Y Draig Goch - the Red Dragon - or Saab J-35 Draken I'd guess

BEagle

SAAB Draken it is! Asturias56, you have control!

Thankyou - would never have got it except for the clew ...................

Try this - had several names/designations over its life - I'll accept anything reasonable

At first I thought Cirrus but hunting through "Cockpit side stick single engine" I now believe it is a Cessna 400?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cessna_400

Asturias56
3rd May 2024, 07:36
Well that didn't last long - yes the Columbia 300/Cessna400/CessnaTTx

Not a bad aircraft by all accounts but not as good as the Cirrus which took the lions share of the market

Over to Ombinda

Thanks A.

I suspect this one won't take too long either. Saw one flying for the 1st time the other day - was suitably impressed...

Looks a lot like an MI-24 back seat.

Looks a lot like an MI-24 back seat.

Because it is. Knew this one would be quick...
All yours.

Thanks Ombinda. Don't suppose this will last long either:

That's the one. Carelessly posted the whole picture rather than the crop I had intended.

Take it away BEagle

BEagle

One of those......

Ombinda
6th May 2024, 10:35
Kind of looks like the Space Shuttle stick setup...

kenparry
6th May 2024, 11:08
The instruments look to be American rather than British. 1950 ish?

sycamore
6th May 2024, 14:07
Doesn`t seem to have an AI..some kind of VSTOL `WIZZER`,like the Ryan Vertijet...?

BEagle
6th May 2024, 14:47
Not the Ryan Vertijet.

The AI is above the VSI and partially obscured by the V-shaped loop of fabric hangin down from the glareshield.

meleagertoo

Whatever it is it looks crashed and subsequently unloved.
The stick arrangement suggests a FBW or boosted system as surely it is too short for a manual stick.
Dual RBI/RMI so needs navigation eqiopment. Possibly ILS or maybe Doppler (but deosn't look like a helo)
G meter and three-needle altimeter so high altitude capable
Twin I think.
Late '40s, early '50s?
Where's the throttle/s?

BEagle
6th May 2024, 16:22
Several hundred of these existed! Long before FBW, it had powered controls though.

Single engine, throttle is just out of shot on the left side.

Asturias56
6th May 2024, 16:24
USN? or USAF/USAF??

BEagle
6th May 2024, 20:50
Perhaps......

sycamore
7th May 2024, 00:45
The `T`-Bar` ,or throttle-grip for holding during cat .launches indicates its USN/USMC,but the pic doesn`t do justice to one of the best looking jets, even if `Old Henry`said `you can only have `em in black` ..the `Ford`/F4D Skyray..fastest carrier-borne jet,s-sonic in level flight, world altitude record holder ...at that time,...
Thought it may have been a pic of the FJ-3,another `classy` jet..

OH if correct.....

BEagle
7th May 2024, 08:20
Correct, sycamore, it is indeed the cockpit of a Douglas F4D-1 Skyray!

You have control!

Deja view :p or Senior moment?

you posted that as a challenge in late April - thread #4239 - some Danish aircraft IIRC

meleagertoo
12th May 2024, 16:02
Senior moment then...I even did a search to check and it didn't come up!

Ok, back to open house.

Asturias56

Asturias56
13th May 2024, 07:24
Might as well name it Beagle

Ombinda
13th May 2024, 10:26
American X type?

Does that dial bottom right say Ammonia?

BEagle
13th May 2024, 11:06
That gauge does indeed indicate Ammonia quantity.

I will leave it for others to name the aircraft type.

Asturias56
13th May 2024, 14:31
Why? Surely you deserve the plaudits??

BEagle
14th May 2024, 07:52
No. All I did was to provide a larger image of the mystery cockpit than the very small one you submitted.

Someone else should name the aicraft.

meleagertoo
14th May 2024, 14:03
Is this aircraft actually powered by ammonia, because I've searched every such one I can find (and there aren't many) and none are remotely similar - or is the ammonia used for something else?

Asturias56
14th May 2024, 14:35
An excellent question.

The ammonia appears to have been used in the air conditioning system - both for electronics and crew..................

Ombinda
14th May 2024, 14:43
I think (maybe?) that I found it?

https://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/Visit/Museum-Exhibits/Fact-Sheets/Display/Article/195767/north-american-xb-70-valkyrie/

BEagle
14th May 2024, 15:37
Ammonia was used for electrical equipment coolig durin taxying, approach and landing and during in-flight electronic system overheat conditions.

Ombinda, you are correct - you have control!

meleagertoo
14th May 2024, 18:25
Seriously good bit of lateral confusion sowed there - well done. Even though Beagle did recognise it.

I searched long and hard for any aircraft that used ammonia for any purpose and drew a blank.

Extreme cooling - aircon - ammonia. Yes - of course!

Respect!!!

Ombinda
14th May 2024, 19:08
A bit of lucky Google, not knowlege.
Bed and busy day ahead.
Open house.

Asturias56
15th May 2024, 07:39
I agree - Ombinda has it and has declared OH

BigBoreFour
15th May 2024, 16:53
Ammonia was used for electrical equipment cooling during taxying, approach and landing and during in-flight electronic system overheat conditions.

Also used on the ISS for similar purposes.
Smelling salts.
Can be used to manufacture methamphetamine.
And is used for treatment of cotton materials.

For those playing at home with no access to wikipedia.

BEagle
15th May 2024, 22:29
NOT powered by ammonia:

1920s? British?

Ombinda
16th May 2024, 06:42
Did it fly across the Atlantic?

BEagle
16th May 2024, 11:19
It did not cross the Atlantic.

BEagle
16th May 2024, 22:21
...and pre-WW2 British!

Asturias56
17th May 2024, 07:25
Did it see RAF Service?

BEagle
17th May 2024, 07:35
Not just with the RAF, other air forces too.

Asturias56
17th May 2024, 16:13
so - something built in numbers - well for the interwar period.

Single engined?

meleagertoo
18th May 2024, 11:44
It's so so Hawker Fury/Demon Blackburn Baffin but I can't place it.

BEagle
18th May 2024, 22:01
None of the above!

Noyade
19th May 2024, 04:57

You have control.

Just trying.
