Clearly inspired by the T21b Sedbergh, but with some differences. Here's the whole aircraft. Note the dive-brakes rather than hinged spoilers and the different fin and rudder.

Grunau Baby was single seat however the T21 series was developed by Fred Slingsby based on it.

I remember a joke along the lines of Slingsby mis-reading the plans for the Baby, thinking the dimensions were inches rather than centimetres!

Civil Air Department RG-1 Rohini from India.

India Four Two
15th Feb 2024, 20:13
Sorry Asturias! Pipped at the post by meleagertoo.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_Aviation_Department_RG-1_Rohini

I stumbled on the Rohini quite by accident. I was looking up information on the Indian Mutiny, which took me to Lucknow and then to Cawnpore - now Kanpur. While looking at locations on Google Earth associated with the Siege of Cawnpore, I noticed a small airfield near the centre of the city, which took me to:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_Laboratory,_IIT_Kanpur

A Rohini glider, designed and developed at Technical Center of Civil Aviation Department and manufactured at HAL, was the jewel in the crown of the Flight Lab. The open cockpit, side-by-side seating, fabric covered wooden structure glider became very popular among students and used extensively for research work.

It's amazing where the Internet rabbit hole takes you.

It's not really a case of big brain, more detective work. The mystery plane was obviously preserved, the trees and people sitting outside sort of said SE Asia or tropics, the roundel under the wing was Thai Air Force or similar. Google Venezuelan and Thai airplane museums and troll through loads of images to find one that looks similar. Then try to work out which of the various names and designations associated with those images is the correct one. Choose the wrong one, post reply then decide that was not quite right, choose again and edit the post hoping it's correct this time. Having spare time helps a lot and the ambition to beat Noyade helped also. So can anyone beat Noyade on this one ........?

University research project?

Father and son team. They built a handful of different aircraft - this is the late 80's.
This machine was designed for unlimited aerobatic competition and airshow work. Plan was to eventually install 350hp engine. These photos show 200hp.
Somewhat like Grumman - their aircraft names have "CAT" in them.
Stands for Custom Aircraft by Tomalsesky.

The prototype is illustrated above - thinking Cowes.
The designer once held a world's land speed record.
After his death in a speedboat accident, the project moved to Brough, I believe. It was named after him.
Wiki says six built.
This included two built under license in Italy.

Fascinating story. It's the Saro Segrave Meteor, later to become the Blackburn Segrave designed by the racing driver Sir Henry Segrave.

Neither American nor Menasco.
Most had 4cyl engine, a few variants (of which there were many) had 6cyl units.

Let's just say it's European.
Nailing it down to a single country is too much of a giveaway.
Three different engine types were fitted across all variants.
The type had some export success both within and beyond Europe.

NEVER stand within the propeller arc. :=
Rules One, Two and Three.
Had an apprentice on the ramp for the first time a few years ago. I explained ramp safety including the above. He was, "yeh, yeh, yeh, whatever", and promptly walked through the prop arc.
He lasted about a week with us, sent him back to the hangar.

As to the photo, East European? (looking at the hats).

Not a lot to see - but a very distinctive tail. Thinking you are still in Germany and that top right white area is a deployed emergency sail.
Take it away and it should look like this....
