Just had another poor experience travelling as a business passenger through Aberdeen. Shambolic. How this airport thinks it is going to cope with any kind of expansion is beyond me. Security staff clueless don't even know their own rules. Aviance as BA's handling agents at the desks an utter joke - some training and a grasp of the English language would be a start followed by a reminder of who the customer is. A miserable experience.

GAW,
At least you don't have far to walk. BA made all their ground staff redundant recently, and I don't think too many went to Aviance.
On The Coast program last week,Aberdeen contributes £10 BILLION to the UK economy PA;and what to we have for an airport? Well you have been there first hand.I try and travel through it as little as possible.Get enough of it at work.

Last night came back from Paris and once again it was a 30 second bus ride around the stand, howls of derision from the passengers.

The check in area is an absolute shambles, disorganised and unclear queues, the concept of online check in and fast bag drop just does not happen

I know there is no easy solution, the airport is just not designed for the amount of traffic it now has and there is nowhere to go for the check in areas, maybe time to get the marquees out

I have heard that "stand zero" has been binned due to cost, which is interesting because the government white paper on possible expansion over the next fifteen (?) years, showed a large cul-de-sac apron to the south of the terminal which included an area of stand zero. I wonder if the whole idea will be forgotten.
As tangoecho says there is word of making a proper stand seventeen and possibly eighteen which will leave virtually no gash parking available on Delta.
I hear there are plans to construct a new small apron between Charlie and Delta taxiways to take three small (J41?) type aircraft. Bussing will obviously be needed.
The Whisky taxiway reconstruction is taking place over ten weekends and could possibly cause problems/delays with the associated backtracks required.
As the apron is full in the morning, I hear that new business will possibly be turned away or forced to use later departure times.
Finally NATS will be providing a radar service at nights, starting later this year.
Most of the above from one source. Any confirmation or further info welcome.

Either the BAA are genuinely unaware of the problems, or are aware & just don't want to know. Think I know which one.

When it comes to PROPER expansion at ABZ, which is what is needed, as opposed to the sticking plasters we have now, BAA only throw buttons at it, & there again they are withdrawing some of the buttons.

Marquee probably has a hole in it now.

Can't someone persuade Ferrovial/BAA to sell ABZ?

I hear Stuarty Milne might be intersted...

ps. my parents came off a PMI flight couple of Fridays ago, said it was a nightmare waiting for their bags.

pps. another taxi company shortly being allowed by BAA to pick-up/drop-off. Pity most of their profits will be paid to BAA for the privilege!

Cameras tampered with ?

So Grampian Police reported to be investigating how 3 security cameras on the approach road to the terminal (Argyll Rd) were damaged & "moved".

They are looking at 26/6, a few days before the terrorist attempt at GLA.

Police keeping an open mind on the matter.

Apparently it was not noticed they had been moved until after the GLA attack as they are not monitored 24/7.

Richard, do you know when the BRU route will be stopping? Will the AMS service keep running?

Many thanks...

Probably another service to Norway starting instead. I think it rains more in Belguim than here, well at least at Au Rouge in Spa it did.
Most of the 9.9% increase in pax was due to operators to the SUN..

WB:

I wish you well down there - Sheffield, Donnie & Hull have been hit hard & all places in between.

Was in Hessle a few years ago, where that chap drowned after trapping his foot in a drain.

Nice place, had a real village feel to it, you wouldn't have known Hull was on its doorstep...if you discounted Clive Sullivan Way thundering underneath!

Stayed in a place that was right next to the Humber Bridge...under its shadow more or less.

Good luck.

Speaking of rain, are there any plans for airbridges in the terminal modernisation. I passed through the airport last October when it was tipping down, and not surprisingly got p!ssed wet through along with everyone else getting off the flight. In my travels I have visited far more obscure cities than Aberdeen (Saskatoon springs to mind), and yet they've had better facilities. What gives?

Next time you pass through you may be able to stay in two new hotel developments being planned by Aberdeen Airport Ltd & partners.

To be built on land to the SW of the airport complex.

The £20m project is to meet a business demand for rooms near the airport.

I've always wanted to sleep near to the Bristow helicopter terminal.

As for significant developments airside...

Completely agree with this. But please have some sympathy for the staff who are there - no training, thrown in at the deep end in the summer holidays. I think that if I had been made redundant and expected to deal with all that I may have a slight attitude problem too!

Thanks Richard for that bit of information. Perhaps once they've been built, I won't have to travel as far before I can get changed into something drier.

Been reading the BAA website and I see they're going to blow a whole £60m on the place over the next ten years. Considering they're going to spend ten times that in the same timescale on Glasgow and Edinburgh, it sounds to me like Aberdeen is on the very end of a poo covered stick.

As for having to deal with grumpy handling agents...get rid of the people and make way for machines! Online/self serve check-in and hand luggage only, it's the way ahead and you get the added bonus of swearing and shouting without the attitude back.

Blot,
That may be so if you are a grey suit on a company days trip, but it doesn't work like that for people with luggage, kids, wife etc.
There is a lot more to the operation than self service check-in,and Trolley chick's post shows what Aviance are like.
In ATC we are having to sort out the Aviance,BA cockup ON THE RUNWAY,which is a serious safety issue. It seems that Aviation is done on the absolute cheap, and at Aberdeen it's the cheapest of the cheapest.Well something WILL go wrong quite soon. You have been warned.

End for Liverpool

Ryanair to stop LPLABZ wef 2/11, a/c to be more favourably redeployed elsewhere.

So from MAN, LPL & BLK serving the NW of England from here, we're down to just MAN now - I think that's how it will stay from now on.
