Doc, you off track for a reason? :E

ForkTailedDrKiller
2nd Feb 2008, 12:58
BA - I deliberately off-set my track a bit to reduce the chance of running into someone else on the airway. One of the hazards of GPS navigation is that it is so accurate - I figure +/- 1 m.

With that sort of GS you don't get much time to take avoiding action.

Dr :8

ForkTailedDrKiller
2nd Feb 2008, 23:15
1) What is the story with the groundspeed?

Sub-jetstream = An unusual meteorological event resulting in extreme lower level winds!

2) Shouldn't you be applying a right track offset like everyone else instead of a left one?

If everyone offsets to the right - I like to go left to be different.

Dr :8

PS: An alternative explaination might be that the mad Dr, being a bit of a smartar*e, used a GPS simulator program to produce the Jepp FliteDeck output illustrated. Said program may have required the Dr to input the waypoints in whole degrees to five decimals, and the Dr was too lasy (or incapable!) to do so, resulting in a slightly offset track.

It does however illustrate that you should not believe everything you see in PPRuNe!

Hi FTDK, this may be a dumb question, but here it goes anyway:

What happens when you enter or leave this subjetstream, isn't the change in windspeeds dangerous for the aircraft structure, or is the transition gradual?

PyroTek

Plank... if you read the last post that the Dr. wrote you'll see he just used a GPS sim. i.e. Pulling your leg.

An approximate 700 kt (or read ~1300kmph) tail wind should have given that away that he was having you on... ;)

Just when I got used to having to think in feet for vertical distance, miles for horizontal distance (unless its a runway, when you use metres), pounds for weight in the aeroplane and kilograms for weight outside the aeroplane, litres off the bowser to gallons in the tanks...

"Anyways Doc, how did your Bonanza get that fast?"

thrust clb - if you look back through the posts you'll see that I did explain it (sub-jetstream!). Was just having a bit of fun to illustrate that all may not be quite as it seems. I ran a GPS simulator program on the tablet computer that has my FliteDeck moving map program, and set the waypoints for YLRE - YBTL with a GS of 842 kts - and then took a pic of it.

I later did it again with the GS set to 10,000 kts - man does that cover some country!

To date the best GS I have had in the V35B is 204 kts on descent into Cairns last year. I was about to pull out and pass a Dash 8 when ATC noticed the rate of closure - and vectored me out to sea!

There's a number of posts above regarding how fast one might go, so here's something at the other end of the scale. Taken whilst flying straight and level at a constant airspeed of 38kt IAS. One needle width slower and the nose pitches down with the old girl rolling gently off onto the left wing. If you can wind it back any slower, let's see it.

"How slow can you go? "

OK, OK! I admit defeat! B*gger it GB!

20"/2500 rpm at 10,000' - 10 degrees flap - wheels up - deck angle straight out of the Space Shuttle at blast off - I could just get it to 40 kt IAS (which is as low as the ASI in the FTDK goes) before my world kinda fell apart!

Sorry, no piccies! I just could not maintain equilibrium and work the camera at the same time!

Jabaaaaaa, where the hell are you when I need you?

Now if I was a devious sort of person, I might have landed and taped over the ASI. Had I done that I might have discovered that with the ASI taped up on the ground with multiple layers of electricians tape - somehow, instead of reading 0 kts as one might have expected, it might read about 60 kts once the engine was started and sat on 60 kts the whole bloody time. Of course nobody would deliberately take-off in an aeroplane with the ASI taped over, so I am only speculating here as to what might happen in the FTDK if one were to do so!

Conclusion? Cessna fit crappy under-reading (at the bottom end of the scale anyway!) ASIs to their aeroplanes! I suspect the same ASI's over-read at the top end of the scale!

how do I post a photo i can't work it out and I am not great with computers

Here's a post from another PPRuNe Forum:

Quote:
NOTE:

To post a picture on PPRuNe, it has to be on a website already - whether your own or someone else's. If it's not, all is not lost ...... read on.

If the picture already on a website .....

It will have an URL (the unique 'address' of that pic on the web)
To find the URL (using Windows):
Right-click on the picture and select 'Properties'
You'll see lots of info, including the URL.
Highlight and Copy the entire URL.
NB: Always highlight from the beginning or you may not get the full URL if it's long.

If the picture is on your hard disk .....

Option 1: Find a friend with a web site who will 'host' the picture for you They'll send you the URL for your picture so you can then post it.
or

Option 2: Use a photo-hosting site.

Photobucket (http://www.photobucket.com/) seems to be the best, very simple to use and it's free.
An 'offshoot' of Photobucket is TinyPic but as far as I can see this one does not have a facility to resize the image.

Once you've loaded your picture on the host, it will give you the URL - or you can use the procedure described above.

Photobucket also allows you to reduce the size of any pics which are too big for the PPRuNe web page.

NB: Some photo-hosting services host your pics but won't allow you to link to them from another site.

Size is important!

Picture size must not exceed 800x600 pixels MAXIMUM, to avoid the PPrune thread viewing window becoming too large.

You can see the size of any image (in Windows) by right-cliking on the image and selecting 'properties'.

There are many ways to resize images, and since most photogs have digicams now and these normally come with image handling programmes it should not present too much of an intellectual challenge to produce the correct size!

There are many Shareware image handling programmes plus lots of FREE downloadable ones. A simple 'Google' search or read of a computer magazine or two will produce plenty of ideas. There are also several FREE 'on-line' image re-sizing sites. Here are a few links for you:-

1 Izhuk.com

2 Resizeimage.4u2ges.com

3 Resize2mail.com

4 Online-image-resize.kategorie.cz

5 Graphicssoft.about.com

PLEASE NOTE that since these are FREE they do impose certain restrictions on file types and sizes and normally require you to permit their 'cookies' onto your machine.

Now to Post!:

Begin to post as normal.

Click the IMG button - one of the buttons above the text box. NB: Ensure you have something other than 'BASIC EDITOR' selected in your 'User CP'/'Edit Options'

An 'Input Box' will appear.

Copy the URL into the address line as instructed.

Click OK.

Add whatever text you wish and Submit.

At first, as with any new process involving computers, you'll probably go through some http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/Heliport/pc-crash.gif moments.

Common Problems:

No 'Image' icon etc on the 'Reply' screen:

Wrong 'Editor' mode selected.

Picture doesn't display:

Your post may show a link, not a picture - edit your post.

Check to see if 'URL' appears anywhere in the web address of the picture. If it's there at all, it will be there twice. Remove both.

(You've used information from the URL, but those letters should not appear in the final address or you'll get a link instead of a picture.)

You have IMG..../IMG around the image:

You have copied an IMG tag from Photobucket rather than the URL tag. To get rid of it, either edit out the excess [IMG] [/ IMG] in your post or replace the code using the URL tag.

Te Kowhai is a well formed grass runway now about 700m long. They even have an above ground BP Fuel bowser there now and heaps of hangarage and a pilots lounge... http://aip.net.nz/pdf/NZTE.pdf
Great little aerodrome (except when Max plants watermellons and pumpkin immediately next to the runway!!)
Max looked pretty spritely when I saw him at SportAvex last weekend??

Hey 'Laz'....

Just LUV DAT 'PALM PILOT'.....

Good One!!! And well presented!!!

And 'Jaba' Reminds me of the time I landed at LEO (WA) ...NO Electrics...no flaps...no lights...very little moon... but... STILL'ERE!! (In a 172)
Graham in 'The Powerhouse' was very helpful!

So, 'Wal' the 172 is virtually self - non - destructible - for a 'normal' ole fart paylut...and...ya gets ta fly in da shade...:cool:

You guys think I am joking about the talking cigarette light don't you?

I swear...G296/G430/G496/PC tablet and a fecking talking cigarette lighter:ooh:

On descent into Maroochy in IMC the Lady in da tower (Rapunzel?) asks for radial and distance. Ahhh but nothing beats system redundancy like a GPS for every seat in da plane...and I bet even Airbus' don't got a talking cigarette lighter:}

All jokes aside...nice day on Friday..lunch at Hervey Bay, pick up son of FTDK at Bundaberg, back to Maroochydore to pick up Brother of FTDK's Mooney (pictured) and the alternator spit the dummy leaving the Maroochy zone heading back to YCAB so we turned everything off and put the gear down while we had plenty of electrons and went to YRED...where if needed my Alternator was available. Some hope of getting the FTDK serviceable for the fly in but was not to be...LAME/work/Saturday...pick any two.

Great day at Jimbour...lots of laughs and good company...definately what it is ALL about.

Someone even arrived in a Glider:uhoh:...and left in a trailer:ouch:

OK, the truths out!

Yes, I had to slum it in Bro's Mooney 205.

Doesn't climb like the V35B - but 4 up, 245 L gas, 2500/25", 162 kts TAS, and get this - 38 L (that's THIRTY-EIGHT) litres/hr.

Not bad on 200 ponies.

OK Ultralights, here's a bit of history for ya!

On 16 January 1977, I did a check ride in VH-CFK at YBAF with one Barry Hempell who was working at Gill Layt's Flying School at the time. It was my first Bonanza ride (as PIC) but not my first retractable, having done an M20 endorsement in early 1976.

On 30/31 January I flew it to Great Keppel Is and back!

Nah Pyro, my first retractable endorsement was done with Gill Layt in a green Mooney Super 21 VH-MWB. It had a big lever between the two front seats that operated the gear. When the gear was down the lever was upright and locked in under the panel, and when the gear was up the lever locked down between the seats.

VH-MWB was put in the drink off Newcastle in the 70's by a pilot who ran a tank dry and couldn't get it started again quickly.

Daylight comes after a long night :) -- This day they had some hassles at the paper printers and the departure was delayed by about 2-3 hours. From memory a new setup was being trialed whereby the papers were picked up in BNE, fuel in LRE, Crew change and fuel in Isa, DN, TNK, then AS - then ferry back to TL. Radar was in the OFF mode :} - had severe cavok :)

Possibly a sentimental topic?

I have a question about the aircraft in the topic.
A Queensland Aerospace Piper Tomahawk...
(It's been deregistered by CASA... registration delegated to new Aircraft)

Firstly: What is it's future? The dump? Or is it possibly good for spare parts?
Thats how it was when I first joined RAC, now it's since been moved onto the apron, and its wingtips have been smashed off.

I haven't seen such a derelict aircraft, and I really think it should have been sold off to someone who wanted it (for a cheap price), than to be left to corrode away in the sea air.

anyone here have any memories of it before it became a rust magnet?
