Beamr
28th Aug 2021, 19:40
It certainly is EA-1E! Even though I tried to find a drawing of a less built version of the Skyraider with smoke and mirrors to make identification more difficult, I knew this wouldn't take long with the knowledge and experience on this forum (maybe even with some present who'd actually flown it). But I had to do it as for if there would be the opportunity to have a ride in one aircraft of choice, the Skyraider would be my choice. Take a big radial from a big bomber, sit on it and go flying low.

I am in doubt between the Donnet Leveque flying boats (type a/b/c) and the FBA derivatives.
Cockpit layout seems to be the same for them.
With the horizontal spars just above the fuselage edges.

Or least I could not find different pictures.
Therefore I was trying to prope which museum you visited.
Perhaps you can give a clue in where the differences can be recognized?

meleagertoo
17th Nov 2021, 20:14
Well, that's a very fine bit of sleuthing from SLB, I'd never heard of either Donnet Leveque or FBA before I encountred this beauty. I wouldn't have a scooby about their differences, sorry! I just saw this thing in a museum and thought, "hey, there's a rare one for the challenge". I might have known it wouldn't last long against some of the intellects here!

I imagine it is now merely a formality but I shall leave it to you (unless someone else beats you to it) to make the definitive judgment.

I say again, "it is not a Portuguese design".
There is a coach museum nearby.

That should do it!

Self loading bear
17th Nov 2021, 21:11
Then I single out the FBA B in the Museu de Marinha (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Museu_de_Marinha) in Lisbon.

Allegedly the concept for an aircraft whose stable mate flew on all fours!

OK - Open House!

it was the concept for the XR-12 airliner, based on the Republic XF-12 Rainbow:

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune.org-vbulletin/290x174/images_c250c8ff6ae6586695acb29496f9174e52339abd.jpg

The XF-12 had 4 engines and could cruise at 400 mph at 40000ft for 4,000 miles. Hence 'flying on all fours'!

Nasty looking device - I can't believe how antiquiated the panel looks - I was looking at Fairey Battles Defiants via that cue. But 1950's?
Mon Dieu!
Still, a later (more, er, venomous) mark made an impression in the record books by all accounts, so it was not entirely a wasted effort.
As to which mark the panel belongs one would have to have better definition to read the turbojet gauges.

As this miraculous find suggests it appears to depict the Mk1 version of the SNCASO Trident 9000. The salient difference between this diagram and the OP's panel is the warning light stack centre-top of the panel. It would be expected that these might change when the Marborés were exhanged for Vipers, so on that rather tenuous basis I'll call the challenge photo a Viper-engined MkIIhttps://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune.org-vbulletin/901x486/screenshot_2022_01_01_at_13_29_17_bb1d4f2f8052191e24900f6ee7 7442d4707fc7d1.png
Edit.
Wups! No, not quite as straightforward as that - and not the Trident 9050-II. Too many changes. I hadn't spotted that the original 9000 had two versions, initially with grossly underpowered Marborés and later re-engined with licenced made Vipers.
I doubt it is possible to say which pic is which variant from the info I've found so I'll just call it a 9000Mk1.

However, it is quite clear that, as ever, BEagle had this way ahead of anyone else.

Mel,
The credits go to you as you are the first the single out a type designation. BEagle clearly knew much and sooner but as he choose not state any type, name or make, we must assume he wasn’t going for the kill and credits.
I have it as the Sud Ouest SO-9000 without any mark-up so probably before any mark-ups were being considered.

OK, here's a try, let's see how long this lasts...

Why does one wheel have a cutaway and not the other? And why does the other have what seems to be an 'up' arrow on it, though one can imagine that figuring where 'up' was could be problematic in such a design...
Nonetheless it proved a capable traveller.

No engine instrumentation visible at all, just one maybe two fuel related gauges. (doubtless others out of view but hardly seem comprehensive)

Appreciable effort to provide heating
Very basic IFF
Doesn't even look like a bang-seat!

Alrighty then, I42 presented us with the almighty Convair TF-102 Delta Dagger trainer. 111 built apparently so not such a rarity at its day. Must say that the side-by-side seating was a tough puzzle.

ah, yes, I am sorry. That statement was made with tongue on cheek, I tried to explain myself more PC in the edit comments but now I realize that those comments aren't visible in the mobile view.

I apologise the above and will remove the challenge.
We will wait for I42's confirmation.

interesting posts while I was sleeping! :)

Enthusiasm is dangerous on here!!

Does that mean TAPs are not tolerated? :E

Beamr has it - the TF-102A Delta Dagger.
To train F-102A pilots, the TF-102A trainer was developed, with 111 eventually manufactured. The aircraft was designed with side-by-side seating to facilitate pilot training, a popular concept in the 1950s (also used with the American Cessna T-37, British Hawker Hunter T.7 and English Electric Lightning T.4, among others). This required a redesign of the cockpit and a nose almost as wide as that of a Convair 340 commercial airliner. The new nose introduced buffeting, the source of which was traced to the bulbous canopy. Vortex generators were added to the top of the canopy to prevent the buffet which had started at about Mach 0.72. The intake ducts were revised as the inlets were repositioned. Despite the many changes, the aircraft was combat-capable, although this variant was predictably slower, reaching only subsonic speeds in level flight.

Here's a picture I took of the one on Century Circle at the West Gate of Edwards AFB:

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune.org-vbulletin/1920x1078/tf_102a_edwards_west_gate_f7008d9b1e62805ae351328d3c8c286c5e 8f82f7.jpeg

As I said, it's a cozy cockpit:

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune.org-vbulletin/300x231/tf_102_cockpit_bb3098ecdaca7b72893c98248865a43e6ab4043e.png

The pilot in the left seat in the picture I previously posted is Gordon Cooper, one of the Mercury 7.

Slb was referring to a Netherlands-based USAF TF-102A named Bubbles, with clogs painted on the nose. I found a picture but now have lost the reference!

Does anyone know the origin of the strange bi-furcated stick?

unpressurized twin, not very advanced (only the very essential information is there), though someone tried really hard to make it look exclusive. Looks like Bentley has mated with a Skoda.
Is this a kit or maybe a one-off demonstrator?

Not a kit plane.
Several built
Hardly distinguishable from the other models in the range so I will give you all some slack on that.
Extensive glass fiber used for a reason.
Walnut dashboard probably due to demonstrator version.

When you take time outs like this there is no risk that you get a time out from the higher powers that be!

IAR-93 trainer version?

Beamr
3rd Mar 2022, 04:26
No, not Yugoslavian/Romanian. Had to google that one and quite interestingly, based on internet sources, those IAR-93's had initially Martin Baker 10's as bang seats back in mid-70's. On two seat version they had locally designed rapid exit plan enablers.

I see what you did there! ;)

Beamr
3rd Mar 2022, 15:40
It is time to call the winner!

With a whiplash it is the flogger, to be exact the trainer version of Mig-23, picture being of the rear seat. I tried to emphasize the Shackleton (you know), as that Mikoyan bang seat KM-1 is very distinctive with the diamond stitching. It was installed in Mig21, 23, 25 and 27, so it really narrows down options. The trainer was picked just to cause confusion as the single seat version would've been a bit easy.

To make it short, Noyade was first, over to you!

Noyade
3rd Mar 2022, 20:39
I see what you did there! ;)

Embarrassing. I saw that and dunno why, but disregarded Flogger cause I couldn't see that kink on the starboard side. I was convinced I was seeing an all-wing aircraft with the intakes outta-sight. I had no idea why the horizontal stabiliser was appearing so early in the photo top right.

Thanks Beamr - but I am not worthy and just dropped down the MiG ladder number based on Sycamore's answer and your response.

Handing over to Sycamore.

VTOL test aircraft - first flew in 1957. Bonanza wings and landing gear, T-34 tail, powered by two Vipers, with thrust-deflectors.

Bill Bedford and Hugh Mereweather both flew it prior to the first flight of the P1127.
