Grab Hercules and put together another video clip for us D.

Now who could you be......?

The sad news is that Hercules had one adventure too many and won't be making too many more videos.:(

Oh, and to keep things on track, what aircraft type is this?

how do they control pitch apart from power? is it a big trim wheel style thing?

Too easy! It's the Holden blimp. (http://www.pprune.org/3390793-post1204.html) I was lucky enough to get a ride in it when it came through a while back. Pitch is indeed controlled by a big 'trim wheel style thing' next to the pilot's seat.

Its a bit wet in N Qld!

Here's the high road bridge over the Burdekin R at Macrossan (near Charters Towers) with a bit of a "fresh" going down the river (4 metres over the bridge)! It was a couple of metres higher than this yesterday, but the weather was too crap to go flying.

A bit wet between Ayr and Townsville!
http://www.fototime.com/38B1C0CBC1BCFF7/standard.jpg

One of my places of employment. Earlier today there was 3 metres of water over the road and 2M of water through the cattle yards in the foreground! The road makes a useful "flood strip" - but alas, not for the Bo!
http://www.fototime.com/0237B8458522B96/standard.jpg

Similar scene to the one above, but from wider out. Burdekin R in the foreground, Lolworth Ck in the middle ground, cattle yards, and homestead on the hill. For the history buffs, Ludwig Leichardt's "camp of the three rocks" that is mentioned in his diary is just off the trailing edge of the wingtip - under a couple of metres of water!
http://www.fototime.com/18C39EF9BB08D16/standard.jpg

"See and be seen" at work! A bit crowded along the Burdekin today. Spot the chopper - make and model?

morno, at Ayr/Home Hill that is true. If you look at the pic of the rail/road bridge between those towns, the Burdekin has been known to break its banks there on many occassions. I think the difference is that the Bowen R, which comes in below the Burdekin Dam is not in flood.

Different story upstream of the dam, where the flood level is second only to the BIG one in 1946.

See post #4336

The water first went over the Burdekin Dam spillway on 5th January and up to 10th February, 14,370,000ML have gone over the wall.

It peaked at 6.63M above the spillway on 5th February and approx 1,570,000ML of water went over the spillway in that 24 hr period.

The record was 6.68M set in Feb 1991.

The dam holds 1,860,000ML when full so it took about 28 hrs to spill its own volume.

I posted this also on the Darwin in the '80's thread, but believe that some here might appreciate this as a very much one-of in this country. I believe it was around '86 after an Air France Concord stayed overnight doing a flight around the world. We all stood out on the grass in front of the old tower (could not do that today!!) and watched as it took off followed by 2 MIRs from 75 Sqn. They then formed up & did about 3 passes over the field - all at about 500-1000ft. It then departed for SIN with a clearance to climb to FL590.
This picture is looking north and they are flying down runway 11. The final pass was from the south, right over the tower. (great days)

hmmmm... those oxbows look shocking familiar... up in the Pyke Valley or Lower Hollyford, perhaps somewhere handy to Lake Alabaster? Name of the strip eludes me for the now. Or perhaps the Arawata River down towards the mouth... more likely when I think about it.

2nd pic CGG... yup thought so, Dave S from NZWF, Definitely proves I can manage an air-register search, little else.

3rd pic, was I a betting bloke, I'd be saying NE side of Mt Aspiring looking S towards the upper Matukituki and the Cascade/Shotover Saddles, just visible behind. The Volta Glacier should have been to your immediate R and pretty much directly under you. Absolutely crap day to be airborne up there too. Bet you had an interesting day getting anywhere.

I am impressed...more sheep shaggers on here than I thought:ok:...Alabaster it is.

I think Mt Aspiring was in cloud yesterday...saw it today on my way to another strip which I will link a short vid of when I can...wonderful fun...way more challenging than most PNG strips...blowing a gale for one and VERY short and VERY thin...but a great cup of coffee and nice cake served by the residents...we bought them some mags/bread/fruit and the last few days news papers...very remote.

The South Island is SOMETHING ELSE...Sarge and I are having a ball giving his 185 a work out. Done two days now and starting to get the lay of the land...mostly Sarge just says "fly over that way...land there"

Overnighting tonight at his sisters place...landed in the paddock back of her house.

Edit: Most impressed...having discussed it at length with the household it IS Mt Aspiring looking south towards the Matukituki (which was clagged yesterday - went (up/down?) it today on the way to somewhere more challenging than Alabaster.

Yup, I thought as much. Clag in the Matukituki hanging at around the 7k mark or slightly lower is usually the only compelling reason to go around the NE face of the mountain. That layer hanging there at about 10k too... hope you had an eye on what was going on behind you! I've seen those conditions deteriorate to zero vis in less time than it takes to tell of it. I'd be betting the Arawata was nothing too flash and the Olivine probably closed or marginal -out around the Red Hills was it to clearer air in the Pyke/Hollyford?

Done the Siberia thing yet? I'm betting you'll have at least stopped at Makarora for a yarn with Paul... Stumpie still there or house-husbanding again?

We did...this is Sarge's back yard...he's been trotting around these mountains and strips in this particular 185 since he was a boy. Red Hills and Alabaster was beautiful..the pics/vid at Alabaster were taken between a trip each way across the mountains in that weather. After 14 years in PNG I know what a backdoor looks like.:ok:

Thoroughly enjoying your photo's & vids Chimbu Chuckles -and more than just a little bit envious! Miss that place something fierce. I certainly wasn't trying to call yours or Sarge's experience, professionalism or knowledge into question in the previous post -just trying to subtly get the message across to those unfamiliar with mountain ops that there is certainly more to it than might meet the eye in some of the images posted.
It's certainly the sort of country that a lot of itinerants are keen to get in amongst -who could blame them- but not all are careful or smart enough to seek some local knowledge before they go blasting off, sometimes with tragic consequences. All too often the guys that fly in that area are regularly tagged "cowboys", usually by those who have little or no knowledge of what we do, how or why we do it. In comparison to what they may be used to, I imagine that we could be perceived as cowboys, but for the knowledge, care, thought & experience that underpin every flight.
I've seen ATPL's, high-time CPL's and Instructors, Military and every level of experience come unglued in there, as I'm sure you have in PNG etc., and Sarge too. Regrettably on occasion the local guys sometime push their luck just a little too hard too. No one is immune and the mountains unforgiving -they deserve ultimate respect.
You would have had a helluva night at Makarora I'm sure -video of that would have been a crack-up! Hope you get into Siberia -one of my favourite places on the planet. Have a ball and keep posting the pics!

Points well made RS.

Well my South Island adventure is over and I am back in Brisvegas for 4 days working on my Bonanza before heading back to work for 10 days or so and then another weeks leave in Perth for more taildragging fun in another mate's newly imported C195.

This was my first trip to the South Island...it will NOT be the last. It's just the most spectacular place I have ever seen...and it changes constantly...fly 40nm and you could be in a different world but just as spectacular.

You'll possibly have noticed me laughing in unrestrained joy after each landing at Gorge river, Alabaster etc. I haven't had so much fun in an aeroplane since my PNG days ended over a decade ago. Thanks to Sarge's encyclopedic local knowledge it was relatively safe fun too.

The run into Makaroa...cant remember what this valley was called but Sarge said "remember the Kosipe Valley?" - Yes - "Turn up here, cross that saddle then turn right":ok:

D3cY4BY92w0

Last trip was an amazing flight down to the southern tip of NZ on a cloudless and smooth day before landing at Roger Monk's strip, cuppa at Sarge's cousin's place and then dropped off to QN to start home.

I'll certainly be back this time next year for another Tiki tour and more beer at the C180/185 annual Fly in...although next year I'll take a bit more leave and include some camping/fishing/hunting:ok:

That's TAC is it? Wondered where it had got to.

Sarge would have much more information as it was his mount in PNG.

Back in this thread I have posted some pics of it in PNG.

I used to fly it occasionally - mostly training newbies. Originally it belonged to New Tribes Mission (P2-NTM from memory) and then it was sold to Trans Niugini Airways (P2-TAC)
http://www.fototime.com/{1B80C0C0-846D-41BC-8E35-95945E73878D}/picture.JPG

This was the result of hitting a cable during a forced landing after running a tank dry in the circuit at POM. My fault - I had told a trainee to ensure both was selected after we dipped the tanks and I didn't check that he had done so. The aircraft had been parked all night on a side slope and most of the fuel had drained from the up wing to the down and the up wing was selected. There was no time to get a restart so I landed on a road and hit pole support cables just above the road.:ouch:
http://www.fototime.com/{1C888053-7159-43CE-BCE4-C7EB089E14F0}/picture.JPG

Nice to see her restored...she was a nice aeroplane.

Actually I helped trash that pod twice..some time later I was route endorsing a new 185 pilot into some strip or other and he got a little slow...."More power...MORE POWER!!!"...well more power came just a bee's dick too late and we 'arrived' 3 points and splayed the main gear a bit and a bump in the strip split the bottom of the pod:E

On another occasion while taxiing out we found ourselves looking 'up' more than was usual and stopping dead in our tracks despite 'lotsa' power...the tailwheel tube had corroded through just in front of the tailwheel assembly and broke off. We were rescued by someone in a C206 (Oh the shame of it) and went back the next day with a little ski shaped tailskid welded to a tube the right diameter...we wanged it onto the broken stub, drilled holes for bolts and lock wire etc etc...stood back to survey our handy work. (me) "Reckon that will stand up to a takeoff/landing?" (engineer) "Not a fecking chance!" We manhandled it onto the strip and I hopped in and started her up...flaps 20 and full power against the brakes/bit of fwd stick, raised the tail up and took off level from a standing start...at Moresby landed on the grass next to 14R and bought her to a complete stop tail up before gently lowering it down. On yet another occasion at Enonge the bolt that passes down through the tailwheel assembly sheered so I collected all the bits together, strapped the cables around the tube and took off level from a standing start...this time I decided I could taxi it all the way to the hangar at Moresby so, to the utter amazement of the chaps in the tower (I did explain it to them on finals but they don't seem to have understood) I proceeded to do so...around several 90 degree bends and along at least two long straight taxiways I went, engine roaring, flaps 20, tail up until pulling into a parking spot outside the hangar...to the bemusement of several engineers too.:E

Weren't my brakes:ok:

Edit: and for those who wonder why we couldn't make the runway we had been extended on downwind to let a QF767 backtrack and it all went quiet too far away to make the airfield.:{

Had me wondering if it was TAC. It was a great machine and my first mount in PNG. Was doing an Islander endorsement when Chuck had his mishap in it, had done the same thing a couple of weeks earlier and got away with it. Our 185s did not have fuel selectors hence the finger trouble. The good news is Tac is/has been rebuilt in Sydney by a Skydive operation I think. A very similar scheme to the one pictured. I sent the owner photos of her time in PNG. The Milky Bar kid flew it after me than she was left essentially derilect in Nadzab and picked up corrosion.
Back to our trip it was great to go back after 20 years in some cases and check out the old strips. Most are just faint wheel tracks and seldom if ever used. Had to say to Chuck 'I will have to fly this one since I have not bee there for years and may not be able to find it if it is still there'. Will start poking into some of the shorter Strips now I am current again. The old guys that did the venison flying etc are fading from the scene and the new generation are more interested in helicopters, hence the lack of use in the remote places. But there is still a lively interest in the Aircraft and some younger blokes about. Also have noticed some of the Older Airframes are starting to fall by the wayside. Like CGG was they just need a full refurbishment in the end due age. Unless you get the Hull for about nothing and do much of the work yourself as Chuck is the cost is prohibitive. Would not be able to do CGG now due to the massive labour cost. So it is great to see such wonderful old machines as P2 Tac rebuilt, she will be good for a further 40 years and you cant say that about a Robbie! :ok:

A question for you 185 pilots. Why do they all seem to have 2 blade props? I thought 3 blade might be better for take off performance and ground clearance.

There is also a very smart C185 at YARM. GNS530, flush rivetted etc.

Looking forward to learning more on PPRuNe!

19th Mar 2009, 08:39
Bushy the cross bars are seaplane kit to stiffen the airframe...CGG doesn't need them because she was modified by Fieldair for top dressing so has massively strengthened wings and fuse to take the hopper and general abuse. She's stiffer than any seaplane kit 185 by a large margin. The cross bars are REALLY good to swing off when getting in and out though.

Two bladed props were standard when new..three blades look cool and are smoother but, until the advent of scimitar props, were marginally better off the ground, not much in it in climb and slower in cruise. Theoretically the most efficient prop would be a single blade but its not a practical proposition for obvious reasons. Too a 3 blade prop is next to useless on anything with less than 300hp.

Nice paint job on BVS/TAC:ok:

Anyone want to hazard a guess why Cessna didn't put the 185 back in production? Surely they didn't crush the jigs like they did to the 210 jigs. Seems to me a lot of people are spending cubic money rebuilding old ones to as new standard so there might be a market for new build C185s...mind you rebuilding to 'as new' is probably cheaper than a real new build....you aint paying to cover Cessna against product liability issues for the next 20 years - a BIG part of the new sticker price.

ForkTailedDrKiller

Why do they all seem to have 2-blade props? I thought 3 blade might be better for take off performance and ground clearance

Not all, but most! VH-KGT, now in NZ had a 3-blader. The two bladers, especially the large diam one that goes with the seaplane kit, give better performance off the ground - in my somewhat limited experience. The 3-blader obviously has more clearance and is a bit smoother. Can't say I have ever seen one with a 3-blade scimitar prop - now that might be interesting!

That's a proper 185 with the strenghtening bars to the top of the panel

As distinct from an improper one?

The cross-bracing comes with the seaplane kit. Many 185s that were never intended for floats were ordered with them. A mate of mine owes the fact that his head is still connected to his body to the cross-bracing! The top cowl made a very determined attempt to come through the windscreen and decapitate him when he rolled his 185 (VH-KFT, twin of KGT) up in a ball ............ but that is a whole other story!

Cessna themselves sometime in the late 90's announced that they were considering puting the 185 (no mention was made of the 180) back into production. It was thought at the time that the new 185's would be manufactured with the IO-520, but that's about as far as it went.
Whenever someone from Cessna was asked about the new 185 there was a lot of whistling and shuffling of feet.
Evidentally someone down the road at Textron thought it should've had (the 185) an IO-540 bolted to it.
Some sums were done and it was determined that by the time it was recertified with an IO-540 it would be too expensive (a bit like the 210).
Nothing official from Cessna on the subject, has been heard in over 10 years.

Come to think of it, I actually think it might've been Russ Meyer at the time just thinking out loud. So nothing official from Cessna as such, probably just a bit of wishful thinking from the CEO.

Cessna considered putting the 185 back into production only if there were a certain number of orders. This did not eventuate.

2 blade vesus 3 blade:
Depends on diameter.

The 86" 3 blade on mine is the best things since sliced bread, in warm condition, with a heavy load. Compared to the 80" 3 blade it replaced, there is no contest. Reduced T/o rolls by 1/2 to 2/3.
The 80" 3 blade(thin blade) was a bit faster in cruise, however.
The big prop is about 4 kts slower. It is an excellent airbrake though.
if you pull power on finals, you can aim it at the ground and not build up much speed compared to the 80". It is also easier to slow down in the circut for the same reason. Cost $11k with spinner. Trouble with the 2 blades is that you can't get parts for them, and only recently is there a replacement available for the C58, which was the only 2 blade prop approved for the IO520 on the 185.

On my previous 185, I started with a 88" 2 blade. This packed a punch when compared with the later 82" 2 blade that came after it.

The main disadvantage with the 86" prop below, is the noise at 2850 rpm.

Meaty, ain't it.
