John MacDonald ( no relation to Jack) let NOBODY near that aeroplane
It didn't even have a jump seat.

I thought you guys might like to see the progress on my Bo - I didn't spend the last 8 weeks on leave in Oz JUST flying Tiger Moths, Chipmunk, the FTDKer, the Retard Vehicle and the AT28D - although I did manage 26 hrs in the above collection of wonderful aircraft. Lots of formation and aerobatics:ok:

The vertical stab is almost finished. New skins we made are awaiting some aerials before being fitted.

http://www.fototime.com/{A0D06B08-EF86-4DF5-9A29-4FC46F5E6DA5}/origpict/Vertical%20stab.jpg

I cleaned all the tar sound deadening crap off the inside of the cabin side skins.

http://www.fototime.com/{33478EB2-89DA-4501-97B9-FE3ACF9F60CD}/origpict/EZU%20port%20cabin%20skin%202.jpg

I made a new aft port side skin for the fuse.

http://www.fototime.com/{6B36DFE2-1B16-4629-9215-8968DA1E7AB3}/origpict/Fabricating%20a%20new%20Port%20side%20skin.jpg

Stripped the undercarriage down to component bits and paint stripped/bead blasted/etch them - well the nose and left main anyway.

http://www.fototime.com/{2CF315D7-B6E8-493C-82D7-1CB719D0CFAF}/origpict/EZU%20nose%20gear%20being%20stripped.jpg

http://www.fototime.com/{F2C70EB1-8A90-4D6B-80FC-68D2A812A10C}/origpict/EZU%20nose%20gear%20etched.jpg

Riveted the new side skin in place. And I stress I RIVETED - yes I am very chuffed that I can now rivet well:ok:

http://www.fototime.com/{7F99A488-FD54-4B37-B6E7-8B00E6F999D7}/origpict/Port%20side%20skin.jpg

Then I drilled off the bottom skin and pulled out the longerons and cleaned them all up. I'll make a new skin for the bottom too.

I'D like one of those Doc, ..with tip tanks please..

(would be better overwater, in event of a ditching easier to get out of with a raft, V tail low on touchdown less drag more survivable - low wing for floatation while evacuating ( Max stepped off the Baron wing onto the helicopter without getting his cowboy boots wet) - extra tankage for them long Pacific miles, easier to load a bike with the double doors for airport to town use - and with the frigatebird forked tail it suits my dress sense)

Yep, the rudder pedals are a giveaway with North American stamped on them. It's a real buzz to pole this for 2 hours from the back seat.

The Caproni is at Tocumwal. belongs to Chris Corrigan and somebody else.

Pic #3 earlier on seems to be an early C172. (before the 172A), I flew one VH MUG way back when it was $10 per tacho hour wet private hire.

There was however a 175 (had a small bump on the cowl for 0-300 gearbox) fitted with an O-360 at Hay somewhere. From memory Pip Borman had something to do with it.

I use Photobucket.

The short answer is I don't really know what I'm doing.

I did note however I resized mine to medium- from memory to fit with the PPRune specs of 640 x 480 pixels, but when I right clicked on the image they came out larger. Don't know how this happened but they must be on the PPRune limit.

Walsh Memorial flying school. http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/src:www.pprune.org/get/images/smilies/smile.gif Are you doing ATC there?

It seems quite a few people feel the need to not read their suppliment or NOTAMs and fly into the Matamata CTR. Some big mean microlight roars out of the sun scaring all the budding aviators. Or something.

I'd say you'd be required to have extremely good posture before you'd be allowed to fly that 175.

Don't you just love those cageable wartime A.H.'s!? That one has some pretty orange markings! (when mine came out because it needed an overhaul and it was cheaper and more modern looking to put a pictorial one in, it left a hole in the panel and coaming I still haven't properly filled.)
One thing I notice about ultralights, they all seem to have a Vertical Speed dial. Wonder how much it gets looked at. Me, I would prefer to have a small A.H. either pump, venturi or electric, together with the T.& B. or Turn Co-ordinator of the other persuasion for backup, if I had limited panel space anyday.

The last one is about 600Nm or so North of Fiji... There isn't much there at all, but the currency is in Australian Dollars.. Just as a wee hint..

Well, if its Funafuti in Tuvalu, then it's changed a bit since I was last there in '98 in a Saab 2000. New buildings, rising sea levels (less land area) etc.

Fiji Air used to take that Heron out to Rotuma, (not 600 miles) then, but that was still part of Fiji.

g'day

I think the Funafuti strip was sealed around 1993 - possibly using European funds. I remember thinking it was an opportunity lost that they did not construct drainage culverts and catchments in order to provide much needed water supply on the atoll. Also lost was the 'grass' playing fiels for soccer and vollyball.
See the Funafuti ladies plaing ball below.

They still play football around the airport - in fact everything is taken down and shifted as we're about to arrive, and probably put back up as soon as the wheels have left the runway! I also have seen Tennis rackets and netball hoops lying around the edge of the runway - so I guess the seal is used for other sports now. :ok:

I think that's the one that made a number of very long flights around central Australia and eventually ran out of fuel about 200 metres short of the Alice Springs runway. It got bent a bit. (the airport fence I think) and the american owner decided to leave it here, but not before he got the cutters into the wiring and removed lots of instruments and radios. It would be interesting to know where it is now. Good to see it got fixed.

Frigatebird - your shot of the popemobile reminds me of the time in the early 80's when whoever was pope then visited Canberra. I was pulled up by the plod at an intersection with the road to Canberra airport as the papal entourage was on its way to the airport. They drove past fairly fast but when the popemobile (the fully enclosed version) went by he was leaning back taking a drag on a smoke. As a tyke I used it as an argument to keep smoking myself.

WCC??? Well oil beef hooked!!
Last time I saw her, she had a wheel up the front (proper) end, and was lovingly owned by a notorious Ppruner from out this way!
That old 182 was nicknamed "Bourbon Charlie Charlie" as the owner had a huge appetite for Bourbon rather than Whiskey (still has actually).
Great to see WCC looking great re-birthed. If aircraft could talk, she would have some good yarns to tell.
I'm sure the Ppruner concerned will be along directly to comment.

A few of WCC when I sold her.
Beachy is correct, she was referred to as Bourbon Charles Charles.
She taught me lots. Love the straight tails.
She was allegedly Bush Pilots first all metal lighty. I think the original rego was BPG or S. The went to Winton Air Charter (hence the WCC rego).
Then she was in Charleville with Bob Goss Westinair about 1962-4.
Bill McMonagle once told me he used to fly it and that it cost 20 quid in Avgas to fly to the coast from Charleville.

Tin,
Buggers got WCC for a low price.:( About 50k cheaper than a 180 at the time.)
They flew it for awhile as a 182 on jump ship duties.
When the time came, they had the parts ready to go for the conversion, and they did most of it themselves.

I think it has an io-550 in it as well. Climbs like mad.
I think it only weighed about 740 kg or something like that.

What I do is 'copy' the photos IMG code (not the HTML code) and then 'paste' it in and it sorts itself out. But for multiple photos I have to go backwards and forwards for each photo.

Approving the new one-way strip in the old coconut plantation on Christopher Skase's leased island where he was building a resort.. Barracuda Point where the reef juts out on the top right of the photo (N.E. side) was a top dive spot, while I got lots of crays on a moonless night dive on the western side (left of photo where the resort went).

My trip today included myself and crew to participate in the San Remo Channel Challenge.

Zoomed into Phillip Island Airport, gravel 22/04 with 3 Robbo 44 choppers operating. Participated in the Channel Challenge, 500metre swim and 2km return run. Takes around 11 minutes for the elite guys.

After that headed into the relatively new National Vietnam Veterans Museum. $9 adult entry. A little different to most museums, the guy on the front desk actually drove the tank and the guy selling the food was the one driving the machine gun. They have a Canberra bomber out back being restored back to flying condition apparently, one of the engines was restored and on display ready for running.

Hi Folks

I've been enjoying looking back a few months through this thread to all the amazing photos and videos. I particularly like all the 180/185/195 photos and adventures, espcially Chimbu Chuckles, FTDK, 185Skywagon, VH-XXX, etc. Frigatebird and nose_wheel_first some of your photos of lightning and the making of the airstrip of Christopher Skase's island are just fantastic. I really appreciate the effort many have gone to in scanning old photos for us all to see. But it has to be Chimbu's videos that take the prize; mate they are just fantastic and you inspire us all with your bush pilot skills and adventures (not to mention hand restoration of a Bonanza, exciting project). Just great, thanks to everyone who upload pictures and videos!

Here is (what I hope are) a few interesting location shots. None of them are out of the way or remote (in fact, a little clue, they're all within 60 nm of Sydney)

regards

Ren

Dave Incognito, you got it in one. I loved flying over the King George Falls... better than the Mitchell falls IMHO.

Reddo... looks like we flew the same planes for the same mob :) Which 207 is that in your photo? I'll hazzard a guess at WOY? And that 210.... EDE or WNI? If it's either they have both had a paint job since then.

Good old Gator.... was an interesting company to work for but I sure loved my time there :)

Beautiful Lizzie pics thanks FB. The Mossie is RS712—TT35—On display today at the EAA Museum. Oshkosh, on loan from Kermit Weekes. In '83 at Auchterader in Scotland she was knocked down to Kermit for 100 G pounds. Ferried over the pond, and now no other airworthy example remains anywhere since the terrible fatal prang of the one in the UK. But that may be rectified soon by a faithful replica project going on in NZ.

The MD Helicopters MD 500 series is an American (http://www.pprune.org/wiki/United_States) family of light utility civilian and military helicopters (http://www.pprune.org/wiki/Helicopter). The MD 500 was developed from the Hughes 500, a civilian version of the US Army's OH-6A Cayuse/Loach (http://www.pprune.org/wiki/Hughes_H-6). The series currently includes the MD 500E, MD 520N, and MD 530F.

Forkie was in town and wanted to get a bit more retarded, so out we go jump in, flash up all the pretty lights (during start they run off the emergency avionics bus & battery) and the master was on already...:suspect:.........hmmm thats not good! And if that was not bad enough Mrs Jaba & I had a 5ish pm departure for Dalby. So with the lack of suitable jumper leads (which are now in the hangar) we were stuffed. Came 5pm and we jumped her off the Landcruiser, screwed all the baggage bulk head back in, and arrived at Dalby 20 min before last light, but with the weather, it was virtually last light. All fired up well this morning:ok: Sorry Forkie!

Charlie Russell was a great supporter of Beechcraft products. At one time he owned a Beech Model 17 Staggerwing (may have been replaced by the G35), and he later progressed from the Bonanza to a Baron. The family still operate a Baron to this day, I believe.

Those rear stairs on the 727 were very useful.
We used to meet canadians who flew over to Adelaide from Melbourne for the day and we would fly them up to Mt Gunson mine, and then back to catch the flight back to Melbourne in the afternoon. I always gave them a latest departure time from Mt Gunson, but they kept leaving it later and later. One day we were very late and I called the Adelaide tower and asked them to advise the airline that I had three passemgers for them. As I taxied past the 727, the tower replied "the company says you're too late", but the Captain said "are you with me or not" so I kicked the pax out and they went up the back stairs which then retracted and the 727 taxied away.
These pax took my latest departure times a lot more seriosly after that.

I know it's not Dunnunda but, inspired by Capson's video link to the guy landing on the logging road I thought I'd go looking for the games we used to play in our toys (when we were young, slim and had hair). During a stint with the septics I spent many a happy hour or two playing on Lyman Road and, fortunately, someone posted a link on UTube to some of our antics. It was quite a lot narrower than it looks, mainly because you had to keep the outriggers on the road and, as LSSs (Landing Site Supervisors), we had to stand in the middle of the road until the last moment to make sure Chuck had the correct line-up.

Well you'd be the first bloke I've ever heard say BH was as boring as bat****, but then again I suppose all the comparatives you drew were pouring chinese tea during their manouvers were they. Chuck Yeager thought he was pretty good but you probably think he's in the same category as BH. Mind boggling!

P51D, have you seen BH fly his routine in the flesh? The problem for me in the company he was keeping at Oshkosh was that it took him so long to actually do anything. Its much better on edited film. His area of operation for his routine is so big because of the radius of his loops, turns etc that you loose sight of him and could go get a cup of tea before he returns to centre stage.

I did not question his skills - just expressed a disappointment in the impact of his routine, in that company - after 20 yrs of looking forward to seeing it!

Interestingly:

"in your face" displays such as the Gee Bee, BD5, Jimmy Franklin's jet engined Waco, and Oracle

The Gee Bee is retired - smart enough to call it quits before it killed him. Don't know about the BD5. Jimmy Franklin is dead! Oracle is smashed to bits!

Maybe that says something about Bob!

P51D.. You can't see someone pouring tea in a shrike(while performing a 1G roll), from the ground, unfortunately.:}
