Which CBD? If you mean the BAE Hawk....well maybe but if you meant CBD of Caloundra or Woorim on Bribie....I may just know what you mean. Might even have some video of that too that was emailed to me from the aforementioned RV8 with Subbie up front.

JR you 'white cane current' for landings?

Do NOT try to peer down the side of the cowl on landing - you'll end up pointed way left because you will tend to line up the curved cowl with what little else you can see. 75-80 kts down final...75kts over the fence...trickle off the power as you round out and flare looking straight ahead into nothing and keep stuff lined up in your peripheral vision. Keep the nose coming up for a tail low wheeler. As the tail wheel settles on slide your feet up onto the brakes 'cause you is about to lose rudder effectiveness. The tail wheel is stearable but you WILL need a little brake to stay straight.

Get the round out and flare right and she will reward you with lovely greasers...but the C195 is about the blindest tail dragger you will ever fly. Two people who have owned/flown Harvards and who also own/fly C195s have told me the 195 is a significantly more challenging aeroplane to land.

Get current in a C185 concentrating on tail low/wheeler landings and the C195 won't present any insurmountable problems landing wise. They can be 3 pointed but the rear bulkhead is a weak point and did I mention they are BLIND forward on the ground?

Ha!

Its a Boeing 727, right? Made in the US of A, right? The US has had an embargo on trade with Iran for many many years - since the embassy thing, right?

That 727 doesn't actually have a nosewheel, and the yanks won't sell them a new one - so they have been operating that aeroplane like that for years. A rubber pad replaces the nosewheel.

Practice makes perfect.

Gives new meaning to "rotate" on TO. :E

The pink in the water of Lake Eyre is due to the algae growth that occurs in the extremely high salinity level water. It is apparent when the waters start to recede because it is then that the salinity levels start to rise without the influx of fresh water.

Hmmm, spent some enforced sit down time yesterday, thread mining here. Geez there is some gold to be found; not having spent time in PNG I particularly enjoyed the pics and stories about that part of the planet, although outback Aus has it's own attractions. Frustrating though that so many of the links and photos have disappeared - I can understand the powers that be not wanting to pay to host all our pics, but it's a bit like "watching" the Victoria's Secret show with the picture turned off, if you get my drift. Eg there was much hilarity over a photo that apparently involved Mr Cessna's 208 model and something/someone else back on about p187 but the photo itself ahd long since disappeared into the ether:{.

Anyhow here is one of mine from a month or two back;

The Toowoomba, Queensland newspaper The Chronicle publish a historical photograph each week, from the Toowoomba - Darling Downs region.

Today, Monday 5 December 2011 they published the following photograph:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v315/Woomera/PPRuNe/TheChronicleMondayDecember52011S.jpg

With the caption:
"SPRAYING TIME: Workers loading a spray plane with DDT to spray grubs in linseed crops at Pirrinuan 1956"

Pirrinuan is a small farming community about 15 kms north of Dalby, on the Dalby - Jandowae Road.

I noticed the Tiger Moth carried the registration VH-WPK on the upper wing and VH-WPO on the rudder. (The upper fuse, rear of the cockpit also appears different, more "rounded", but that may be my imagination?)

Out of totally idle curiosity at a time I should have been working, I wondered how the aircraft ended up with two registrations; whether it was VH-WPK or VH-WPO; and who owned and operated the aircraft?

Google gives:
Ser No 84529 DH82A TIGER MOTH T8256 G-AOFG VH-AWI VH-WPK N5676 N38KH

DH82A TIGER MOTH A17-? T.113 VH-WPK VH-API

Does that perhaps indicate VH-WPK was a UK built Tiger Moth and ended up on the US FAA Registry, or Australian built Tiger Moth ending up as VH-API? (VH-API is now an RV-6). It appears N38KH is a DH82 currently on the US register?

By coincidence I guess, VH-WPK is still an agricultural aircraft, a Piper PA-25-235, based at Gatton, only a few miles east of Toowoomba.

Ser No DHA129 DH82A TIGER MOTH RAAF as A17-132 T.229 VH-AQX VH-WPO

ADF Serials lists A17-132 only as:

A17-132 DHA129?

Presumable VH-WPO came to grief at some stage and was written off?

Just curious........

AussieO2
5th Dec 2011, 20:43
Interesting photo, by my records, VH-WPO is c/n 129/T223 and was registered as such on 19/01/1957, previously being VH-AQX. Operated by Airwork Co, Archerfield. Was withdrawn from use on 31/12/1963.... VH-WPK is c/n 84529 and was registered as such on 05/01/1960, previously being VH-AWI, again with Airwork Co. It did go to the USA as N5676. If the caption on the photo is correct, ie 1956, both of these registrations did not exist at that date! I would say that the date is incorrect and that one wing off WPK was fitted to WPO, sometime between 1960 and 1963.

Further investigations reveal, VH-WPK, c/n T113 registered 08/10/1956, again Airwork, then sold 1960 as VH-API....So, it could have been WPK with the tail rudder off WPO. (T113 indicates that this Tiger was a rebuild, but I don't have the details as to which one to hand).

tail wheel
6th Dec 2011, 03:58
A close look at the photo in the paper tends to indicate the rudder is a lighter shade of silver, so I suspect you are correct. The aircraft is probably VH-WPK.

Port Morbid got fogged with DDT once per week in the 1960s from the back of a truck and trailer.

I noticed in that photo they appear to be pumping a liquid? I seem to recall DDT being a very fine dry powder?

They build them tough in western QLD, the poor little kid probably rode his bike 30 miles without a safety helmet, safety vest, no mobile phone, no sunscreen, no designer clothes, no water bottle or trendy backpack just to see the flying machine. He would go home and tell his mum, dad and little brother about his amazing adventure, while mum prepared the evening roast meal.

Today before the child was driven 30 miles in mum's salary packaged SUV, to see the flying machine in the paddock, junior would have downloaded the GPS co-ordinates, texted at least 4 friends, tweeted on facebook, dropped little brother off at child care so that he and mother could quality time together in between mum talking on her iPhone to the office on her RDO about staff training issues, the car trip was initially delayed due to mum trying to find a toll free road, council road works taking place due to floods caused by global warming are now closed for the day due to OH&S laws adpoted by the shire council after consultation with their lawyers , so mother takes little Johnie to the DFO and cheers him up by him some designer clothing imported from China and they send his other mummy a photo via his ipad of him having lunch at Macca's. Mum sends a text to her partner, to pick up the other child from childcare and to pick up a take away meal, a nice bottle of wine to go with the meal.

Little Johnie would have googled learning to fly on his ipod, and e-mailed a number of flying schools about the JET PILOT CAREER fast track careeer devopment programme which includes fully intergrated ATPL, Multi-crew multi turbo-jet time, A320/B787 2 for 1 bonus offer, Business degree all done in 12 months. He then discussed and put a proposal to his mother over lunch to finance his flying training, she then e-mailed the CBA bank to enquire about remortaging the second unit they are negatively gearing on the Gold Coast to fund little Johnies dream career. Meanwhile little Johnie has finished lunch and shuffles off down the shopping mall trouser's at half mast and cap on backwards.

In the mid sixties I had the magical experience of marking for the Hardy bros when they dusted our linseed crops at Southbrook near Toowoomba. The tigers were powered by radials and did they sound great. The boys eventually killed them selves, one when riding on a positioning flight on a wing.

Macca. The tigers were powered by radials and did they sound great.

All Tiger Moths were powered by de Havilland Gipsy Major I inverted 4-cylinder inline engines.

I wonder if you are thinking of the CA-28 Ceres, which was a developed from the Wirraway trainer of World War II? That had a Pratt & Whitney R-1340 radial engine and I remember seeing Ceres operating in central Queensland during the 1970s. The other radial engine agricultural aircraft possibilities could be the Boeing Stearman or Gruman Ag Cat.

You betcha, those ropes have saved many a float plane pilot from some rather embarrassing mistakes when the stuff up a dock. I know of one guy who used it as a Tarzan rope when he misjudged the current on docking towards a rock wall.
Plus they're quite handy when you're trying to hold on to it or move it around on a dock.

'Pros' couldn't agree more there with yr comment in some ways but the stupid thing about all this is that there is no need to risk the lives of others, higher risk that is (pilot/crew etc) when there are safer options!:ugh:..........still it all boils down to one thing I guess, money, aviation & money go hand in hand & safety/risk gets put on the back burner.
Always amuses me what's the single biggest reason we have multi engined A/C in the first place? SAFETY. The power output of today's modern large jet engine for Eg could easily push a large airliner thru the sky as a single unit but it's not done as the manufacturers would never sell one 'cause it's unsafe.Boeing & Airbus would pump 'em out like hot dogs if they could sell 'em!
As I have said many times before it's all about choice & I simply wouldn't chose to fly in a higher risk environment than needed:)

tinpis, Digitalworks in Hallam, Vic, are a very good printing crowd. All manner of shapes and sizes and paper types.

Just get onto their website, download the program (all free), and you can upload, pay and have printed just about anything you want. Can even be posted anywhere in Aus if an individual cannot pick it up.

I've had them do a lot of printing for me. Highly recommended. Better than any other local two-bit shop that can just print your digi photos by plugging in your stick, pushing a couple of buttons and away you go.
I've got prints that have been on display for over 5 years and they are still going strong.

Ignoring the vexatious idiot for a minute, or longer as you might prefer, here is a similar Tecnam Sierra that I fly from time to time, and it has pretty good wrinkles, and while they flex in flight you can only but wonder how many times they can do it before they crack.

The scene is nice, but not as interesting as yours.

1) Perhaps we read too much some time into others posts?

2) Waffle is also called "oil canning".
3) Why does the RV10 have a waffle plate?

Please see the RVator for additional details.

We recently tested a possible RV-10 wing in the prototype shop…all 31.5 feet of it. Construction is similar to an RV-9 wing. There are three spanwise J-stiffeners. Two are on the top, one forward of the spar and one aft, and another on the bottom between the main and rear spars. The main spar is dimensionally different, but conceptually identical to the spars used in the RV-7/8/9–a channel bent from 0.063" 2024 aluminum, milled bars top and bottom, and a "waffle plate" providing additional cap strip area and all the necessary vertical stiffening. Skins and ribs are perfectly ordinary. For test purposes, we did not use an actual wing tip, because shot bags slide off the curved shape. Instead, we extended and braced the bottom skin to provide the tip surface area.

Happy Christmas you lot, and try to stay calm despite your initial personal feelings.

Other than that the wing has a fuel cap and another circle thing that looks like a vent or similar, but not a dome.

Fathom that is where a 767s ASI lives in cruise - right up against the barber pole...see the command speed bug...its normal.

Having said that Keg the last time I dressed up in a Santa suite (Wau Golf Club Xmas party 1989) and climbed into an aircraft (Pacific Helicopters Chopper) we hit (the one and only) power line on approach to the clubhouse and blacked out the entire town for all of xmas day and most of Boxing Day.

Santa's Sleigh took a hammering - electrical cable wrapped around everything - not to mention Santa and his Elf near **** themselves:ooh:

Didn't take long for someone to notice. 340 KIAS @ FL270 in smooth air and F/O PF with thrust levers back. I think we were pretty right.

Asw28,

I reckon your pic is in the Buccanneer Archipelago. To be precise I reckon the U-shaped pass under the wing is 'Whirlpools'. I also reckon your enroute from CTI to DBY????
