpis, Not this time anyway. And mustard gets the cigar. Kerau it was.

What happened with the resupply op was that the evening before the flight the Boss, Richard Rowe (may he rest in peace) gave me a briefing for the flight. Upon arriving overhead Kerau I was to do two full circuits and then only land if I felt it was safe to do so. After landing I was to immediately backtrack to the T/O threshold, line up and keep the engines running until a Police Officer showed up. If a raskol appeared I was to 'amscray' pronto!! I was reasonably light and a light morning breeze was in the right direction so a take off uphill was no problem.

All appeared ok when I arrived so I landed, backtracked etc and waited, engined running. And after about 10 minutes (!) a member of the PNG Constabulary arrived toting a worn looking AR15, the semi auto version of the full auto M16 Assault Rifle, and I shut down. He did not appear to be a 'happy chappy' and after exchanging greetings I said as such to him. The conversation then went something like this;

PNG PO; ''Oh Mr Captain, I am so ashamed!''

Me; (Somewhat bemused) ''Oh really?''

PNG PO; ''Yes Mr Captain. I am so ashamed!''

As we unloaded the food and ammo the conversation continued along these lines until;

Me; ''Well, what is the problem? Maybe I can help''

PNG PO ''Well Mr Captain, yesterday my men and I came across some of the raskols we were seeking. I called out for them to stop and when they did'nt I aimed at one and fired two shots at him.''

Me; (anticipating the worst) ''You fired twice at him. And????''

PNG PO; I missed! I am so ashamed!!''

At this point I bit down hard on my tongue and tried desperately to keep a straight face. I think I failed. Dismally!!

I attempted to console him, saying that whilst my knowlege of the AR15 was limited I did know that it was not necessarily the most accurate of firearms and asked if I could inspect it. It was in fact a well worn and used heap of **** and one would have been lucky to hit a 'bull's arse at ten paces' with it.
Upon hearing that he seemed to cheer up a bit.

I then loaded what little there was to return to Moresby, bid him farewell and took off for the return flight.

Jeez, I miss that place and those times!!:{:{:{:{

Yes, it is Petropavlovsk, we used to use it to refuel on the way to Nome, Anchorage and Vancouver.

I thought it was a spectacular airport, with the 11000 ft volcano about 4 nm from the aerodrome reference point. In any sort of weather it made sure that the ILS needles were kept where they should be.

There was also a 17000ft volcano up the track from Petropavlovsk towards Nome, with a few aircraft wrecks on the slopes.

Mother Nature at its best, I enjoyed my time in the area

Jaba,

180HP C172, 256 litre tanks, 120kts @ 35 litres/hr gives over 6hrs + reserves which is way too long for me, let alone the kids! The longest leg was home to YEML, 4hr 34min start to stop.

Only problem is the kids are still growing so it might be the last family trip in a 172 due to MTOW. Will need to upgrade to that Baron that I can't afford (yet).

Hey there Nivo! Just giving ya chain a bit of a jerk! Don't tell anyone, but I probably still have more time in the C172 than any other type. Have flown a couple of near new ones recently - quite impressive. Another one came out of the container the other day (along with a nice looking C170) - I will probably test fly it as well.

That is still a good trip in a C172!

Dr :8

TonKat
27th May 2008, 01:19
Hi there FTDK - just a quick question- does the C170 have a CSU?

Was looking at a photo of the intrument panel after you post about test flying one as I have never seen a c170.

Looks like a classic machine....

ForkTailedDrKiller
27th May 2008, 01:47
Nah TonKat, the C170 is fixed pitch, and yes, it is a classic.

My post above is a little ambiguous. I will probably test fly the C172 but, although I have flown a few taildraggers, the owner of the C170 is more than capable of flying it himself.

Obviously flying a 172 is not big deal in itself, but its the avionics and autopilots in these things that intimidate some of the new owners, rather than the aeroplane itself. So I usually take them on a shakedown ride to make sure all the bells and whistles work.

I noticed 'Solid Axels' in the specs.

I would hope so....(?).......however, is this meant to distinguish the difference between a 'normal' axle and the 'crosswind undercarriage' castoring axles of some of those 170's? i.e. This one goes straight ahead...

I flew a 170 with the castoring 'crosswind' u/c in 'dem good ole days' in WA a few times, and whilst it may have been 'useful' at times, it was a little disconcerting when at the end of the landing roll, to start 'weathercocking' into the wind and end up travelling sideways...or try to use the brakes to keep straight.

Always gave you the feeling that you were about to tip over...but, it never did!

A NICE aeroplane, never-the-less. :ok::ok:
